Howbeit hear, Job, my words, and hearken to my speech.

“However, Job, please hear my speech,
and listen to all my words.
Jb 33:1Jb 33:1וְֽאוּלָ֗ם שְׁמַֽע־נָ֣א אִיּ֣וֹב מִלָּ֑י וְֽכָל־דְּבָרַ֥י הַאֲזִֽינָה׃Jb 33:1
“However, Job, please hear my speech,
and listen to all my words.
2Jb 33:22ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἤνοιξα τὸ στόμα μου καὶ ἐλάλησεν ἡ γλῶσσά μουJb 33:2
For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken.

See now, I have opened my mouth.
My tongue has spoken in my mouth.

See now, I have opened my mouth.
My tongue has spoken in my mouth.
3Jb 33:33καθαρά μου ἡ καρδία ῥήμασιν σύνεσις δὲ χειλέων μου καθαρὰ νοήσειJb 33:3
My heart shall be found pure by my words; and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity.

My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart.
That which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart.

4Jb 33:44πνεῦμα θεῖον τὸ ποιῆσάν με πνοὴ δὲ παντοκράτορος ἡ διδάσκουσά μεJb 33:4
The Divine Spirit is that which formed me, and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me.

The Spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Jb 33:4Jb 33:4רֽוּחַ־אֵ֥ל עָשָׂ֑תְנִי וְנִשְׁמַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י תְּחַיֵּֽנִי׃Jb 33:4
The Spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5Jb 33:55ἐὰν δύνῃ δός μοι ἀπόκρισιν πρὸς ταῦτα ὑπόμεινον στῆθι κατ’ ἐμὲ καὶ ἐγὼ κατὰ σέJb 33:5
If thou canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I will stand against thee.

If you can, answer me.
Set your words in order before me, and stand forth.

If you can, answer me.

6Jb 33:66ἐκ πηλοῦ διήρτισαι σὺ ὡς καὶ ἐγώ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ διηρτίσμεθαJb 33:6
Thou art formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same substance.

Behold, I am toward God even as you are.
I am also formed out of the clay.

Behold, I am toward God even as you are.
I am also formed out of the clay.
7Jb 33:77οὐχ ὁ φόβος μού σε στροβήσει οὐδὲ ἡ χείρ μου βαρεῖα ἔσται ἐπὶ σοίJb 33:7
My fear shall not terrify thee, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid,
neither shall my pressure be heavy on you.
Jb 33:7Jb 33:7הִנֵּ֣ה אֵ֭מָתִי לֹ֣א תְבַעֲתֶ֑ךָּ וְ֝אַכְפִּ֗י עָלֶ֥יךָ לֹא־יִכְבָּֽד׃Jb 33:7
Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid,
neither shall my pressure be heavy on you.
8Jb 33:88πλὴν εἶπας ἐν ὠσίν μου φωνὴν ῥημάτων σου ἀκήκοαJb 33:8
But thou hast said in mine ears, (I have heard the voice of thy words;)because thou sayest, I am pure, not having sinned;

“Surely you have spoken in my hearing,
I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
Jb 33:8Jb 33:8אַ֭ךְ אָמַ֣רְתָּ בְאָזְנָ֑י וְק֖וֹל מִלִּ֣ין אֶשְׁמָֽע׃Jb 33:8
“Surely you have spoken in my hearing,
I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
9Jb 33:99διότι λέγεις καθαρός εἰμι οὐχ ἁμαρτών ἄμεμπτος δέ εἰμι οὐ γὰρ ἠνόμησαJb 33:9
I am blameless, for I have not transgressed.
Jb 33:9
‘I am clean, without disobedience.
I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.
Jb 33:9Jb 33:9זַ֥ךְ אֲנִ֗י בְּֽלִ֫י פָ֥שַׁע חַ֥ף אָנֹכִ֑י וְלֹ֖א עָוֹ֣ן לִֽי׃Jb 33:9
‘I am clean, without disobedience.
I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.
10Jb 33:1010μέμψιν δὲ κατ’ ἐμοῦ εὗρεν ἥγηται δέ με ὥσπερ ὑπεναντίονJb 33:10
Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary.

Behold, he finds occasions against me.
He counts me for his enemy.

12Jb 33:1212πῶς γὰρ λέγεις δίκαιός εἰμι καὶ οὐκ ἐπακήκοέν μου αἰώνιος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐπάνω βροτῶνJb 33:12
For how sayest thou, I am righteous, yet he has not hearkened to me? for he that is above mortals is eternal.

“Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just,
for God is greater than man.
Jb 33:12Jb 33:12הֶן־זֹ֣את לֹא־צָדַ֣קְתָּ אֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־יִרְבֶּ֥ה אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַ מֵאֱנֽוֹשׁ׃Jb 33:12
“Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just,
for God is greater than man.
13Jb 33:1313λέγεις δέ διὰ τί τῆς δίκης μου οὐκ ἐπακήκοεν πᾶν ῥῆμαJb 33:13
But thou sayest, Why has he not heard every word of my cause?

For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time,

yes twice, though man pays no attention.

For God speaks once,

15Jb 33:1515ἢ ἐν μελέτῃ νυκτερινῇ ὡς ὅταν ἐπιπίπτῃ δεινὸς φόβος ἐπ’ ἀνθρώπους ἐπὶ νυσταγμάτων ἐπὶ κοίτηςJb 33:15
sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:)

In a dream, in a vision of the night,

16Jb 33:1616τότε ἀνακαλύπτει νοῦν ἀνθρώπων ἐν εἴδεσιν φόβου τοιούτοις αὐτοὺς ἐξεφόβησενJb 33:16
then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions:

and seals their instruction,

Then he opens the ears of men,

17Jb 33:1717ἀποστρέψαι ἄνθρωπον ἐξ ἀδικίας τὸ δὲ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ πτώματος ἐρρύσατοJb 33:17
to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall.

That he may withdraw man from his purpose,
and hide pride from man.
Jb 33:17Jb 33:17לְ֭הָסִיר אָדָ֣ם מַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וְגֵוָ֖ה מִגֶּ֣בֶר יְכַסֶּֽה׃Jb 33:17
That he may withdraw man from his purpose,

18Jb 33:1818ἐφείσατο δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ θανάτου καὶ μὴ πεσεῖν αὐτὸν ἐν πολέμῳJb 33:18
He spares also his soul from death, and suffers him not to fall in war.

He keeps back his soul from the pit,
and his life from perishing by the sword.

19Jb 33:1919πάλιν δὲ ἤλεγξεν αὐτὸν ἐν μαλακίᾳ ἐπὶ κοίτης καὶ πλῆθος ὀστῶν αὐτοῦ ἐνάρκησενJb 33:19
And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed.

with continual strife in his bones;

Jb 33:19
He is chastened also with pain on his bed,
with continual strife in his bones;
20Jb 33:2020πᾶν δὲ βρωτὸν σίτου οὐ μὴ δύνηται προσδέξασθαι καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ βρῶσιν ἐπιθυμήσειJb 33:20
And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat;
Jb 33:20
So that his life abhors bread,
and his soul dainty food.

His flesh is so consumed away, that it can’t be seen.

22Jb 33:2222ἤγγισεν δὲ εἰς θάνατον ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἡ δὲ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐν ᾅδῃJb 33:22
His soul also draws nigh to death, and his life is in Hades.

and his life to the destroyers.

Yes, his soul draws near to the pit,

23Jb 33:2323ἐὰν ὦσιν χίλιοι ἄγγελοι θανατηφόροι εἷς αὐτῶν οὐ μὴ τρώσῃ αὐτόν ἐὰν νοήσῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐπιστραφῆναι ἐπὶ κύριον ἀναγγείλῃ δὲ ἀνθρώπῳ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ μέμψιν τὴν δὲ ἄνοιαν αὐτοῦ δείξῃJb 33:23
Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and shew his folly;

“If there is beside him an angel,
an interpreter, one among a thousand,
to show to man what is right for him;
Jb 33:23Jb 33:23אִם־יֵ֤שׁ עָלָ֨יו ׀ מַלְאָ֗ךְ מֵלִ֗יץ אֶחָ֥ד מִנִּי־אָ֑לֶף לְהַגִּ֖יד לְאָדָ֣ם יָשְׁרֽוֹ׃Jb 33:23
“If there is beside him an angel,

to show to man what is right for him;
24Jb 33:2424ἀνθέξεται τοῦ μὴ πεσεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς θάνατον ἀνανεώσει δὲ αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ὥσπερ ἀλοιφὴν ἐπὶ τοίχου τὰ δὲ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ ἐμπλήσει μυελοῦJb 33:24
he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as fresh plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with morrow.

then God is gracious to him, and says,
‘Deliver him from going down to the pit,
I have found a ransom.’
Jb 33:24Jb 33:24וַיְחֻנֶּ֗נּוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר פְּ֭דָעֵהוּ מֵרֶ֥דֶת שָׁ֗חַת מָצָ֥אתִי כֹֽפֶר׃Jb 33:24
then God is gracious to him, and says,
‘Deliver him from going down to the pit,
I have found a ransom.’
25Jb 33:2525ἁπαλυνεῖ δὲ αὐτοῦ τὰς σάρκας ὥσπερ νηπίου ἀποκαταστήσει δὲ αὐτὸν ἀνδρωθέντα ἐν ἀνθρώποιςJb 33:25
And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in his full strength.

