¶Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2Jb 22:22πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμηνJb 22:2
Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge?
Jb 22:2
“Can a man be profitable to God?
Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.
Jb 22:2Jb 22:2הַלְאֵ֥ל יִסְכָּן־גָּ֑בֶר כִּֽי־יִסְכֹּ֖ן עָלֵ֣ימוֹ מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃Jb 22:2
“Can a man be profitable to God?
Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.
3Jb 22:33τί γὰρ μέλει τῷ κυρίῳ ἐὰν σὺ ἦσθα τοῖς ἔργοις ἄμεμπτος ἢ ὠφέλεια ὅτι ἁπλώσῃς τὴν ὁδόν σουJb 22:3
For what matters it to the Lord, if thou wert blameless in thy works? or is it profitable that thou shouldest perfect thy way?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous?
Or does it benefit him, that you make your ways perfect?
Jb 22:3Jb 22:3הַחֵ֣פֶץ לְ֭שַׁדַּי כִּ֣י תִצְדָּ֑ק וְאִם־בֶּ֝֗צַע כִּֽי־תַתֵּ֥ם דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃Jb 22:3
Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous?
Or does it benefit him, that you make your ways perfect?
4Jb 22:44ἦ λόγον σου ποιούμενος ἐλέγξει σε καὶ συνεισελεύσεταί σοι εἰς κρίσινJb 22:4
Wilt thou maintain and plead thine own cause? and will he enter into judgment with thee?

Is it for your piety that he reproves you,
that he enters with you into judgment?
Jb 22:4Jb 22:4הֲֽ֭מִיִּרְאָ֣תְךָ יֹכִיחֶ֑ךָ יָב֥וֹא עִ֝מְּךָ֗ בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃Jb 22:4

5Jb 22:55πότερον οὐχ ἡ κακία σού ἐστιν πολλή ἀναρίθμητοι δέ σού εἰσιν αἱ ἁμαρτίαιJb 22:5
Is not thy wickedness abundant, and thy sins innumerable?

Isn’t your wickedness great?
Neither is there any end to your iniquities.

Isn’t your wickedness great?
Neither is there any end to your iniquities.
6Jb 22:66ἠνεχύραζες δὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου διὰ κενῆς ἀμφίασιν δὲ γυμνῶν ἀφείλουJb 22:6
And thou hast taken security of thy brethren for nothing, and hast taken away the clothing of the naked.
Jb 22:6
For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing,
and stripped the naked of their clothing.
Jb 22:6Jb 22:6כִּֽי־תַחְבֹּ֣ל אַחֶ֣יךָ חִנָּ֑ם וּבִגְדֵ֖י עֲרוּמִּ֣ים תַּפְשִֽׁיט׃Jb 22:6
For you have taken pledges from your brother for nothing,
and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7Jb 22:77οὐδὲ ὕδωρ διψῶντας ἐπότισας ἀλλὰ πεινώντων ἐστέρησας ψωμόνJb 22:7
Neither hast thou given water to the thirsty to drink, but hast taken away the morsel of the hungry.
Jb 22:7
You haven’t given water to the weary to drink,

And thou hast accepted the persons of some; and thou hast established those that were already settled on the earth.

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth.
The honorable man, he lived in it.
Jb 22:8Jb 22:8וְאִ֣ישׁ זְ֭רוֹעַ ל֣וֹ הָאָ֑רֶץ וּנְשׂ֥וּא פָ֝נִ֗ים יֵ֣שֶׁב בָּֽהּ׃Jb 22:8
But as for the mighty man, he had the earth.
The honorable man, he lived in it.
9Jb 22:99χήρας δὲ ἐξαπέστειλας κενάς ὀρφανοὺς δὲ ἐκάκωσαςJb 22:9
But thou hast sent widows away empty, and has afflicted orphans.
Jb 22:9
You have sent widows away empty,
and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
Jb 22:9Jb 22:9אַ֭לְמָנוֹת שִׁלַּ֣חְתָּ רֵיקָ֑ם וּזְרֹע֖וֹת יְתֹמִ֣ים יְדֻכָּֽא׃Jb 22:9

10Jb 22:1010τοιγαροῦν ἐκύκλωσάν σε παγίδες καὶ ἐσπούδασέν σε πόλεμος ἐξαίσιοςJb 22:10
Therefore snares have compassed thee, and disastrous war has troubled thee.

