And Rachel having perceived that she bore Jacob no children, was jealous of her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children; and if not, I shall die.

¶When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I will die.”

¶When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I will die.”
2Gn 30:22ἐθυμώθη δὲ Ιακωβ τῇ Ραχηλ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ μὴ ἀντὶ θεοῦ ἐγώ εἰμι ὃς ἐστέρησέν σε καρπὸν κοιλίαςGn 30:2
And Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said to her, Am I in the place of God, who has deprived thee of the fruit of the womb?

¶Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in God’s place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”

¶Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in God’s place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
3Gn 30:33εἶπεν δὲ Ραχηλ τῷ Ιακωβ ἰδοὺ ἡ παιδίσκη μου Βαλλα εἴσελθε πρὸς αὐτήν καὶ τέξεται ἐπὶ τῶν γονάτων μου καὶ τεκνοποιήσομαι κἀγὼ ἐξ αὐτῆςGn 30:3
And Rachel said to Jacob, Behold my handmaid Balla, go in to her, and she shall bear upon my knees, and I also shall have children by her.

¶She said, “Behold, my maid Bilhah. Go in to her, that she may bear on my knees, and I also may obtain children by her.”

¶She said, “Behold, my maid Bilhah. Go in to her, that she may bear on my knees, and I also may obtain children by her.”
4Gn 30:44καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ Βαλλαν τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτῆς αὐτῷ γυναῖκα εἰσῆλθεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν ΙακωβGn 30:4
And she gave him Balla her maid, for a wife to him; and Jacob went in to her.

And Rachel said, God has given judgment for me, and hearkened to my voice, and has given me a son; therefore she called his name, Dan.

8Gn 30:88καὶ εἶπεν Ραχηλ συνελάβετό μοι ὁ θεός καὶ συνανεστράφην τῇ ἀδελφῇ μου καὶ ἠδυνάσθην καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ΝεφθαλιGn 30:8
And Rachel said, God has helped me, and I contended with my sister and prevailed; and she called his name, Nephthalim.

Rachel said, “With mighty wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed.” She named him Naphtali.

Rachel said, “With mighty wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed.” She named him Naphtali.
9Gn 30:99εἶδεν δὲ Λεια ὅτι ἔστη τοῦ τίκτειν καὶ ἔλαβεν Ζελφαν τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτῆς καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ Ιακωβ γυναῖκαGn 30:9
And Lea saw that she ceased from bearing, and she took Zelpha her maid, and gave her to Jacob for a wife; and he went in to her.

¶When Leah saw that she had finished bearing, she took Zilpah, her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
Gn 30:9Gn 30:9וַתֵּ֣רֶא לֵאָ֔ה כִּ֥י עָמְדָ֖ה מִלֶּ֑דֶת וַתִּקַּח֙ אֶת־זִלְפָּ֣ה שִׁפְחָתָ֔הּ וַתִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛הּ לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב לְאִשָּֽׁה׃Gn 30:9
¶When Leah saw that she had finished bearing, she took Zilpah, her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
10Gn 30:1010εἰσῆλθεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν Ιακωβ καὶ συνέλαβεν Ζελφα ἡ παιδίσκη Λειας καὶ ἔτεκεν τῷ Ιακωβ υἱόνGn 30:10
And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived, and bore Jacob a son.

And Lea said, It is happily: and she called his name, Gad.

Leah said, “How fortunate!” She named him Gad.

Leah said, “How fortunate!” She named him Gad.

And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived yet again, and bore Jacob a second son.

13Gn 30:1313καὶ εἶπεν Λεια μακαρία ἐγώ ὅτι μακαρίζουσίν με αἱ γυναῖκες καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ΑσηρGn 30:13
And Lea said, I am blessed, for the women will pronounce me blessed; and she called his name, Aser.

Leah said, “Happy am I, for the daughters will call me happy.” She named him Asher.
14Gn 30:1414ἐπορεύθη δὲ Ρουβην ἐν ἡμέραις θερισμοῦ πυρῶν καὶ εὗρεν μῆλα μανδραγόρου ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ καὶ ἤνεγκεν αὐτὰ πρὸς Λειαν τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ εἶπεν δὲ Ραχηλ τῇ Λεια δός μοι τῶν μανδραγορῶν τοῦ υἱοῦ σουGn 30:14
And Ruben went in the day of barley-harvest, and found apples of mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Lea; and Rachel said to Lea her sister, Give me of thy son's mandrakes.

