Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars.
Prv 9:1
Wisdom has built her house.
She has carved out her seven pillars.
Prv 9:1Prv 9:1חָ֭כְמוֹת בָּנְתָ֣ה בֵיתָ֑הּ חָצְבָ֖ה עַמּוּדֶ֣יהָ שִׁבְעָֽה׃Prv 9:1
Wisdom has built her house.
She has carved out her seven pillars.
2Prv 9:22ἔσφαξεν τὰ ἑαυτῆς θύματα ἐκέρασεν εἰς κρατῆρα τὸν ἑαυτῆς οἶνον καὶ ἡτοιμάσατο τὴν ἑαυτῆς τράπεζανPrv 9:2
She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table.
Prv 9:2
She has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has also set her table.
Prv 9:2Prv 9:2טָבְחָ֣ה טִ֭בְחָהּ מָסְכָ֣ה יֵינָ֑הּ אַ֝֗ף עָֽרְכָ֥ה שֻׁלְחָנָֽהּ׃Prv 9:2
She has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has also set her table.
3Prv 9:33ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς ἑαυτῆς δούλους συγκαλούσα μετὰ ὑψηλοῦ κηρύγματος ἐπὶ κρατῆρα λέγουσαPrv 9:3
She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying,

She has sent out her maidens.

Prv 9:3Prv 9:3שָֽׁלְחָ֣ה נַעֲרֹתֶ֣יהָ תִקְרָ֑א עַל־גַּ֝פֵּ֗י מְרֹ֣מֵי קָֽרֶת׃Prv 9:3
She has sent out her maidens.
She cries from the highest places of the city:
4Prv 9:44ὅς ἐστιν ἄφρων ἐκκλινάτω πρός με καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρενῶν εἶπενPrv 9:4
Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that want understanding she says,
Prv 9:4
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
Prv 9:4Prv 9:4מִי־פֶ֭תִי יָסֻ֣ר הֵ֑נָּה חֲסַר־לֵ֝֗ב אָ֣מְרָה לּֽוֹ׃Prv 9:4
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
5Prv 9:55ἔλθατε φάγετε τῶν ἐμῶν ἄρτων καὶ πίετε οἶνον ὃν ἐκέρασα ὑμῖνPrv 9:5
Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.

“Come, eat some of my bread,
Drink some of the wine which I have mixed!
Prv 9:5Prv 9:5לְ֭כוּ לַחֲמ֣וּ בְֽלַחֲמִ֑י וּ֝שְׁת֗וּ בְּיַ֣יִן מָסָֽכְתִּי׃Prv 9:5
“Come, eat some of my bread,
Drink some of the wine which I have mixed!
6Prv 9:66ἀπολείπετε ἀφροσύνην καὶ ζήσεσθε καὶ ζητήσατε φρόνησιν ἵνα βιώσητε καὶ κατορθώσατε ἐν γνώσει σύνεσινPrv 9:6
Leave folly, that ye may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge.
Prv 9:6
Leave your simple ways, and live.
Walk in the way of understanding.”
Prv 9:6Prv 9:6עִזְב֣וּ פְתָאיִ֣ם וִֽחְי֑וּ וְ֝אִשְׁר֗וּ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ בִּינָֽה׃Prv 9:6
Leave your simple ways, and live.
Walk in the way of understanding.”
7Prv 9:77ὁ παιδεύων κακοὺς λήμψεται ἑαυτῷ ἀτιμίαν ἐλέγχων δὲ τὸν ἀσεβῆ μωμήσεται ἑαυτόνPrv 9:7
He that reproves evil men shall get dishonour to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly man shall disgrace himself.
Prv 9:7
He who corrects a mocker invites insult.
He who reproves a wicked man invites abuse.
Prv 9:7Prv 9:7יֹ֤סֵ֨ר ׀ לֵ֗ץ לֹקֵ֣חַֽ ל֣וֹ קָל֑וֹן וּמוֹכִ֖יחַ לְרָשָׁ֣ע מוּמֽוֹ׃Prv 9:7
He who corrects a mocker invites insult.
He who reproves a wicked man invites abuse.
8Prv 9:88μὴ ἔλεγχε κακούς ἵνα μὴ μισῶσίν σε ἔλεγχε σοφόν καὶ ἀγαπήσει σεPrv 9:8
Rebuke not evil men, lest they should hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

Don’t reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you.
Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
Prv 9:8Prv 9:8אַל־תּ֣וֹכַח לֵ֭ץ פֶּן־יִשְׂנָאֶ֑ךָּ הוֹכַ֥ח לְ֝חָכָ֗ם וְיֶאֱהָבֶֽךָּ׃Prv 9:8

Give an opportunity to a wise man, and he will be wiser: instruct a just man, and he will receive more instruction.
Prv 9:9
Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser.
Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser.
Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
10Prv 9:1010ἀρχὴ σοφίας φόβος κυρίου καὶ βουλὴ ἁγίων σύνεσιςPrv 9:10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the counsel of saints is understanding: for to know the law is the character of a sound mind.

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom.
The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

For in this way thou shalt live long, and years of thy life shall be added to thee.
Prv 9:11
For by me your days will be multiplied.
The years of your life will be increased.

Son, if thou be wise for thyself, thou shalt also be wise for thy neighbours; and if thou shouldest prove wicked, thou alone wilt bear the evil. He that stays himself upon falsehoods, attempts to rule the winds, and the same will pursue birds in their fight: for he has forsaken the ways of his own vineyard, and he has caused the axles of his own husbandry to go astray; and he goes through a dry desert, and a land appointed to drought, and he gathers barrenness with his hands.
Prv 9:12
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself.
If you mock, you alone will bear it.

A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to want a morsel.
Prv 9:13
The foolish woman is loud,
Undisciplined, and knows nothing.

She sits at the door of her house,
on a seat in the high places of the city,
15Prv 9:1515προσκαλουμένη τοὺς παριόντας καὶ κατευθύνοντας ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶνPrv 9:15
calling to passers by, and to those that are going right on their ways;

who go straight on their ways,

16Prv 9:1616ὅς ἐστιν ὑμῶν ἀφρονέστατος ἐκκλινάτω πρός με ἐνδεέσι δὲ φρονήσεως παρακελεύομαι λέγουσαPrv 9:16
saying, Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that want prudence, saying,
Prv 9:16
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.”
as for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
Prv 9:16Prv 9:16מִי־פֶ֭תִי יָסֻ֣ר הֵ֑נָּה וַחֲסַר־לֵ֝֗ב וְאָ֣מְרָה לּֽוֹ׃Prv 9:16
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.”

17Prv 9:1717ἄρτων κρυφίων ἡδέως ἅψασθε καὶ ὕδατος κλοπῆς γλυκεροῦPrv 9:17
Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft.
Prv 9:17
“Stolen water is sweet.
Food eaten in secret is pleasant.”

18Prv 9:1818ὁ δὲ οὐκ οἶδεν ὅτι γηγενεῖς παρ’ αὐτῇ ὄλλυνται καὶ ἐπὶ πέτευρον ᾅδου συναντᾷPrv 9:18
But he knows that mighty men die by her, and he falls in with a snare of hell. But hasten away, delay not in the place, neither fix thine eye upon her: for thus shalt thou go through strange water; but do thou abstain from strange water, and drink not of a strange fountain, that thou mayest live long, and years of life may be added to thee.
Prv 9:18
But he doesn’t know that the dead are there,
that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
