¶Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2Jb 4:22μὴ πολλάκις σοι λελάληται ἐν κόπῳ ἰσχὺν δὲ ῥημάτων σου τίς ὑποίσειJb 4:2
Hast thou been often spoken to in distress? but who shall endure the force of thy words?
Jb 4:2
“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved?
But who can withhold himself from speaking?
Jb 4:2Jb 4:2הֲנִסָּ֬ה דָבָ֣ר אֵלֶ֣יךָ תִּלְאֶ֑ה וַעְצֹ֥ר בְּ֝מִלִּ֗ין מִ֣י יוּכָֽל׃Jb 4:2
“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved?

3Jb 4:33εἰ γὰρ σὺ ἐνουθέτησας πολλοὺς καὶ χεῖρας ἀσθενοῦς παρεκάλεσαςJb 4:3
For whereas thou hast instructed many, and hast strengthened the hands of the weak one,

Behold, you have instructed many,
you have strengthened the weak hands.
Jb 4:3Jb 4:3הִ֭נֵּה יִסַּ֣רְתָּ רַבִּ֑ים וְיָדַ֖יִם רָפ֣וֹת תְּחַזֵּֽק׃Jb 4:3
Behold, you have instructed many,
you have strengthened the weak hands.
4Jb 4:44ἀσθενοῦντάς τε ἐξανέστησας ῥήμασιν γόνασίν τε ἀδυνατοῦσιν θάρσος περιέθηκαςJb 4:4
and hast supported the failing with words, and hast imparted courage to feeble knees.
Jb 4:4
Your words have supported him who was falling,
You have made firm the feeble knees.
Jb 4:4Jb 4:4כּ֭וֹשֵׁל יְקִימ֣וּן מִלֶּ֑יךָ וּבִרְכַּ֖יִם כֹּרְע֣וֹת תְּאַמֵּֽץ׃Jb 4:4
Your words have supported him who was falling,
You have made firm the feeble knees.
5Jb 4:55νῦν δὲ ἥκει ἐπὶ σὲ πόνος καὶ ἥψατό σου σὺ δὲ ἐσπούδασαςJb 4:5
Yet now that pain has come upon thee, and touched thee, thou art troubled.
Jb 4:5
But now it is come to you, and you faint.
It touches you, and you are troubled.
Jb 4:5Jb 4:5כִּ֤י עַתָּ֨ה ׀ תָּב֣וֹא אֵלֶ֣יךָ וַתֵּ֑לֶא תִּגַּ֥ע עָ֝דֶ֗יךָ וַתִּבָּהֵֽל׃Jb 4:5
But now it is come to you, and you faint.
It touches you, and you are troubled.
6Jb 4:66πότερον οὐχ ὁ φόβος σού ἐστιν ἐν ἀφροσύνῃ καὶ ἡ ἐλπίς σου καὶ ἡ ἀκακία τῆς ὁδοῦ σουJb 4:6
Is not thy fear founded in folly, thy hope also, and the mischief of thy way?

Isn’t your piety your confidence?
Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
Jb 4:6Jb 4:6הֲלֹ֣א יִ֭רְאָתְךָ כִּסְלָתֶ֑ךָ תִּ֝קְוָתְךָ֗ וְתֹ֣ם דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃Jb 4:6
Isn’t your piety your confidence?
Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
7Jb 4:77μνήσθητι οὖν τίς καθαρὸς ὢν ἀπώλετο ἢ πότε ἀληθινοὶ ὁλόρριζοι ἀπώλοντοJb 4:7
Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?

“Remember, now, whoever perished, being innocent?
Or where were the upright cut off?
Jb 4:7Jb 4:7זְכָר־נָ֗א מִ֤י ה֣וּא נָקִ֣י אָבָ֑ד וְ֝אֵיפֹ֗ה יְשָׁרִ֥ים נִכְחָֽדוּ׃Jb 4:7
“Remember, now, whoever perished, being innocent?
Or where were the upright cut off?
8Jb 4:88καθ’ ὃν τρόπον εἶδον τοὺς ἀροτριῶντας τὰ ἄτοπα οἱ δὲ σπείροντες αὐτὰ ὀδύνας θεριοῦσιν ἑαυτοῖςJb 4:8
Accordingly as I have seen men ploughing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.
Jb 4:8
According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity,
and sow trouble,
reap the same.
Jb 4:8Jb 4:8כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר רָ֭אִיתִי חֹ֣רְשֵׁי אָ֑וֶן וְזֹרְעֵ֖י עָמָ֣ל יִקְצְרֻֽהוּ׃Jb 4:8
According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity,
and sow trouble,
reap the same.
9Jb 4:99ἀπὸ προστάγματος κυρίου ἀπολοῦνται ἀπὸ δὲ πνεύματος ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀφανισθήσονταιJb 4:9
They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath.
Jb 4:9
By the breath of God they perish.
By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
Jb 4:9Jb 4:9מִנִּשְׁמַ֣ת אֱל֣וֹהַ יֹאבֵ֑דוּ וּמֵר֖וּחַ אַפּ֣וֹ יִכְלֽוּ׃Jb 4:9
By the breath of God they perish.
By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
10Jb 4:1010σθένος λέοντος φωνὴ δὲ λεαίνης γαυρίαμα δὲ δρακόντων ἐσβέσθηJb 4:10
The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched.
Jb 4:10
The roaring of the lion,
and the voice of the fierce lion,
the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
Jb 4:10Jb 4:10שַׁאֲגַ֣ת אַ֭רְיֵה וְק֣וֹל שָׁ֑חַל וְשִׁנֵּ֖י כְפִירִ֣ים נִתָּֽעוּ׃Jb 4:10
The roaring of the lion,
and the voice of the fierce lion,
the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11Jb 4:1111μυρμηκολέων ὤλετο παρὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν βοράν σκύμνοι δὲ λεόντων ἔλιπον ἀλλήλουςJb 4:11
The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another.

