And the Lord God answered Job, and said,

¶Moreover Yahweh answered Job,
Jb 40:1Jb 40:1וַיַּ֖עַן יְהוָ֥ה אֶת־אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃Jb 40:1
¶Moreover Yahweh answered Job,
2Jb 40:22μὴ κρίσιν μετὰ ἱκανοῦ ἐκκλινεῖ ἐλέγχων θεὸν ἀποκριθήσεται αὐτήνJb 39:32
Will any one pervert judgment with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer.
Jb 40:2
“Shall he who argues contend with the Almighty?
He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
Jb 40:2Jb 40:2הֲ֭רֹב עִם־שַׁדַּ֣י יִסּ֑וֹר מוֹכִ֖יחַ אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַעֲנֶֽנָּה׃ פ Jb 40:2
“Shall he who argues contend with the Almighty?
He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
3Jb 40:33ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει τῷ κυρίῳJb 39:33
And Job answered and said to the Lord,

¶Then Job answered Yahweh,
Jb 40:3Jb 40:3וַיַּ֖עַן אִיּ֥וֹב אֶת־יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּאמַֽר׃Jb 40:3
¶Then Job answered Yahweh,
4Jb 40:44τί ἔτι ἐγὼ κρίνομαι νουθετούμενος καὶ ἐλέγχων κύριον ἀκούων τοιαῦτα οὐθὲν ὤν ἐγὼ δὲ τίνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶ πρὸς ταῦτα χεῖρα θήσω ἐπὶ στόματί μουJb 39:34
Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these arguments? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
Jb 40:4
“Behold, I am of small account. What shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
Jb 40:4Jb 40:4הֵ֣ן קַ֭לֹּתִי מָ֣ה אֲשִׁיבֶ֑ךָּ יָ֝דִ֗י שַׂ֣מְתִּי לְמוֹ־פִֽי׃Jb 40:4
“Behold, I am of small account. What shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
5Jb 40:55ἅπαξ λελάληκα ἐπὶ δὲ τῷ δευτέρῳ οὐ προσθήσωJb 39:35
I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time.
Jb 40:5
I have spoken once, and I will not answer;
Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
Jb 40:5Jb 40:5אַחַ֣ת דִּ֭בַּרְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה וּ֝שְׁתַּ֗יִם וְלֹ֣א אוֹסִֽיף׃ פ Jb 40:5
I have spoken once, and I will not answer;
Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
6Jb 40:66ἔτι δὲ ὑπολαβὼν ὁ κύριος εἶπεν τῷ Ιωβ ἐκ τοῦ νέφουςJb 40:1
And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, saying,

¶Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,
Jb 40:6Jb 40:6וַיַּֽעַן־יְהוָ֣ה אֶת־אִ֭יּוֹב ‏{ מן סערה מִ֥ן ׀ סְעָרָ֗ה }‏ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

Jb 40:6
¶Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,
7Jb 40:77μή ἀλλὰ ζῶσαι ὥσπερ ἀνὴρ τὴν ὀσφύν σου ἐρωτήσω δέ σε σὺ δέ μοι ἀποκρίθητιJb 40:2
Nay, gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me.
Jb 40:7
“Now brace yourself like a man.
I will question you, and you will answer me.
Jb 40:7Jb 40:7אֱזָר־נָ֣א כְגֶ֣בֶר חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ אֶ֝שְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃Jb 40:7
“Now brace yourself like a man.
I will question you, and you will answer me.
8Jb 40:88μὴ ἀποποιοῦ μου τὸ κρίμα οἴει δέ με ἄλλως σοι κεχρηματικέναι ἢ ἵνα ἀναφανῇς δίκαιοςJb 40:3
Do not set aside my judgment: and dost thou think that I have dealt with thee in any other way, than that thou mightest appear to be righteous?
Jb 40:8
Will you even annul my judgment?
Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?
Jb 40:8Jb 40:8הַ֭אַף תָּפֵ֣ר מִשְׁפָּטִ֑י תַּ֝רְשִׁיעֵ֗נִי לְמַ֣עַן תִּצְדָּֽק׃Jb 40:8

9Jb 40:99ἦ βραχίων σοί ἐστιν κατὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἢ φωνῇ κατ’ αὐτὸν βροντᾷςJb 40:4
Hast thou an arm like the Lord's? or dost thou thunder with a voice like his?
Jb 40:9
Or do you have an arm like God?
Can you thunder with a voice like him?
Jb 40:9Jb 40:9וְאִם־זְר֖וֹעַ כָּאֵ֥ל ׀ לָ֑ךְ וּ֝בְק֗וֹל כָּמֹ֥הוּ תַרְעֵֽם׃Jb 40:9
Or do you have an arm like God?
Can you thunder with a voice like him?
10Jb 40:1010ἀνάλαβε δὴ ὕψος καὶ δύναμιν δόξαν δὲ καὶ τιμὴν ἀμφίεσαιJb 40:5
Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe thyself with glory and honour.

