I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.

“I made a covenant with my eyes,
how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?
Jb 31:1Jb 31:1בְּ֭רִית כָּרַ֣תִּי לְעֵינָ֑י וּמָ֥ה אֶ֝תְבּוֹנֵ֗ן עַל־בְּתוּלָֽה׃Jb 31:1
“I made a covenant with my eyes,
how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?
2Jb 31:22καὶ τί ἐμέρισεν ὁ θεὸς ἀπάνωθεν καὶ κληρονομία ἱκανοῦ ἐξ ὑψίστωνJb 31:2
Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance given of the Mighty One from the highest?

For what is the portion from God above,
and the heritage from the Almighty on high?
Jb 31:2Jb 31:2וּמֶ֤ה ׀ חֵ֣לֶק אֱל֣וֹהַּ מִמָּ֑עַל וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת שַׁ֝דַּ֗י מִמְּרֹמִֽים׃Jb 31:2
For what is the portion from God above,
and the heritage from the Almighty on high?
3Jb 31:33οὐχὶ ἀπώλεια τῷ ἀδίκῳ καὶ ἀπαλλοτρίωσις τοῖς ποιοῦσιν ἀνομίανJb 31:3
Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.
Jb 31:3
Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,
and disaster to the workers of iniquity?
Jb 31:3Jb 31:3הֲלֹא־אֵ֥יד לְעַוָּ֑ל וְ֝נֵ֗כֶר לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃Jb 31:3
Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,
and disaster to the workers of iniquity?
4Jb 31:44οὐχὶ αὐτὸς ὄψεται ὁδόν μου καὶ πάντα τὰ διαβήματά μου ἐξαριθμήσεταιJb 31:4
Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?
Jb 31:4
Doesn’t he see my ways,
and number all my steps?
Jb 31:4Jb 31:4הֲלֹא־ה֭וּא יִרְאֶ֣ה דְרָכָ֑י וְֽכָל־צְעָדַ֥י יִסְפּֽוֹר׃Jb 31:4
Doesn’t he see my ways,
and number all my steps?
5Jb 31:55εἰ δὲ ἤμην πεπορευμένος μετὰ γελοιαστῶν εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐσπούδασεν ὁ πούς μου εἰς δόλονJb 31:5
But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:

“If I have walked with falsehood,
and my foot has hurried to deceit
Jb 31:5Jb 31:5אִם־הָלַ֥כְתִּי עִם־שָׁ֑וְא וַתַּ֖חַשׁ עַל־מִרְמָ֣ה רַגְלִֽי׃Jb 31:5
“If I have walked with falsehood,
and my foot has hurried to deceit
6Jb 31:66ἱσταίη με ἄρα ἐν ζυγῷ δικαίῳ οἶδεν δὲ ὁ κύριος τὴν ἀκακίαν μουJb 31:6
(for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:)
Jb 31:6
(let me be weighed in an even balance,
that God may know my integrity);
Jb 31:6Jb 31:6יִשְׁקְלֵ֥נִי בְמֹאזְנֵי־צֶ֑דֶק וְיֵדַ֥ע אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ תֻּמָּתִֽי׃Jb 31:6
(let me be weighed in an even balance,
that God may know my integrity);
7Jb 31:77εἰ ἐξέκλινεν ὁ πούς μου ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ εἰ δὲ καὶ τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ ἐπηκολούθησεν ἡ καρδία μου εἰ δὲ καὶ ταῖς χερσίν μου ἡψάμην δώρωνJb 31:7
if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;