His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s.
He returns to the days of his youth.
Jb 33:25Jb 33:25רֻֽטֲפַ֣שׁ בְּשָׂר֣וֹ מִנֹּ֑עַר יָ֝שׁ֗וּב לִימֵ֥י עֲלוּמָֽיו׃Jb 33:25

26Jb 33:2626εὐξάμενος δὲ πρὸς κύριον καὶ δεκτὰ αὐτῷ ἔσται εἰσελεύσεται δὲ προσώπῳ καθαρῷ σὺν ἐξηγορίᾳ ἀποδώσει δὲ ἀνθρώποις δικαιοσύνηνJb 33:26
And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression of praise: for he will render to men their due.

He prays to God, and he is favorable to him,
so that he sees his face with joy.
He restores to man his righteousness.
Jb 33:26Jb 33:26יֶעְתַּ֤ר אֶל־אֱל֨וֹהַּ ׀ וַיִּרְצֵ֗הוּ וַיַּ֣רְא פָּ֭נָיו בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה וַיָּ֥שֶׁב לֶ֝אֱנ֗וֹשׁ צִדְקָתֽוֹ׃Jb 33:26
He prays to God, and he is favorable to him,
so that he sees his face with joy.
He restores to man his righteousness.
27Jb 33:2727εἶτα τότε ἀπομέμψεται ἄνθρωπος αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ λέγων οἷα συνετέλουν καὶ οὐκ ἄξια ἤτασέν με ὧν ἥμαρτονJb 33:27
Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins.

He sings before men, and says,
‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right,
and it didn’t profit me.
Jb 33:27Jb 33:27יָשֹׁ֤ר ׀ עַל־אֲנָשִׁ֗ים וַיֹּ֗אמֶר חָ֭טָאתִי וְיָשָׁ֥ר הֶעֱוֵ֗יתִי וְלֹא־שָׁ֥וָה לִֽי׃Jb 33:27
He sings before men, and says,
‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right,
and it didn’t profit me.
28Jb 33:2828σῶσον ψυχήν μου τοῦ μὴ ἐλθεῖν εἰς διαφθοράν καὶ ἡ ζωή μου φῶς ὄψεταιJb 33:28
Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.
Jb 33:28
He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit.
My life shall see the light.’
Jb 33:28Jb 33:28פָּדָ֣ה ‏{ נפשי נַ֭פְשׁוֹ }‏ מֵעֲבֹ֣ר בַּשָּׁ֑חַת ‏{ וחיתי וְ֝חַיָּתוֹ }‏ בָּא֥וֹר תִּרְאֶֽה׃

Jb 33:28
He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit.
My life shall see the light.’
29Jb 33:2929ἰδοὺ πάντα ταῦτα ἐργᾶται ὁ ἰσχυρὸς ὁδοὺς τρεῖς μετὰ ἀνδρόςJb 33:29
Behold, all these things, the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man.

“Behold, God works all these things,
twice, yes three times, with a man,
Jb 33:29Jb 33:29הֶן־כָּל־אֵ֭לֶּה יִפְעַל־אֵ֑ל פַּעֲמַ֖יִם שָׁל֣וֹשׁ עִם־גָּֽבֶר׃Jb 33:29
“Behold, God works all these things,

30Jb 33:3030ἀλλ’ ἐρρύσατο τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ θανάτου ἵνα ἡ ζωή μου ἐν φωτὶ αἰνῇ αὐτόνJb 33:30
And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light.

to bring back his soul from the pit,
that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

Hold your peace, and I will speak.

Mark well, Job, and listen to me.
Hold your peace, and I will speak.
32Jb 33:3232εἰ εἰσὶν λόγοι ἀποκρίθητί μοι λάλησον θέλω γὰρ δικαιωθῆναί σεJb 33:32
If thou hast words, answer me: speak, for I desire thee to be justified.

If you have anything to say, answer me.
Speak, for I desire to justify you.
Jb 33:32Jb 33:32אִם־יֵשׁ־מִלִּ֥ין הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי דַּ֝בֵּ֗ר כִּֽי־חָפַ֥צְתִּי צַדְּקֶֽךָּ׃Jb 33:32
If you have anything to say, answer me.
Speak, for I desire to justify you.
33Jb 33:3333εἰ μή σὺ ἄκουσόν μου κώφευσον καὶ διδάξω σε σοφίανJb 33:33
If not, do thou hear me: be silent, and I will teach thee.

If not, listen to me.
Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.”