The old lion perishes for lack of prey.
The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.
Jb 4:11Jb 4:11לַ֭יִשׁ אֹבֵ֣ד מִבְּלִי־טָ֑רֶף וּבְנֵ֥י לָ֝בִ֗יא יִתְפָּרָֽדוּ׃Jb 4:11

12Jb 4:1212εἰ δέ τι ῥῆμα ἀληθινὸν ἐγεγόνει ἐν λόγοις σου οὐθὲν ἄν σοι τούτων κακὸν ἀπήντησεν πότερον οὐ δέξεταί μου τὸ οὖς ἐξαίσια παρ’ αὐτοῦJb 4:12
But if there had been any truth in thy words, none of these evils would have befallen thee. Shall not mine ear receive excellent revelations from him?

“Now a thing was secretly brought to me.
My ear received a whisper of it.

“Now a thing was secretly brought to me.
My ear received a whisper of it.
13Jb 4:1313φόβοι δὲ καὶ ἠχὼ νυκτερινή ἐπιπίπτων φόβος ἐπ’ ἀνθρώπουςJb 4:13
But as when terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,

In thoughts from the visions of the night,
when deep sleep falls on men,
14Jb 4:1414φρίκη δέ μοι συνήντησεν καὶ τρόμος καὶ μεγάλως μου τὰ ὀστᾶ συνέσεισενJb 4:14
horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.

fear came on me, and trembling,
which made all my bones shake.

15Jb 4:1515καὶ πνεῦμα ἐπὶ πρόσωπόν μου ἐπῆλθεν ἔφριξαν δέ μου τρίχες καὶ σάρκεςJb 4:15
And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.

Then a spirit passed before my face.
The hair of my flesh stood up.

16Jb 4:1616ἀνέστην καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνων εἶδον καὶ οὐκ ἦν μορφὴ πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν μου ἀλλ’ ἢ αὔραν καὶ φωνὴν ἤκουονJb 4:16
I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there, was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, saying,

It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance.
A form was before my eyes.
Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,
Jb 4:16Jb 4:16יַעֲמֹ֤ד ׀ וְֽלֹא־אַכִּ֬יר מַרְאֵ֗הוּ תְּ֭מוּנָה לְנֶ֣גֶד עֵינָ֑י דְּמָמָ֖ה וָק֣וֹל אֶשְׁמָֽע׃Jb 4:16
It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance.
A form was before my eyes.
Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,
17Jb 4:1717τί γάρ μὴ καθαρὸς ἔσται βροτὸς ἐναντίον κυρίου ἢ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ ἄμεμπτος ἀνήρJb 4:17
What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works?
Jb 4:17
‘Shall mortal man be more just than God?
Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
Jb 4:17Jb 4:17הַֽ֭אֱנוֹשׁ מֵאֱל֣וֹהַ יִצְדָּ֑ק אִ֥ם מֵ֝עֹשֵׂ֗הוּ יִטְהַר־גָּֽבֶר׃Jb 4:17
‘Shall mortal man be more just than God?
Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
18Jb 4:1818εἰ κατὰ παίδων αὐτοῦ οὐ πιστεύει κατὰ δὲ ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ σκολιόν τι ἐπενόησενJb 4:18
Whereas he trust not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels.
Jb 4:18
Behold, he puts no trust in his servants.
He charges his angels with error.
Jb 4:18Jb 4:18הֵ֣ן בַּ֭עֲבָדָיו לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וּ֝בְמַלְאָכָ֗יו יָשִׂ֥ים תָּהֳלָֽה׃Jb 4:18
Behold, he puts no trust in his servants.
He charges his angels with error.
19Jb 4:1919τοὺς δὲ κατοικοῦντας οἰκίας πηλίνας ἐξ ὧν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ πηλοῦ ἐσμεν ἔπαισεν αὐτοὺς σητὸς τρόπονJb 4:19
But as for them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth.
Jb 4:19
How much more, those who dwell in houses of clay,
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed before the moth!
Jb 4:19Jb 4:19אַ֤ף ׀ שֹׁכְנֵ֬י בָֽתֵּי־חֹ֗מֶר אֲשֶׁר־בֶּעָפָ֥ר יְסוֹדָ֑ם יְ֝דַכְּא֗וּם לִפְנֵי־עָֽשׁ׃Jb 4:19
How much more, those who dwell in houses of clay,
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed before the moth!
20Jb 4:2020καὶ ἀπὸ πρωίθεν ἕως ἑσπέρας οὐκέτι εἰσίν παρὰ τὸ μὴ δύνασθαι αὐτοὺς ἑαυτοῖς βοηθῆσαι ἀπώλοντοJb 4:20
And from the morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they cannot help themselves.
Jb 4:20
Between morning and evening they are destroyed.
They perish forever without any regarding it.
Jb 4:20Jb 4:20מִבֹּ֣קֶר לָעֶ֣רֶב יֻכַּ֑תּוּ מִבְּלִ֥י מֵ֝שִׂ֗ים לָנֶ֥צַח יֹאבֵֽדוּ׃Jb 4:20
Between morning and evening they are destroyed.
They perish forever without any regarding it.
21Jb 4:2121ἐνεφύσησεν γὰρ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐξηράνθησαν ἀπώλοντο παρὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν αὐτοὺς σοφίανJb 4:21
For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.

Isn’t their tent cord plucked up within them?
They die, and that without wisdom.’