if my step has turned out of the way,
if my heart walked after my eyes,
if any defilement has stuck to my hands,
Jb 31:7Jb 31:7אִ֥ם תִּטֶּ֣ה אַשֻּׁרִי֮ מִנִּ֪י הַ֫דָּ֥רֶךְ וְאַחַ֣ר עֵ֭ינַי הָלַ֣ךְ לִבִּ֑י וּ֝בְכַפַּ֗י דָּ֣בַק מֻאֽוּם׃ פ Jb 31:7
if my step has turned out of the way,
if my heart walked after my eyes,
if any defilement has stuck to my hands,
8Jb 31:88σπείραιμι ἄρα καὶ ἄλλοι φάγοισαν ἄρριζος δὲ γενοίμην ἐπὶ γῆςJb 31:8
then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.
Jb 31:8
then let me sow, and let another eat.
Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.
Jb 31:8Jb 31:8אֶ֭זְרְעָה וְאַחֵ֣ר יֹאכֵ֑ל וְֽצֶאֱצָאַ֥י יְשֹׁרָֽשׁוּ׃Jb 31:8
then let me sow, and let another eat.
Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.
9Jb 31:99εἰ ἐξηκολούθησεν ἡ καρδία μου γυναικὶ ἀνδρὸς ἑτέρου εἰ καὶ ἐγκάθετος ἐγενόμην ἐπὶ θύραις αὐτῆςJb 31:9
If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;
Jb 31:9
“If my heart has been enticed to a woman,
and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,
Jb 31:9Jb 31:9אִם־נִפְתָּ֣ה לִ֭בִּי עַל־אִשָּׁ֑ה וְעַל־פֶּ֖תַח רֵעִ֣י אָרָֽבְתִּי׃Jb 31:9
“If my heart has been enticed to a woman,
and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,
10Jb 31:1010ἀρέσαι ἄρα καὶ ἡ γυνή μου ἑτέρῳ τὰ δὲ νήπιά μου ταπεινωθείηJb 31:10
then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.
Jb 31:10
then let my wife grind for another,
and let others sleep with her.
Jb 31:10Jb 31:10תִּטְחַ֣ן לְאַחֵ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֑י וְ֝עָלֶ֗יהָ יִכְרְע֥וּן אֲחֵרִֽין׃Jb 31:10
then let my wife grind for another,
and let others sleep with her.
11Jb 31:1111θυμὸς γὰρ ὀργῆς ἀκατάσχετος τὸ μιᾶναι ἀνδρὸς γυναῖκαJb 31:11
For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man's wife.
Jb 31:11
For that would be a heinous crime.
Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges:
Jb 31:11Jb 31:11כִּי־‏{ הוא הִ֥יא }‏ זִמָּ֑ה ‏{ והיא וְ֝ה֗וּא }‏ עָוֹ֥ן פְּלִילִֽים׃

Jb 31:11
For that would be a heinous crime.
Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges:
12Jb 31:1212πῦρ γάρ ἐστιν καιόμενον ἐπὶ πάντων τῶν μερῶν οὗ δ’ ἂν ἐπέλθῃ ἐκ ῥιζῶν ἀπώλεσενJb 31:12
For it is a fire burning on every side, and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.
Jb 31:12
For it is a fire that consumes to destruction,
and would root out all my increase.
Jb 31:12Jb 31:12כִּ֤י אֵ֣שׁ הִ֭יא עַד־אֲבַדּ֣וֹן תֹּאכֵ֑ל וּֽבְכָל־תְּב֖וּאָתִ֣י תְשָׁרֵֽשׁ׃Jb 31:12
For it is a fire that consumes to destruction,
and would root out all my increase.
13Jb 31:1313εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐφαύλισα κρίμα θεράποντός μου ἢ θεραπαίνης κρινομένων αὐτῶν πρός μεJb 31:13
And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or my handmaid, when they pleaded with me;
Jb 31:13
“If I have despised the cause of my male servant
or of my female servant,
when they contended with me;
Jb 31:13Jb 31:13אִם־אֶמְאַ֗ס מִשְׁפַּ֣ט עַ֭בְדִּי וַאֲמָתִ֑י בְּ֝רִבָ֗ם עִמָּדִֽי׃Jb 31:13
“If I have despised the cause of my male servant
or of my female servant,
when they contended with me;
14Jb 31:1414τί γὰρ ποιήσω ἐὰν ἔτασίν μου ποιήσηται ὁ κύριος ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἐπισκοπήν τίνα ἀπόκρισιν ποιήσομαιJb 31:14
what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?

