Jb 20:1Jb 20:1וַ֭יַּעַן צֹפַ֥ר הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃Jb 20:1
¶Then Zophar the Naamathite answered,
2Jb 20:22οὐχ οὕτως ὑπελάμβανον ἀντερεῖν σε ταῦτα καὶ οὐχὶ συνίετε μᾶλλον ἢ καὶ ἐγώJb 20:2
I did not suppose that thou wouldest answer thus: neither do ye understand more than I.
Jb 20:2
“Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me,
even by reason of my haste that is in me.
Jb 20:2Jb 20:2לָ֭כֵן שְׂעִפַּ֣י יְשִׁיב֑וּנִי וּ֝בַעֲב֗וּר ח֣וּשִׁי בִֽי׃Jb 20:2
“Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me,
even by reason of my haste that is in me.
3Jb 20:33παιδείαν ἐντροπῆς μου ἀκούσομαι καὶ πνεῦμα ἐκ τῆς συνέσεως ἀποκρίνεταί μοιJb 20:3
I will hear my shameful reproach; and the spirit of my understanding answers me.

4Jb 20:44μὴ ταῦτα ἔγνως ἀπὸ τοῦ ἔτι ἀφ’ οὗ ἐτέθη ἄνθρωπος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆςJb 20:4
Hast thou not known these things of old, from the time that man was set upon the earth?
Jb 20:4
Don’t you know this from old time,
since man was placed on earth,
Jb 20:4Jb 20:4הֲזֹ֣את יָ֭דַעְתָּ מִנִּי־עַ֑ד מִנִּ֤י שִׂ֖ים אָדָ֣ם עֲלֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃Jb 20:4
Don’t you know this from old time,
since man was placed on earth,
5Jb 20:55εὐφροσύνη γὰρ ἀσεβῶν πτῶμα ἐξαίσιον χαρμονὴ δὲ παρανόμων ἀπώλειαJb 20:5
But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall, and the joy of transgressors is destruction:
Jb 20:5
that the triumphing of the wicked is short,
the joy of the godless but for a moment?
Jb 20:5Jb 20:5כִּ֤י רִנְנַ֣ת רְ֭שָׁעִים מִקָּר֑וֹב וְשִׂמְחַ֖ת חָנֵ֣ף עֲדֵי־רָֽגַע׃Jb 20:5
that the triumphing of the wicked is short,
the joy of the godless but for a moment?
6Jb 20:66ἐὰν ἀναβῇ εἰς οὐρανὸν αὐτοῦ τὰ δῶρα ἡ δὲ θυσία αὐτοῦ νεφῶν ἅψηταιJb 20:6
although his gifts should go up to heaven, and his sacrifice reach the clouds.

