O God of my fathers, and Lord of mercy, who hast made all things with thy word,

2Wsd 9:22καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ σου κατασκευάσας ἄνθρωπον ἵνα δεσπόζῃ τῶν ὑπὸ σοῦ γενομένων κτισμάτωνWsd 9:2
And ordained man through thy wisdom, that he should have dominion over the creatures which thou hast made,

and by your wisdom you formed man, that he should have dominion over the creatures that were made by you,and by your wisdom you formed man, that he should have dominion over the creatures that were made by you,

3Wsd 9:33καὶ διέπῃ τὸν κόσμον ἐν ὁσιότητι καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ἐν εὐθύτητι ψυχῆς κρίσιν κρίνῃWsd 9:3
And order the world according to equity and righteousness, and execute judgment with an upright heart:

For I thy servant and son of thine handmaid am a feeble person, and of a short time, and too young for the understanding of judgment and laws.

because I am your servant and the son of your handmaid, a weak and short-lived man, with little power to understand judgment and laws.

6Wsd 9:66κἂν γάρ τις ᾖ τέλειος ἐν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων τῆς ἀπὸ σοῦ σοφίας ἀπούσης εἰς οὐδὲν λογισθήσεταιWsd 9:6
For though a man be never so perfect among the children of men, yet if thy wisdom be not with him, he shall be nothing regarded.

For even if a man is perfect among the sons of men, if the wisdom that comes from you is not with him, he will count for nothing.

Thou hast chosen me to be a king of thy people, and a judge of thy sons and daughters:

8Wsd 9:88εἶπας οἰκοδομῆσαι ναὸν ἐν ὄρει ἁγίῳ σου καὶ ἐν πόλει κατασκηνώσεώς σου θυσιαστήριον μίμημα σκηνῆς ἁγίας ἣν προητοίμασας ἀπ’ ἀρχῆςWsd 9:8
Thou hast commanded me to build a temple upon thy holy mount, and an altar in the city wherein thou dwellest, a resemblance of the holy tabernacle, which thou hast prepared from the beginning.

You gave a command to build a sanctuary on your holy mountain, and* an altar in the city where you live, a copy of the holy tent which you prepared from the beginning.

9Wsd 9:99καὶ μετὰ σοῦ ἡ σοφία ἡ εἰδυῖα τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ παροῦσα ὅτε ἐποίεις τὸν κόσμον καὶ ἐπισταμένη τί ἀρεστὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου καὶ τί εὐθὲς ἐν ἐντολαῖς σουWsd 9:9
And wisdom was with thee: which knoweth thy works, and was present when thou madest the world, and knew what was acceptable in thy sight, and right in thy commandments.
Wsd 9:9
Wisdom is with you and knows your works, and was present when you were making the world, and understands what is pleasing in your eyes, and what is right according to your commandments.

10Wsd 9:1010ἐξαπόστειλον αὐτὴν ἐξ ἁγίων οὐρανῶν καὶ ἀπὸ θρόνου δόξης σου πέμψον αὐτήν ἵνα συμπαροῦσά μοι κοπιάσῃ καὶ γνῶ τί εὐάρεστόν ἐστιν παρὰ σοίWsd 9:10
O send her out of thy holy heavens, and from the throne of thy glory, that being present she may labour with me, that I may know what is pleasing unto thee.
Wsd 9:10
Send her from the holy heavens, and ask her to come from the throne of your glory, that being present with me she may work, and I may learn what pleases you well.

11Wsd 9:1111οἶδε γὰρ ἐκείνη πάντα καὶ συνίει καὶ ὁδηγήσει με ἐν ταῖς πράξεσί μου σωφρόνως καὶ φυλάξει με ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτῆςWsd 9:11
For she knoweth and understandeth all things, and she shall lead me soberly in my doings, and preserve me in her power.

For she knows all things and understands, and she will guide me prudently in my actions. She will guard me in her glory.

12Wsd 9:1212καὶ ἔσται προσδεκτὰ τὰ ἔργα μου καὶ διακρινῶ τὸν λαόν σου δικαίως καὶ ἔσομαι ἄξιος θρόνων πατρός μουWsd 9:12
So shall my works be acceptable, and then shall I judge thy people righteously, and be worthy to sit in my father's seat.

So my works will be acceptible. I will judge your people righteously, and I will be worthy of my father’s* throne.

13Wsd 9:1313τίς γὰρ ἄνθρωπος γνώσεται βουλὴν θεοῦ ἢ τίς ἐνθυμηθήσεται τί θέλει ὁ κύριοςWsd 9:13
For what man is he that can know the counsel of God? or who can think what the will of the Lord is?
Wsd 9:13
For what man will know the counsel of God? Or who will conceive what the Lord wills?

14Wsd 9:1414λογισμοὶ γὰρ θνητῶν δειλοί καὶ ἐπισφαλεῖς αἱ ἐπίνοιαι ἡμῶνWsd 9:14
For the thoughts of mortal men are miserable, and our devices are but uncertain.

For the corruptible body presseth down the soul, and the earthy tabernacle weigheth down the mind that museth upon many things.

For a corruptible body weighs down the soul. The earthy tent burdens a mind that is full of cares.

16Wsd 9:1616καὶ μόλις εἰκάζομεν τὰ ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ τὰ ἐν χερσὶν εὑρίσκομεν μετὰ πόνου τὰ δὲ ἐν οὐρανοῖς τίς ἐξιχνίασενWsd 9:16
And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth, and with labour do we find the things that are before us: but the things that are in heaven who hath searched out?

We can hardly guess the things that are on earth, and we find the things that are close at hand with labor; but who has traced out the things that are in the heavens?

17Wsd 9:1717βουλὴν δέ σου τίς ἔγνω εἰ μὴ σὺ ἔδωκας σοφίαν καὶ ἔπεμψας τὸ ἅγιόν σου πνεῦμα ἀπὸ ὑψίστωνWsd 9:17
And thy counsel who hath known, except thou give wisdom, and send thy Holy Spirit from above?
Wsd 9:17
Who gained knowledge of your counsel, unless you gave wisdom, and sent your holy spirit from on high?

18Wsd 9:1818καὶ οὕτως διωρθώθησαν αἱ τρίβοι τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ τὰ ἀρεστά σου ἐδιδάχθησαν ἄνθρωποι καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ ἐσώθησανWsd 9:18
For so the ways of them which lived on the earth were reformed, and men were taught the things that are pleasing unto thee, and were saved through wisdom.
Wsd 9:18
It was thus that the ways of those who are on earth were corrected, and men were taught the things that are pleasing to you. They were saved through wisdom.”