What then shall I do when God rises up?
When he visits, what shall I answer him?
Jb 31:14Jb 31:14וּמָ֣ה אֶֽ֭עֱשֶׂה כִּֽי־יָק֣וּם אֵ֑ל וְכִֽי־יִ֝פְקֹ֗ד מָ֣ה אֲשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ׃Jb 31:14
What then shall I do when God rises up?
When he visits, what shall I answer him?
15Jb 31:1515πότερον οὐχ ὡς καὶ ἐγὼ ἐγενόμην ἐν γαστρί καὶ ἐκεῖνοι γεγόνασιν γεγόναμεν δὲ ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ κοιλίᾳJb 31:15
Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb.
Jb 31:15
Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him?
Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?
Jb 31:15Jb 31:15הֲ‍ֽ֝לֹא־בַ֭בֶּטֶן עֹשֵׂ֣נִי עָשָׂ֑הוּ וַ֝יְכֻנֶ֗נּוּ בָּרֶ֥חֶם אֶחָֽד׃Jb 31:15
Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him?
Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?
16Jb 31:1616ἀδύνατοι δὲ χρείαν ἥν ποτ’ εἶχον οὐκ ἀπέτυχον χήρας δὲ τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν οὐκ ἐξέτηξαJb 31:16
But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.

“If I have withheld the poor from their desire,
or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
Jb 31:16Jb 31:16אִם־אֶ֭מְנַע מֵחֵ֣פֶץ דַּלִּ֑ים וְעֵינֵ֖י אַלְמָנָ֣ה אֲכַלֶּֽה׃Jb 31:16
“If I have withheld the poor from their desire,
or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
17Jb 31:1717εἰ δὲ καὶ τὸν ψωμόν μου ἔφαγον μόνος καὶ οὐχὶ ὀρφανῷ μετέδωκαJb 31:17
And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan;
Jb 31:17
or have eaten my morsel alone,
and the fatherless has not eaten of it
Jb 31:17Jb 31:17וְאֹכַ֣ל פִּתִּ֣י לְבַדִּ֑י וְלֹא־אָכַ֖ל יָת֣וֹם מִמֶּֽנָּה׃Jb 31:17
or have eaten my morsel alone,
and the fatherless has not eaten of it
18Jb 31:1818ὅτι ἐκ νεότητός μου ἐξέτρεφον ὡς πατὴρ καὶ ἐκ γαστρὸς μητρός μου ὡδήγησαJb 31:18
(for I nourished them as a father from my youth and guided them from my mother's womb.)
Jb 31:18
(no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
her have I guided from my mother’s womb);
Jb 31:18Jb 31:18כִּ֣י מִ֭נְּעוּרַי גְּדֵלַ֣נִי כְאָ֑ב וּמִבֶּ֖טֶן אִמִּ֣י אַנְחֶֽנָּה׃Jb 31:18
(no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
her have I guided from my mother’s womb);
19Jb 31:1919εἰ δὲ καὶ ὑπερεῖδον γυμνὸν ἀπολλύμενον καὶ οὐκ ἠμφίασαJb 31:19

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing,
or that the needy had no covering;
Jb 31:19Jb 31:19אִם־אֶרְאֶ֣ה א֭וֹבֵד מִבְּלִ֣י לְב֑וּשׁ וְאֵ֥ין כְּ֝ס֗וּת לָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃Jb 31:19
if I have seen any perish for want of clothing,
or that the needy had no covering;
20Jb 31:2020ἀδύνατοι δὲ εἰ μὴ εὐλόγησάν με ἀπὸ δὲ κουρᾶς ἀμνῶν μου ἐθερμάνθησαν οἱ ὦμοι αὐτῶνJb 31:20
and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
Jb 31:20
if his heart hasn’t blessed me,
if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;
Jb 31:20Jb 31:20אִם־לֹ֣א בֵרֲכ֣וּנִי ‏{ חלצו חֲלָצָ֑יו }‏ וּמִגֵּ֥ז כְּ֝בָשַׂי יִתְחַמָּֽם׃