Therefore snares are around you.
Sudden fear troubles you,
Jb 22:10Jb 22:10עַל־כֵּ֭ן סְבִיבוֹתֶ֣יךָ פַחִ֑ים וִֽ֝יבַהֶלְךָ פַּ֣חַד פִּתְאֹֽם׃Jb 22:10
Therefore snares are around you.

11Jb 22:1111τὸ φῶς σοι σκότος ἀπέβη κοιμηθέντα δὲ ὕδωρ σε ἐκάλυψενJb 22:11
The light has proved darkness to thee, and water has covered thee on thy lying down.

or darkness, so that you can not see,
and floods of waters cover you.

12Jb 22:1212μὴ οὐχὶ ὁ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ναίων ἐφορᾷ τοὺς δὲ ὕβρει φερομένους ἐταπείνωσενJb 22:12
Does not he that dwells in the high places observe? and has he not brought down the proud?

“Isn’t God in the heights of heaven?
See the height of the stars, how high they are!
Jb 22:12Jb 22:12הֲ‍ֽלֹא־אֱ֭לוֹהַּ גֹּ֣בַהּ שָׁמָ֑יִם וּרְאֵ֤ה רֹ֖אשׁ כּוֹכָבִ֣ים כִּי־רָֽמּוּ׃Jb 22:12
“Isn’t God in the heights of heaven?
See the height of the stars, how high they are!
13Jb 22:1313καὶ εἶπας τί ἔγνω ὁ ἰσχυρός ἦ κατὰ τοῦ γνόφου κρινεῖJb 22:13
And thou has said, What does the Mighty One know? does he judge in the dark?

You say, ‘What does God know?
Can he judge through the thick darkness?
Jb 22:13Jb 22:13וְֽ֭אָמַרְתָּ מַה־יָּ֣דַֽע אֵ֑ל הַבְעַ֖ד עֲרָפֶ֣ל יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃Jb 22:13
You say, ‘What does God know?
Can he judge through the thick darkness?
14Jb 22:1414νέφη ἀποκρυφὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐχ ὁραθήσεται καὶ γῦρον οὐρανοῦ διαπορεύσεταιJb 22:14
A cloud is his hiding-place, and he shall not be seen; and he passes through the circle of heaven.

Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he doesn’t see.
He walks on the vault of the sky.’

which wicked men have trodden,
Jb 22:15Jb 22:15הַאֹ֣רַח עוֹלָ֣ם תִּשְׁמֹ֑ר אֲשֶׁ֖ר דָּרְכ֣וּ מְתֵי־אָֽוֶן׃Jb 22:15
Will you keep the old way,
which wicked men have trodden,
16Jb 22:1616οἳ συνελήμφθησαν ἄωροι ποταμὸς ἐπιρρέων οἱ θεμέλιοι αὐτῶνJb 22:16
who were seized before their time: their foundations are as an overflowing stream.

17Jb 22:1717οἱ λέγοντες κύριος τί ποιήσει ἡμῖν ἢ τί ἐπάξεται ἡμῖν ὁ παντοκράτωρJb 22:17
Who say, What will the Lord do to us? or what will the Almighty bring upon us?

who said to God, ‘Depart from us;’
and, ‘What can the Almighty do for us?’
Jb 22:17Jb 22:17הָאֹמְרִ֣ים לָ֭אֵל ס֣וּר מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וּמַה־יִּפְעַ֖ל שַׁדַּ֣י לָֽמוֹ׃Jb 22:17
who said to God, ‘Depart from us;’
and, ‘What can the Almighty do for us?’
18Jb 22:1818ὃς δὲ ἐνέπλησεν τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν ἀγαθῶν βουλὴ δὲ ἀσεβῶν πόρρω ἀπ’ αὐτοῦJb 22:18
Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel for the wicked is far from him.