“Now deck yourself with excellency and dignity.
Array yourself with honor and majesty.
Jb 40:10Jb 40:10עֲדֵ֥ה נָ֣א גָֽא֣וֹן וָגֹ֑בַהּ וְה֖וֹד וְהָדָ֣ר תִּלְבָּֽשׁ׃Jb 40:10
“Now deck yourself with excellency and dignity.
Array yourself with honor and majesty.
11Jb 40:1111ἀπόστειλον δὲ ἀγγέλους ὀργῇ πᾶν δὲ ὑβριστὴν ταπείνωσονJb 40:6
And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one.
Jb 40:11
Pour out the fury of your anger.
Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him low.
Jb 40:11Jb 40:11הָ֭פֵץ עֶבְר֣וֹת אַפֶּ֑ךָ וּרְאֵ֥ה כָל־גֵּ֝אֶ֗ה וְהַשְׁפִּילֵֽהוּ׃Jb 40:11
Pour out the fury of your anger.
Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him low.
12Jb 40:1212ὑπερήφανον δὲ σβέσον σῆψον δὲ ἀσεβεῖς παραχρῆμαJb 40:7
Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly.
Jb 40:12
Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him.
Crush the wicked in their place.
Jb 40:12Jb 40:12רְאֵ֣ה כָל־גֵּ֭אֶה הַכְנִיעֵ֑הוּ וַהֲדֹ֖ךְ רְשָׁעִ֣ים תַּחְתָּֽם׃Jb 40:12
Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him.
Crush the wicked in their place.
13Jb 40:1313κρύψον δὲ εἰς γῆν ἔξω ὁμοθυμαδόν τὰ δὲ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν ἀτιμίας ἔμπλησονJb 40:8
And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame.
Jb 40:13
Hide them in the dust together.
Bind their faces in the hidden place.
Jb 40:13Jb 40:13טָמְנֵ֣ם בֶּעָפָ֣ר יָ֑חַד פְּ֝נֵיהֶ֗ם חֲבֹ֣שׁ בַּטָּמֽוּן׃Jb 40:13
Hide them in the dust together.
Bind their faces in the hidden place.
14Jb 40:1414ὁμολογήσω ἄρα ὅτι δύναται ἡ δεξιά σου σῶσαιJb 40:9
Then will I confess that thy right hand can save thee.

Then I will also admit to you
that your own right hand can save you.
Jb 40:14Jb 40:14וְגַם־אֲנִ֥י אוֹדֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־תוֹשִׁ֖עַ לְךָ֣ יְמִינֶֽךָ׃Jb 40:14
Then I will also admit to you
that your own right hand can save you.
15Jb 40:1515ἀλλὰ δὴ ἰδοὺ θηρία παρὰ σοί χόρτον ἴσα βουσὶν ἐσθίειJb 40:10
But now look at the wild beasts with thee; they eat grass like oxen.

“See now, behemoth, which I made as well as you.
He eats grass as an ox.
Jb 40:15Jb 40:15הִנֵּה־נָ֣א בְ֭הֵמוֹת אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֣יתִי עִמָּ֑ךְ חָ֝צִ֗יר כַּבָּקָ֥ר יֹאכֵֽל׃Jb 40:15
“See now, behemoth, which I made as well as you.
He eats grass as an ox.
16Jb 40:1616ἰδοὺ δὴ ἰσχὺς αὐτοῦ ἐπ’ ὀσφύι ἡ δὲ δύναμις ἐπ’ ὀμφαλοῦ γαστρόςJb 40:11
Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
Jb 40:16
Look now, his strength is in his thighs.
His force is in the muscles of his belly.
Jb 40:16Jb 40:16הִנֵּה־נָ֣א כֹח֣וֹ בְמָתְנָ֑יו וְ֝אֹנ֗וֹ בִּשְׁרִירֵ֥י בִטְנֽוֹ׃Jb 40:16
Look now, his strength is in his thighs.

17Jb 40:1717ἔστησεν οὐρὰν ὡς κυπάρισσον τὰ δὲ νεῦρα αὐτοῦ συμπέπλεκταιJb 40:12
He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together.