Though his height mount up to the heavens,
and his head reach to the clouds,
Jb 20:6Jb 20:6אִם־יַעֲלֶ֣ה לַשָּׁמַ֣יִם שִׂיא֑וֹ וְ֝רֹאשׁ֗וֹ לָעָ֥ב יַגִּֽיעַ׃Jb 20:6
Though his height mount up to the heavens,
and his head reach to the clouds,
7Jb 20:77ὅταν γὰρ δοκῇ ἤδη κατεστηρίχθαι τότε εἰς τέλος ἀπολεῖται οἱ δὲ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐροῦσιν ποῦ ἐστινJb 20:7
For when he shall seem to be now established, then he shall utterly perish: and they that knew him shall say, Where is he?
Jb 20:7
yet he shall perish forever like his own dung.
Those who have seen him shall say, ‘Where is he?’
Jb 20:7Jb 20:7כְּֽ֭גֶלֲלוֹ לָנֶ֣צַח יֹאבֵ֑ד רֹ֝אָ֗יו יֹאמְר֥וּ אַיּֽוֹ׃Jb 20:7
yet he shall perish forever like his own dung.
Those who have seen him shall say, ‘Where is he?’
8Jb 20:88ὥσπερ ἐνύπνιον ἐκπετασθὲν οὐ μὴ εὑρεθῇ ἔπτη δὲ ὥσπερ φάσμα νυκτερινόνJb 20:8
Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; and he has fled like a vision of the night.
Jb 20:8
He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found.
Yes, he shall be chased away like a vision of the night.
Jb 20:8Jb 20:8כַּחֲל֣וֹם יָ֭עוּף וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָא֑וּהוּ וְ֝יֻדַּ֗ד כְּחֶזְי֥וֹן לָֽיְלָה׃Jb 20:8
He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found.
Yes, he shall be chased away like a vision of the night.
9Jb 20:99ὀφθαλμὸς παρέβλεψεν καὶ οὐ προσθήσει καὶ οὐκέτι προσνοήσει αὐτὸν ὁ τόπος αὐτοῦJb 20:9
The eye has looked upon him, but shall not see him again; and his place shall no longer perceive him.
Jb 20:9
The eye which saw him shall see him no more,
neither shall his place any more see him.
Jb 20:9Jb 20:9עַ֣יִן שְׁ֭זָפַתּוּ וְלֹ֣א תוֹסִ֑יף וְלֹא־ע֝֗וֹד תְּשׁוּרֶ֥נּוּ מְקוֹמֽוֹ׃Jb 20:9
The eye which saw him shall see him no more,
neither shall his place any more see him.
10Jb 20:1010τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ὀλέσαισαν ἥττονες αἱ δὲ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ πυρσεύσαισαν ὀδύναςJb 20:10
Let his inferiors destroy his children, and let his hands kindle the fire of sorrow.
Jb 20:10
His children shall seek the favor of the poor.
His hands shall give back his wealth.
Jb 20:10Jb 20:10בָּ֭נָיו יְרַצּ֣וּ דַלִּ֑ים וְ֝יָדָ֗יו תָּשֵׁ֥בְנָה אוֹנֽוֹ׃Jb 20:10
His children shall seek the favor of the poor.
His hands shall give back his wealth.
11Jb 20:1111ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ ἐνεπλήσθησαν νεότητος αὐτοῦ καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ χώματος κοιμηθήσεταιJb 20:11
His bones have been filled with vigour of his youth, and it shall lie down with him in the dust.

His bones are full of his youth,

Jb 20:11
His bones are full of his youth,
but youth shall lie down with him in the dust.
12Jb 20:1212ἐὰν γλυκανθῇ ἐν στόματι αὐτοῦ κακία κρύψει αὐτὴν ὑπὸ τὴν γλῶσσαν αὐτοῦJb 20:12
Though evil be sweet in his mouth, though he will hide it under his tongue;

“Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth,
though he hide it under his tongue,
Jb 20:12Jb 20:12אִם־תַּמְתִּ֣יק בְּפִ֣יו רָעָ֑ה יַ֝כְחִידֶ֗נָּה תַּ֣חַת לְשׁוֹנֽוֹ׃Jb 20:12
“Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth,
though he hide it under his tongue,
13Jb 20:1313οὐ φείσεται αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ ἐγκαταλείψει αὐτὴν καὶ συνέξει αὐτὴν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λάρυγγος αὐτοῦJb 20:13
though he will not spare it, and will not leave it, but will keep it in the midst of his throat:

though he spare it, and will not let it go,
but keep it still within his mouth;
Jb 20:13Jb 20:13יַחְמֹ֣ל עָ֭לֶיהָ וְלֹ֣א יַֽעַזְבֶ֑נָּה וְ֝יִמְנָעֶ֗נָּה בְּת֣וֹךְ חִכּֽוֹ׃Jb 20:13
though he spare it, and will not let it go,
but keep it still within his mouth;
14Jb 20:1414καὶ οὐ μὴ δυνηθῇ βοηθῆσαι ἑαυτῷ χολὴ ἀσπίδος ἐν γαστρὶ αὐτοῦJb 20:14
yet he shall not at all be able to help himself; the gall of an asp is in his belly.
Jb 20:14
yet his food in his bowels is turned.
It is cobra venom within him.
Jb 20:14Jb 20:14לַ֭חְמוֹ בְּמֵעָ֣יו נֶהְפָּ֑ךְ מְרוֹרַ֖ת פְּתָנִ֣ים בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃Jb 20:14

15Jb 20:1515πλοῦτος ἀδίκως συναγόμενος ἐξεμεσθήσεται ἐξ οἰκίας αὐτοῦ ἐξελκύσει αὐτὸν ἄγγελοςJb 20:15
His wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up; a messenger of wrath shall drag him out of his house.
Jb 20:15
He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again.
God will cast them out of his belly.
Jb 20:15Jb 20:15חַ֣יִל בָּ֭לַע וַיְקִאֶ֑נּוּ מִ֝בִּטְנ֗וֹ יֽוֹרִשֶׁ֥נּוּ אֵֽל׃Jb 20:15
He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again.
God will cast them out of his belly.
16Jb 20:1616θυμὸν δὲ δρακόντων θηλάσειεν ἀνέλοι δὲ αὐτὸν γλῶσσα ὄφεωςJb 20:16
And let him suck the poison of serpents, and let the serpent's tongue slay him.
Jb 20:16
He shall suck cobra venom.
The viper’s tongue shall kill him.
Jb 20:16Jb 20:16רֹאשׁ־פְּתָנִ֥ים יִינָ֑ק תַּֽ֝הַרְגֵ֗הוּ לְשׁ֣וֹן אֶפְעֶֽה׃Jb 20:16
He shall suck cobra venom.

17Jb 20:1717μὴ ἴδοι ἄμελξιν νομάδων μηδὲ νομὰς μέλιτος καὶ βουτύρουJb 20:17
Let him not see the milk of the pastures, nor the supplies of honey and butter.
Jb 20:17
He shall not look at the rivers,
the flowing streams of honey and butter.
Jb 20:17Jb 20:17אַל־יֵ֥רֶא בִפְלַגּ֑וֹת נַהֲרֵ֥י נַ֝חֲלֵ֗י דְּבַ֣שׁ וְחֶמְאָֽה׃Jb 20:17
He shall not look at the rivers,
the flowing streams of honey and butter.
18Jb 20:1818εἰς κενὰ καὶ μάταια ἐκοπίασεν πλοῦτον ἐξ οὗ οὐ γεύσεται ὥσπερ στρίφνος ἀμάσητος ἀκατάποτοςJb 20:18
He has laboured unprofitably and in vain, for wealth of which he shall not taste: it is as a lean thing, unfit for food, which he cannot swallow.
Jb 20:18
That for which he labored he shall restore, and shall not swallow it down.
According to the substance that he has gotten, he shall not rejoice.
Jb 20:18Jb 20:18מֵשִׁ֣יב יָ֭גָע וְלֹ֣א יִבְלָ֑ע כְּחֵ֥יל תְּ֝מוּרָת֗וֹ וְלֹ֣א יַעֲלֹֽס׃Jb 20:18
That for which he labored he shall restore, and shall not swallow it down.

19Jb 20:1919πολλῶν γὰρ ἀδυνάτων οἴκους ἔθλασεν δίαιταν δὲ ἥρπασεν καὶ οὐκ ἔστησενJb 20:19
For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men: and he has plundered an habitation, though he built it not.
Jb 20:19
For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor.
He has violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up.

There is no security to his possessions; he shall not be saved by his desire.