Yet he filled their houses with good things,
but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19Jb 22:1919ἰδόντες δίκαιοι ἐγέλασαν ἄμεμπτος δὲ ἐμυκτήρισενJb 22:19
The righteous have seen it, and laughed, and the blameless one has derided them.

The righteous see it, and are glad.
The innocent ridicule them,
Jb 22:19Jb 22:19יִרְא֣וּ צַדִּיקִ֣ים וְיִשְׂמָ֑חוּ וְ֝נָקִ֗י יִלְעַג־לָֽמוֹ׃Jb 22:19
The righteous see it, and are glad.

20Jb 22:2020εἰ μὴ ἠφανίσθη ἡ ὑπόστασις αὐτῶν καὶ τὸ κατάλειμμα αὐτῶν καταφάγεται πῦρJb 22:20
Verily their substance has been utterly destroyed, and the fire shall devour what is left of their property.

saying, ‘Surely those who rose up against us are cut off.
The fire has consumed the remnant of them.’
Jb 22:20Jb 22:20אִם־לֹ֣א נִכְחַ֣ד קִימָ֑נוּ וְ֝יִתְרָ֗ם אָ֣כְלָה אֵֽשׁ׃Jb 22:20

21Jb 22:2121γενοῦ δὴ σκληρός ἐὰν ὑπομείνῃς εἶτ’ ὁ καρπός σου ἔσται ἐν ἀγαθοῖςJb 22:21
Be firm, I pray thee, if thou canst endure; then thy fruit shall prosper.

“Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace.
Thereby good shall come to you.

22Jb 22:2222ἔκλαβε δὲ ἐκ στόματος αὐτοῦ ἐξηγορίαν καὶ ἀνάλαβε τὰ ῥήματα αὐτοῦ ἐν καρδίᾳ σουJb 22:22
And receive a declaration from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

Please receive instruction from his mouth,
and lay up his words in your heart.

Please receive instruction from his mouth,
and lay up his words in your heart.
23Jb 22:2323ἐὰν δὲ ἐπιστραφῇς καὶ ταπεινώσῃς σεαυτὸν ἔναντι κυρίου πόρρω ἐποίησας ἀπὸ διαίτης σου τὸ ἄδικονJb 22:23
And if thou shalt turn and humble thyself before the Lord, thou hast thus removed unrighteousness far from thy habitation.

If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up,
if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents.

Thou shalt lay up for thyself treasure in a heap on the rock; and Sophir shall be as the rock of the torrent.

So the Almighty shall be thy helper from enemies, and he shall bring thee forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire.

Then shalt thou have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven.

For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty,
and shall lift up your face to God.

27Jb 22:2727εὐξαμένου δέ σου πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰσακούσεταί σου δώσει δέ σοι ἀποδοῦναι τὰς εὐχάςJb 22:27
And he shall hear thee when thou prayest to him, and he shall grant thee power to pay thy vows.

You shall make your prayer to him, and he will hear you.

You shall make your prayer to him, and he will hear you.

28Jb 22:2828ἀποκαταστήσει δέ σοι δίαιταν δικαιοσύνης ἐπὶ δὲ ὁδοῖς σου ἔσται φέγγοςJb 22:28
And he shall establish to thee again a habitation of righteousness and there shall be light upon thy paths.

You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established to you.
Light shall shine on your ways.

29Jb 22:2929ὅτι ἐταπείνωσεν αὐτόν καὶ ἐρεῖς ὑπερηφανεύσατο καὶ κύφοντα ὀφθαλμοῖς σώσειJb 22:29
Because thou hast humbled thyself; and thou shalt say, Man has behaved proudly, but he shall save him that is of lowly eyes.

When they cast down, you shall say, ‘be lifted up.’
He will save the humble person.
Jb 22:29Jb 22:29כִּֽי־הִ֭שְׁפִּילוּ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר גֵּוָ֑ה וְשַׁ֖ח עֵינַ֣יִם יוֹשִֽׁעַ׃Jb 22:29

30Jb 22:3030ῥύσεται ἀθῷον καὶ διασώθητι ἐν καθαραῖς χερσίν σουJb 22:30
He shall deliver the innocent, and do thou save thyself by thy pure hands.

Yes, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