He moves his tail like a cedar.
The sinews of his thighs are knit together.

Jb 40:17
He moves his tail like a cedar.
The sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18Jb 40:1818αἱ πλευραὶ αὐτοῦ πλευραὶ χάλκειαι ἡ δὲ ῥάχις αὐτοῦ σίδηρος χυτόςJb 40:13
His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is as cast iron.
Jb 40:18
His bones are like tubes of brass.
His limbs are like bars of iron.
Jb 40:18Jb 40:18עֲ֭צָמָיו אֲפִיקֵ֣י נְחוּשָׁ֑ה גְּ֝רָמָ֗יו כִּמְטִ֥יל בַּרְזֶֽל׃Jb 40:18
His bones are like tubes of brass.
His limbs are like bars of iron.
19Jb 40:1919τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἀρχὴ πλάσματος κυρίου πεποιημένον ἐγκαταπαίζεσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦJb 40:14
This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels.
Jb 40:19
He is the chief of the ways of God.
He who made him gives him his sword.
Jb 40:19Jb 40:19ה֭וּא רֵאשִׁ֣ית דַּרְכֵי־אֵ֑ל הָ֝עֹשׂוֹ יַגֵּ֥שׁ חַרְבּֽוֹ׃Jb 40:19
He is the chief of the ways of God.

20Jb 40:2020ἐπελθὼν δὲ ἐπ’ ὄρος ἀκρότομον ἐποίησεν χαρμονὴν τετράποσιν ἐν τῷ ταρτάρῳJb 40:15
And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep.

Surely the mountains produce food for him,
where all the animals of the field play.
Jb 40:20Jb 40:20כִּֽי־ב֭וּל הָרִ֣ים יִשְׂאוּ־ל֑וֹ וְֽכָל־חַיַּ֥ת הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה יְשַֽׂחֲקוּ־שָֽׁם׃Jb 40:20
Surely the mountains produce food for him,
where all the animals of the field play.
21Jb 40:2121ὑπὸ παντοδαπὰ δένδρα κοιμᾶται παρὰ πάπυρον καὶ κάλαμον καὶ βούτομονJb 40:16
He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush.

He lies under the lotus trees,
in the covert of the reed, and the marsh.
Jb 40:21Jb 40:21תַּֽחַת־צֶאֱלִ֥ים יִשְׁכָּ֑ב בְּסֵ֖תֶר קָנֶ֣ה וּבִצָּֽה׃Jb 40:21
He lies under the lotus trees,
in the covert of the reed, and the marsh.
22Jb 40:2222σκιάζονται δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ δένδρα μεγάλα σὺν ῥαδάμνοις καὶ κλῶνες ἄγνουJb 40:17
And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and so do the bushes of the field.
Jb 40:22
The lotuses cover him with their shade.
The willows of the brook surround him.
Jb 40:22Jb 40:22יְסֻכֻּ֣הוּ צֶאֱלִ֣ים צִֽלֲל֑וֹ יְ֝סֻבּ֗וּהוּ עַרְבֵי־נָֽחַל׃Jb 40:22

23Jb 40:2323ἐὰν γένηται πλήμμυρα οὐ μὴ αἰσθηθῇ πέποιθεν ὅτι προσκρούσει ὁ Ιορδάνης εἰς τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦJb 40:18
If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth.
Jb 40:23
Behold, if a river overflows, he doesn’t tremble.
He is confident, though the Jordan swells even to his mouth.
Jb 40:23Jb 40:23הֵ֤ן יַעֲשֹׁ֣ק נָ֭הָר לֹ֣א יַחְפּ֑וֹז יִבְטַ֓ח ׀ כִּֽי־יָגִ֖יחַ יַרְדֵּ֣ן אֶל־פִּֽיהוּ׃Jb 40:23
Behold, if a river overflows, he doesn’t tremble.

Yet one shall take him in his sight; one shall catch him with a cord, and pierce his nose.

Shall any take him when he is on the watch,
or pierce through his nose with a snare?
Jb 40:24Jb 40:24בְּעֵינָ֥יו יִקָּחֶ֑נּוּ בְּ֝מֽוֹקְשִׁ֗ים יִנְקָב־אָֽף׃Jb 40:24

25Jb 41:125ἄξεις δὲ δράκοντα ἐν ἀγκίστρῳ περιθήσεις δὲ φορβεὰν περὶ ῥῖνα αὐτοῦJb 40:20
But wilt thou catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose?