Jb 31:20
if his heart hasn’t blessed me,
if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;
21Jb 31:2121εἰ ἐπῆρα ὀρφανῷ χεῖρα πεποιθὼς ὅτι πολλή μοι βοήθεια περίεστινJb 31:21
if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior to his:
Jb 31:21
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,
because I saw my help in the gate,
Jb 31:21Jb 31:21אִם־הֲנִיפ֣וֹתִי עַל־יָת֣וֹם יָדִ֑י כִּֽי־אֶרְאֶ֥ה בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר עֶזְרָתִֽי׃Jb 31:21
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,
because I saw my help in the gate,
22Jb 31:2222ἀποσταίη ἄρα ὁ ὦμός μου ἀπὸ τῆς κλειδός ὁ δὲ βραχίων μου ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀγκῶνός μου συντριβείηJb 31:22
let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.
Jb 31:22
then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade,
and my arm be broken from the bone.
Jb 31:22Jb 31:22כְּ֭תֵפִי מִשִּׁכְמָ֣ה תִפּ֑וֹל וְ֝אֶזְרֹעִ֗י מִקָּנָ֥ה תִשָּׁבֵֽר׃Jb 31:22
then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade,
and my arm be broken from the bone.
23Jb 31:2323φόβος γὰρ κυρίου συνέσχεν με καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ λήμματος αὐτοῦ οὐχ ὑποίσωJb 31:23
For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden.
Jb 31:23
For calamity from God is a terror to me.
Because his majesty, I can do nothing.
Jb 31:23Jb 31:23כִּ֤י פַ֣חַד אֵ֭לַי אֵ֣יד אֵ֑ל וּ֝מִשְּׂאֵת֗וֹ לֹ֣א אוּכָֽל׃Jb 31:23
For calamity from God is a terror to me.
Because his majesty, I can do nothing.
24Jb 31:2424εἰ ἔταξα χρυσίον ἰσχύν μου εἰ δὲ καὶ λίθῳ πολυτελεῖ ἐπεποίθησαJb 31:24
If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;

“If I have made gold my hope,
and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’
Jb 31:24Jb 31:24אִם־שַׂ֣מְתִּי זָהָ֣ב כִּסְלִ֑י וְ֝לַכֶּ֗תֶם אָמַ֥רְתִּי מִבְטַחִֽי׃Jb 31:24
“If I have made gold my hope,
and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’
25Jb 31:2525εἰ δὲ καὶ εὐφράνθην πολλοῦ πλούτου μοι γενομένου εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπ’ ἀναριθμήτοις ἐθέμην χεῖρά μουJb 31:25
and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable treasures:
Jb 31:25
If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
and because my hand had gotten much;
Jb 31:25Jb 31:25אִם־אֶ֭שְׂמַח כִּי־רַ֣ב חֵילִ֑י וְכִֽי־כַ֝בִּ֗יר מָצְאָ֥ה יָדִֽי׃Jb 31:25
If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
and because my hand had gotten much;
26Jb 31:2626ἦ οὐχ ὁρῶ μὲν ἥλιον τὸν ἐπιφαύσκοντα ἐκλείποντα σελήνην δὲ φθίνουσαν οὐ γὰρ ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς ἐστινJb 31:26
(do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not power to continue:)