“Because he knew no quietness within him,
he shall not save anything of that in which he delights.
Jb 20:20Jb 20:20כִּ֤י ׀ לֹא־יָדַ֣ע שָׁלֵ֣ו בְּבִטְנ֑וֹ בַּ֝חֲמוּד֗וֹ לֹ֣א יְמַלֵּֽט׃Jb 20:20
“Because he knew no quietness within him,
he shall not save anything of that in which he delights.
21Jb 20:2121οὐκ ἔστιν ὑπόλειμμα τοῖς βρώμασιν αὐτοῦ διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἀνθήσει αὐτοῦ τὰ ἀγαθάJb 20:21
There is nothing remaining of his provisions; therefore his goods shall not flourish.
Jb 20:21
There was nothing left that he didn’t devour,
therefore his prosperity shall not endure.
Jb 20:21Jb 20:21אֵין־שָׂרִ֥יד לְאָכְל֑וֹ עַל־כֵּ֝֗ן לֹא־יָחִ֥יל טוּבֽוֹ׃Jb 20:21
There was nothing left that he didn’t devour,
therefore his prosperity shall not endure.
22Jb 20:2222ὅταν δὲ δοκῇ ἤδη πεπληρῶσθαι θλιβήσεται πᾶσα δὲ ἀνάγκη ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἐπελεύσεταιJb 20:22
But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened; and all distress shall come upon him.
Jb 20:22
In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress shall overtake him.
The hand of everyone who is in misery shall come on him.
Jb 20:22Jb 20:22בִּמְלֹ֣אות שִׂ֭פְקוֹ יֵ֣צֶר ל֑וֹ כָּל־יַ֖ד עָמֵ֣ל תְּבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃Jb 20:22

The hand of everyone who is in misery shall come on him.
23Jb 20:2323εἴ πως πληρώσαι γαστέρα αὐτοῦ ἐπαποστείλαι ἐπ’ αὐτὸν θυμὸν ὀργῆς νίψαι ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ὀδύναςJb 20:23
If by any means he would fill his belly, let God send upon him the fury of wrath; let him bring a torrent of pains upon him.

When he is about to fill his belly, God will cast the fierceness of his wrath on him.
It will rain on him while he is eating.

And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; let the brazen bow wound him.

25Jb 20:2525διεξέλθοι δὲ διὰ σώματος αὐτοῦ βέλος ἀστραπαὶ δὲ ἐν διαίταις αὐτοῦ περιπατήσαισαν ἐπ’ αὐτῷ φόβοιJb 20:25
And let the arrow pierce through his body; and let the stars be against his dwelling-place: let terrors come upon him.

Yes, the glittering point comes out of his liver.

Terrors are on him.
26Jb 20:2626πᾶν δὲ σκότος αὐτῷ ὑπομείναι κατέδεται αὐτὸν πῦρ ἄκαυστον κακώσαι δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπήλυτος τὸν οἶκονJb 20:26
And let all darkness wait for him: a fire that burns not out shall consume him; and let a stranger plague his house.
Jb 20:26
All darkness is laid up for his treasures.

28Jb 20:2828ἑλκύσαι τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεια εἰς τέλος ἡμέρα ὀργῆς ἐπέλθοι αὐτῷJb 20:28
Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him.
Jb 20:28
The increase of his house shall depart.
They shall rush away in the day of his wrath.
Jb 20:28Jb 20:28יִ֭גֶל יְב֣וּל בֵּית֑וֹ נִ֝גָּר֗וֹת בְּי֣וֹם אַפּֽוֹ׃Jb 20:28

29Jb 20:2929αὕτη ἡ μερὶς ἀνθρώπου ἀσεβοῦς παρὰ κυρίου καὶ κτῆμα ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ παρὰ τοῦ ἐπισκόπουJb 20:29
This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of his goods appointed him by the all-seeing God.
Jb 20:29
This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
the heritage appointed to him by God.”
Jb 20:29Jb 20:29זֶ֤ה ׀ חֵֽלֶק־אָדָ֣ם רָ֭שָׁע מֵאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְנַחֲלַ֖ת אִמְר֣וֹ מֵאֵֽל׃ פ Jb 20:29
This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
the heritage appointed to him by God.”