“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook,
or press down his tongue with a cord?
Jb 40:25Jb 40:25תִּמְשֹׁ֣ךְ לִוְיָתָ֣ן בְּחַכָּ֑ה וּ֝בְחֶ֗בֶל תַּשְׁקִ֥יעַ לְשֹׁנֽוֹ׃Jb 41:1
“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook,
or press down his tongue with a cord?
26Jb 41:226εἰ δήσεις κρίκον ἐν τῷ μυκτῆρι αὐτοῦ ψελίῳ δὲ τρυπήσεις τὸ χεῖλος αὐτοῦJb 40:21
Or wilt thou fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp?
Jb 41:2
Can you put a rope into his nose,
or pierce his jaw through with a hook?
Jb 40:26Jb 40:26הֲתָשִׂ֣ים אַגְמ֣וֹן בְּאַפּ֑וֹ וּ֝בְח֗וֹחַ תִּקּ֥וֹב לֶֽחֱיוֹ׃Jb 41:2

27Jb 41:327λαλήσει δέ σοι δεήσει ἱκετηρίᾳ μαλακῶςJb 40:22
Will he address thee with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant?

Will he make many petitions to you,
or will he speak soft words to you?
Jb 40:27Jb 40:27הֲיַרְבֶּ֣ה אֵ֭לֶיךָ תַּחֲנוּנִ֑ים אִם־יְדַבֵּ֖ר אֵלֶ֣יךָ רַכּֽוֹת׃Jb 41:3
Will he make many petitions to you,
or will he speak soft words to you?
28Jb 41:428θήσεται δὲ διαθήκην μετὰ σοῦ λήμψῃ δὲ αὐτὸν δοῦλον αἰώνιονJb 40:23
And will he make a covenant with thee? and wilt thou take him for a perpetual servant?
Jb 41:4
Will he make a covenant with you,
that you should take him for a servant forever?
Jb 40:28Jb 40:28הֲיִכְרֹ֣ת בְּרִ֣ית עִמָּ֑ךְ תִּ֝קָּחֶ֗נּוּ לְעֶ֣בֶד עוֹלָֽם׃Jb 41:4
Will he make a covenant with you,
that you should take him for a servant forever?
29Jb 41:529παίξῃ δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ὥσπερ ὀρνέῳ ἢ δήσεις αὐτὸν ὥσπερ στρουθίον παιδίῳJb 40:24
And wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child?
Jb 41:5
Will you play with him as with a bird?
Or will you bind him for your girls?
Jb 40:29Jb 40:29הַֽתְשַׂחֶק־בּ֭וֹ כַּצִּפּ֑וֹר וְ֝תִקְשְׁרֶ֗נּוּ לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃Jb 41:5
Will you play with him as with a bird?
Or will you bind him for your girls?
30Jb 41:630ἐνσιτοῦνται δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔθνη μεριτεύονται δὲ αὐτὸν φοινίκων γένηJb 40:25
And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him?
Jb 41:6
Will traders barter for him?
Will they part him among the merchants?
Jb 40:30Jb 40:30יִכְר֣וּ עָ֭לָיו חַבָּרִ֑ים יֶ֝חֱצ֗וּהוּ בֵּ֣ין כְּֽנַעֲנִֽים׃Jb 41:6
Will traders barter for him?
Will they part him among the merchants?
31Jb 41:731πᾶν δὲ πλωτὸν συνελθὸν οὐ μὴ ἐνέγκωσιν βύρσαν μίαν οὐρᾶς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν πλοίοις ἁλιέων κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦJb 40:26
And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither shall they carry his head in fishing-vessels.
Jb 41:7
Can you fill his skin with barbed irons,
or his head with fish spears?
Jb 40:31Jb 40:31הַֽתְמַלֵּ֣א בְשֻׂכּ֣וֹת עוֹר֑וֹ וּבְצִלְצַ֖ל דָּגִ֣ים רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃Jb 41:7
Can you fill his skin with barbed irons,
or his head with fish spears?
32Jb 41:832ἐπιθήσεις δὲ αὐτῷ χεῖρα μνησθεὶς πόλεμον τὸν γινόμενον ἐν σώματι αὐτοῦ καὶ μηκέτι γινέσθωJb 40:27
But thou shalt lay thy hand upon him once, remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more.
Jb 41:8
Lay your hand on him.
Remember the battle, and do so no more.
Jb 40:32Jb 40:32שִׂים־עָלָ֥יו כַּפֶּ֑ךָ זְכֹ֥ר מִ֝לְחָמָ֗ה אַל־תּוֹסַֽף׃Jb 41:8