if I have seen the sun when it shined,
or the moon moving in splendor,
Jb 31:26Jb 31:26אִם־אֶרְאֶ֣ה א֖וֹר כִּ֣י יָהֵ֑ל וְ֝יָרֵ֗חַ יָקָ֥ר הֹלֵֽךְ׃Jb 31:26
if I have seen the sun when it shined,
or the moon moving in splendor,
27Jb 31:2727καὶ εἰ ἠπατήθη λάθρᾳ ἡ καρδία μου εἰ δὲ καὶ χεῖρά μου ἐπιθεὶς ἐπὶ στόματί μου ἐφίλησαJb 31:27
and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:
Jb 31:27
and my heart has been secretly enticed,
and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,
Jb 31:27Jb 31:27וַיִּ֣פְתְּ בַּסֵּ֣תֶר לִבִּ֑י וַתִּשַּׁ֖ק יָדִ֣י לְפִֽי׃Jb 31:27
and my heart has been secretly enticed,
and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,
28Jb 31:2828καὶ τοῦτό μοι ἄρα ἀνομία ἡ μεγίστη λογισθείη ὅτι ἐψευσάμην ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ ὑψίστουJb 31:28
let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I should have lied against the Lord Most High.
Jb 31:28
this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;
for I should have denied the God who is above.
Jb 31:28Jb 31:28גַּם־ה֭וּא עָוֹ֣ן פְּלִילִ֑י כִּֽי־כִחַ֖שְׁתִּי לָאֵ֣ל מִמָּֽעַל׃Jb 31:28
this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;
for I should have denied the God who is above.
29Jb 31:2929εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπιχαρὴς ἐγενόμην πτώματι ἐχθρῶν μου καὶ εἶπεν ἡ καρδία μου εὖγεJb 31:29
And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!
Jb 31:29
“If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me,
or lifted up myself when evil found him;
Jb 31:29Jb 31:29אִם־אֶ֭שְׂמַח בְּפִ֣יד מְשַׂנְאִ֑י וְ֝הִתְעֹרַ֗רְתִּי כִּֽי־מְצָ֥אוֹ רָֽע׃Jb 31:29
“If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me,
or lifted up myself when evil found him;
30Jb 31:3030ἀκούσαι ἄρα τὸ οὖς μου τὴν κατάραν μου θρυληθείην δὲ ἄρα ὑπὸ λαοῦ μου κακούμενοςJb 31:30
let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.
Jb 31:30
(yes, I have not allowed my mouth to sin
by asking his life with a curse);
Jb 31:30Jb 31:30וְלֹא־נָתַ֣תִּי לַחֲטֹ֣א חִכִּ֑י לִשְׁאֹ֖ל בְּאָלָ֣ה נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃Jb 31:30

by asking his life with a curse);
31Jb 31:3131εἰ δὲ καὶ πολλάκις εἶπον αἱ θεράπαιναί μου τίς ἂν δῴη ἡμῖν τῶν σαρκῶν αὐτοῦ πλησθῆναι λίαν μου χρηστοῦ ὄντοςJb 31:31
And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:

if the men of my tent have not said,
‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’
Jb 31:31Jb 31:31אִם־לֹ֣א אָ֭מְרוּ מְתֵ֣י אָהֳלִ֑י מִֽי־יִתֵּ֥ן מִ֝בְּשָׂר֗וֹ לֹ֣א נִשְׂבָּֽע׃Jb 31:31
if the men of my tent have not said,
‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’
32Jb 31:3232ἔξω δὲ οὐκ ηὐλίζετο ξένος ἡ δὲ θύρα μου παντὶ ἐλθόντι ἀνέῳκτοJb 31:32
for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:)
Jb 31:32
(the foreigner has not lodged in the street,
but I have opened my doors to the traveler);
Jb 31:32Jb 31:32בַּ֭חוּץ לֹא־יָלִ֣ין גֵּ֑ר דְּ֝לָתַ֗י לָאֹ֥רַח אֶפְתָּֽח׃Jb 31:32
(the foreigner has not lodged in the street,
but I have opened my doors to the traveler);
33Jb 31:3333εἰ δὲ καὶ ἁμαρτὼν ἀκουσίως ἔκρυψα τὴν ἁμαρτίαν μουJb 31:33
or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions,
by hiding my iniquity in my heart,
Jb 31:33Jb 31:33אִם־כִּסִּ֣יתִי כְאָדָ֣ם פְּשָׁעָ֑י לִטְמ֖וֹן בְּחֻבִּ֣י עֲוֹֽנִי׃Jb 31:33
if like Adam I have covered my transgressions,
by hiding my iniquity in my heart,
34Jb 31:3434οὐ γὰρ διετράπην πολυοχλίαν πλήθους τοῦ μὴ ἐξαγορεῦσαι ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν εἰ δὲ καὶ εἴασα ἀδύνατον ἐξελθεῖν θύραν μου κόλπῳ κενῷJb 31:34
(for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:

