Strive not with a mighty man' lest thou fall into his hands.

Don’t contend with a mighty man, lest perhaps you fall into his hands.
2Sir 8:22μὴ ἔριζε μετὰ ἀνθρώπου πλουσίου μήποτε ἀντιστήσῃ σου τὴν ὁλκήν πολλοὺς γὰρ ἀπώλεσεν τὸ χρυσίον καὶ καρδίας βασιλέων ἐξέκλινενSir 8:2
Be not at variance with a rich man, lest he overweigh thee: for gold hath destroyed many, and perverted the hearts of kings.
Sir 8:2
Don’t strive with a rich man, lest perhaps he overpower you; for gold has destroyed many, and turned away the hearts of kings.
3Sir 8:33μὴ διαμάχου μετὰ ἀνθρώπου γλωσσώδους καὶ μὴ ἐπιστοιβάσῃς ἐπὶ τὸ πῦρ αὐτοῦ ξύλαSir 8:3
Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.
Sir 8:3
Don’t argue with a loudmouthed man. Don’t heap wood upon his fire.
4Sir 8:44μὴ πρόσπαιζε ἀπαιδεύτῳ ἵνα μὴ ἀτιμάζωνται οἱ πρόγονοί σουSir 8:4
Jest not with a rude man, lest thy ancestors be disgraced.

Don’t make fun of a rude man, lest your ancestors be dishonored.
5Sir 8:55μὴ ὀνείδιζε ἄνθρωπον ἀποστρέφοντα ἀπὸ ἁμαρτίας μνήσθητι ὅτι πάντες ἐσμὲν ἐν ἐπιτίμοιςSir 8:5
Reproach not a man that turneth from sin, but remember that we are all worthy of punishment.

6Sir 8:66μὴ ἀτιμάσῃς ἄνθρωπον ἐν γήρᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ γὰρ ἐξ ἡμῶν γηράσκουσινSir 8:6
Dishonour not a man in his old age: for even some of us wax old.

Don’t dishonor a man in his old age, for some of us are also growing old.
7Sir 8:77μὴ ἐπίχαιρε ἐπὶ νεκρῷ μνήσθητι ὅτι πάντες τελευτῶμενSir 8:7
Rejoice not over thy greatest enemy being dead, but remember that we die all.

8Sir 8:88μὴ παρίδῃς διήγημα σοφῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς παροιμίαις αὐτῶν ἀναστρέφου ὅτι παρ’ αὐτῶν μαθήσῃ παιδείαν καὶ λειτουργῆσαι μεγιστᾶσινSir 8:8
Despise not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint thyself with their proverbs: for of them thou shalt learn instruction, and how to serve great men with ease.

Don’t neglect the discourse of the wise. Be conversant with their proverbs; for from them you will learn discipline and how to serve great men.
9Sir 8:99μὴ ἀστόχει διηγήματος γερόντων καὶ γὰρ αὐτοὶ ἔμαθον παρὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν ὅτι παρ’ αὐτῶν μαθήσῃ σύνεσιν καὶ ἐν καιρῷ χρείας δοῦναι ἀπόκρισινSir 8:9
Miss not the discourse of the elders: for they also learned of their fathers, and of them thou shalt learn understanding, and to give answer as need requireth.
Sir 8:9
Don’t miss the discourse of the aged, for they also learned from their parents, because from them you will learn understanding, and to give an answer in time of need.
10Sir 8:1010μὴ ἔκκαιε ἄνθρακας ἁμαρτωλοῦ μὴ ἐμπυρισθῇς ἐν πυρὶ φλογὸς αὐτοῦSir 8:10
Kindle not the coals of a sinner, lest thou be burnt with the flame of his fire.

11Sir 8:1111μὴ ἐξαναστῇς ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑβριστοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐγκαθίσῃ ὡς ἔνεδρον τῷ στόματί σουSir 8:11
Rise not up in anger at the presence of an injurious person, lest he lie in wait to entrap thee in thy words

12Sir 8:1212μὴ δανείσῃς ἀνθρώπῳ ἰσχυροτέρῳ σου καὶ ἐὰν δανείσῃς ὡς ἀπολωλεκὼς γίνουSir 8:12
Lend not unto him that is mightier than thyself; for if thou lendest him, count it but lost.
Sir 8:12
Don’t lend to a man who is stronger than you; and if you lend, count it as a loss.
13Sir 8:1313μὴ ἐγγυήσῃ ὑπὲρ δύναμίν σου καὶ ἐὰν ἐγγυήσῃ ὡς ἀποτείσων φρόντιζεSir 8:13
Be not surety above thy power: for if thou be surety, take care to pay it.

Don’t be surety beyond your means. If you give surety, think as one who will have to pay.
14Sir 8:1414μὴ δικάζου μετὰ κριτοῦ κατὰ γὰρ τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ κρινοῦσιν αὐτῷSir 8:14
Go not to law with a judge; for they will judge for him according to his honour.

15Sir 8:1515μετὰ τολμηροῦ μὴ πορεύου ἐν ὁδῷ ἵνα μὴ βαρύνηται κατὰ σοῦ αὐτὸς γὰρ κατὰ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιήσει καὶ τῇ ἀφροσύνῃ αὐτοῦ συναπολῇSir 8:15
Travel not by the way with a bold fellow, lest he become grievous unto thee: for he will do according to his own will, and thou shalt perish with him through his folly.
Sir 8:15
Don’t travel with a reckless man, lest he be burdensome to you; for he will do as he pleases, and you will perish with his folly.
16Sir 8:1616μετὰ θυμώδους μὴ ποιήσῃς μάχην καὶ μὴ διαπορεύου μετ’ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἔρημον ὅτι ὡς οὐδὲν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ αἷμα καὶ ὅπου οὐκ ἔστιν βοήθεια καταβαλεῖ σεSir 8:16
Strive not with an angry man, and go not with him into a solitary place: for blood is as nothing in his sight, and where there is no help, he will overthrow thee.
Sir 8:16
Don’t fight with a wrathful man. Don’t travel with him through the desert, for blood is as nothing in his sight. Where there is no help, he will overthrow you.
17Sir 8:1717μετὰ μωροῦ μὴ συμβουλεύου οὐ γὰρ δυνήσεται λόγον στέξαιSir 8:17
Consult not with a fool; for he cannot keep counsel.

18Sir 8:1818ἐνώπιον ἀλλοτρίου μὴ ποιήσῃς κρυπτόν οὐ γὰρ γινώσκεις τί τέξεταιSir 8:18
Do no secret thing before a stranger; for thou knowest not what he will bring forth.

19Sir 8:1919παντὶ ἀνθρώπῳ μὴ ἔκφαινε σὴν καρδίαν καὶ μὴ ἀναφερέτω σοι χάρινSir 8:19
Open not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.
Sir 8:19