because I feared the great multitude,
and the contempt of families terrified me,
so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—
Jb 31:34Jb 31:34כִּ֤י אֶֽעֱר֨וֹץ ׀ הָ֘מ֤וֹן רַבָּ֗ה וּבוּז־מִשְׁפָּח֥וֹת יְחִתֵּ֑נִי וָ֝אֶדֹּ֗ם לֹא־אֵ֥צֵא פָֽתַח׃Jb 31:34
because I feared the great multitude,
and the contempt of families terrified me,
so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—
35Jb 31:3535τίς δῴη ἀκούοντά μου χεῖρα δὲ κυρίου εἰ μὴ ἐδεδοίκειν συγγραφὴν δέ ἣν εἶχον κατά τινοςJb 31:35
(Oh that I had a hearer,)and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and as to the written charge which I had against any one,
Jb 31:35
oh that I had one to hear me!
(behold, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me);
let the accuser write my indictment!
Jb 31:35Jb 31:35מִ֤י יִתֶּן־לִ֨י ׀ שֹׁ֘מֵ֤עַֽ לִ֗י הֶן־תָּ֭וִי שַׁדַּ֣י יַעֲנֵ֑נִי וְסֵ֥פֶר כָּ֝תַ֗ב אִ֣ישׁ רִיבִֽי׃Jb 31:35
oh that I had one to hear me!
(behold, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me);
let the accuser write my indictment!
36Jb 31:3636ἐπ’ ὤμοις ἂν περιθέμενος στέφανον ἀνεγίνωσκονJb 31:36
I would place it as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.
Jb 31:36
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder;
and I would bind it to me as a crown.
Jb 31:36Jb 31:36אִם־לֹ֣א עַל־שִׁ֭כְמִי אֶשָּׂאֶ֑נּוּ אֶֽעֶנְדֶ֖נּוּ עֲטָר֣וֹת לִֽי׃Jb 31:36
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder;
and I would bind it to me as a crown.
37Jb 31:3737καὶ εἰ μὴ ῥήξας αὐτὴν ἀπέδωκα οὐθὲν λαβὼν παρὰ χρεοφειλέτουJb 31:37
And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:
Jb 31:37
I would declare to him the number of my steps.
as a prince would I go near to him.
Jb 31:37Jb 31:37מִסְפַּ֣ר צְ֭עָדַי אַגִּידֶ֑נּוּ כְּמוֹ־נָ֝גִ֗יד אֲקָרֲבֶֽנּוּ׃Jb 31:37
I would declare to him the number of my steps.

38Jb 31:3838εἰ ἐπ’ ἐμοί ποτε ἡ γῆ ἐστέναξεν εἰ δὲ καὶ οἱ αὔλακες αὐτῆς ἔκλαυσαν ὁμοθυμαδόνJb 31:38
If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;
Jb 31:38
If my land cries out against me,
and its furrows weep together;
Jb 31:38Jb 31:38אִם־עָ֭לַי אַדְמָתִ֣י תִזְעָ֑ק וְ֝יַ֗חַד תְּלָמֶ֥יהָ יִבְכָּיֽוּן׃Jb 31:38
If my land cries out against me,
and its furrows weep together;
39Jb 31:3939εἰ δὲ καὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς ἔφαγον μόνος ἄνευ τιμῆς εἰ δὲ καὶ ψυχὴν κυρίου τῆς γῆς ἐκβαλὼν ἐλύπησαJb 31:39
and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking aught from him:
Jb 31:39
if I have eaten its fruits without money,
or have caused its owners to lose their life,
Jb 31:39Jb 31:39אִם־כֹּ֭חָהּ אָכַ֣לְתִּי בְלִי־כָ֑סֶף וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ בְּעָלֶ֣יהָ הִפָּֽחְתִּי׃Jb 31:39
if I have eaten its fruits without money,
or have caused its owners to lose their life,
40Jb 31:4040ἀντὶ πυροῦ ἄρα ἐξέλθοι μοι κνίδη ἀντὶ δὲ κριθῆς βάτος καὶ ἐπαύσατο Ιωβ ῥήμασινJb 31:40
then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
Jb 31:40
let briars grow instead of wheat,
and stinkweed instead of barley.”
¶The words of Job are ended.
Jb 31:40Jb 31:40תַּ֤חַת חִטָּ֨ה ׀ יֵ֥צֵא ח֗וֹחַ וְתַֽחַת־שְׂעֹרָ֥ה בָאְשָׁ֑ה תַּ֝֗מּוּ דִּבְרֵ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃ פ Jb 31:40
let briars grow instead of wheat,
and stinkweed instead of barley.”