¶Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother, Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
Gn 30:14Gn 30:14וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֜ן בִּימֵ֣י קְצִיר־חִטִּ֗ים וַיִּמְצָ֤א דֽוּדָאִים֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַיָּבֵ֣א אֹתָ֔ם אֶל־לֵאָ֖ה אִמּ֑וֹ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רָחֵל֙ אֶל־לֵאָ֔ה תְּנִי־נָ֣א לִ֔י מִדּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנֵֽךְ׃Gn 30:14
¶Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother, Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
15Gn 30:1515εἶπεν δὲ Λεια οὐχ ἱκανόν σοι ὅτι ἔλαβες τὸν ἄνδρα μου μὴ καὶ τοὺς μανδραγόρας τοῦ υἱοῦ μου λήμψῃ εἶπεν δὲ Ραχηλ οὐχ οὕτως κοιμηθήτω μετὰ σοῦ τὴν νύκτα ταύτην ἀντὶ τῶν μανδραγορῶν τοῦ υἱοῦ σουGn 30:15
And Lea said, Is it not enough for thee that thou hast taken my husband, wilt thou also take my son's mandrakes? And Rachel said, Not so: let him lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.

¶She said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes, also?”
¶Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”
Gn 30:15Gn 30:15וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לָ֗הּ הַמְעַט֙ קַחְתֵּ֣ךְ אֶת־אִישִׁ֔י וְלָקַ֕חַת גַּ֥ם אֶת־דּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנִ֑י וַתֹּ֣אמֶר רָחֵ֗ל לָכֵן֙ יִשְׁכַּ֤ב עִמָּךְ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה תַּ֖חַת דּוּדָאֵ֥י בְנֵֽךְ׃Gn 30:15
¶She said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes, also?”
¶Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”
16Gn 30:1616εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Ιακωβ ἐξ ἀγροῦ ἑσπέρας καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Λεια εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ εἶπεν πρός με εἰσελεύσῃ σήμερον μεμίσθωμαι γάρ σε ἀντὶ τῶν μανδραγορῶν τοῦ υἱοῦ μου καὶ ἐκοιμήθη μετ’ αὐτῆς τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνηνGn 30:16
And Jacob came in out of the field at even; and Lea went forth to meet him, and said, Thou shalt come in to me this day, for I have hired thee for my son's mandrakes; and he lay with her that night.

¶Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, “You must come in to me; for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”

¶Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, “You must come in to me; for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”

And God hearkened to Lea, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.

God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.
18Gn 30:1818καὶ εἶπεν Λεια ἔδωκεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν μισθόν μου ἀνθ’ οὗ ἔδωκα τὴν παιδίσκην μου τῷ ἀνδρί μου καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ισσαχαρ ὅ ἐστιν ΜισθόςGn 30:18
And Lea said, God has given me my reward, because I gave my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar, which is, Reward.

Leah said, “God has given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband.” She named him Issachar.
Gn 30:18Gn 30:18וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאָ֗ה נָתַ֤ן אֱלֹהִים֙ שְׂכָרִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי שִׁפְחָתִ֖י לְאִישִׁ֑י וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יִשָּׂשכָֽר׃Gn 30:18
Leah said, “God has given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband.” She named him Issachar.
19Gn 30:1919καὶ συνέλαβεν ἔτι Λεια καὶ ἔτεκεν υἱὸν ἕκτον τῷ ΙακωβGn 30:19
And Lea conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son.

Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
20Gn 30:2020καὶ εἶπεν Λεια δεδώρηταί μοι ὁ θεὸς δῶρον καλόν ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ αἱρετιεῖ με ὁ ἀνήρ μου ἔτεκον γὰρ αὐτῷ υἱοὺς ἕξ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ΖαβουλωνGn 30:20
And Lea said, God has given me a good gift in this time; my husband will choose me, for I have born him six sons: and she called his name, Zabulon.

Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good dowry. Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons.” She named him Zebulun.

Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good dowry. Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons.” She named him Zebulun.
21Gn 30:2121καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἔτεκεν θυγατέρα καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς ΔιναGn 30:21
And after this she bore a daughter; and she called her name, Dina.

23Gn 30:2323καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν τῷ Ιακωβ υἱόν εἶπεν δὲ Ραχηλ ἀφεῖλεν ὁ θεός μου τὸ ὄνειδοςGn 30:23
And she conceived, and bore Jacob a son; and Rachel said, God has taken away my reproach.

24Gn 30:2424καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ιωσηφ λέγουσα προσθέτω ὁ θεός μοι υἱὸν ἕτερονGn 30:24
And she called his name Joseph, saying, Let God add to me another son.

She named him Joseph, saying, “May Yahweh add another son to me.”

She named him Joseph, saying, “May Yahweh add another son to me.”
25Gn 30:2525ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς ἔτεκεν Ραχηλ τὸν Ιωσηφ εἶπεν Ιακωβ τῷ Λαβαν ἀπόστειλόν με ἵνα ἀπέλθω εἰς τὸν τόπον μου καὶ εἰς τὴν γῆν μουGn 30:25
And it came to pass when Rachel had born Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land.

¶It happened, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.

¶It happened, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.
26Gn 30:2626ἀπόδος τὰς γυναῖκάς μου καὶ τὰ παιδία περὶ ὧν δεδούλευκά σοι ἵνα ἀπέλθω σὺ γὰρ γινώσκεις τὴν δουλείαν ἣν δεδούλευκά σοιGn 30:26
Restore my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, that I may depart, for thou knowest the service wherewith I have served thee.

Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service with which I have served you.”

Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service with which I have served you.”
27Gn 30:2727εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Λαβαν εἰ εὗρον χάριν ἐναντίον σου οἰωνισάμην ἄν εὐλόγησεν γάρ με ὁ θεὸς τῇ σῇ εἰσόδῳGn 30:27
And Laban said to him, If I have found grace in thy sight, I would augur well, for the Lord has blessed me at thy coming in.

¶Laban said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, stay here, for I have divined that Yahweh has blessed me for your sake.”

Appoint me thy wages, and I will give them.

29Gn 30:2929εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ιακωβ σὺ γινώσκεις ἃ δεδούλευκά σοι καὶ ὅσα ἦν κτήνη σου μετ’ ἐμοῦGn 30:29
And Jacob said, Thou knowest in what things I have served thee, and how many cattle of thine are with me.

¶He said to him, “You know how I have served you, and how your livestock have fared with me.

¶He said to him, “You know how I have served you, and how your livestock have fared with me.
30Gn 30:3030μικρὰ γὰρ ἦν ὅσα σοι ἦν ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ καὶ ηὐξήθη εἰς πλῆθος καὶ ηὐλόγησέν σε κύριος ἐπὶ τῷ ποδί μου νῦν οὖν πότε ποιήσω κἀγὼ ἐμαυτῷ οἶκονGn 30:30
For it was little thou hadst before my time, and it is increased to a multitude, and the Lord God has blessed thee since my coming; now then, when shall I set up also my own house?
Gn 30:30
For it was little which you had before I came, and it has increased to a multitude. Yahweh has blessed you wherever I turned. Now when will I provide for my own house also?”

31Gn 30:3131καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Λαβαν τί σοι δώσω εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ιακωβ οὐ δώσεις μοι οὐθέν ἐὰν ποιήσῃς μοι τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο πάλιν ποιμανῶ τὰ πρόβατά σου καὶ φυλάξωGn 30:31
And Laban said to him, What shall I give thee? and Jacob said to him, Thou shalt not give me anything; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again tend thy flocks and keep them.

¶He said, “What shall I give you?”
¶Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed your flock and keep it.

¶He said, “What shall I give you?”
¶Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed your flock and keep it.
32Gn 30:3232παρελθάτω πάντα τὰ πρόβατά σου σήμερον καὶ διαχώρισον ἐκεῖθεν πᾶν πρόβατον φαιὸν ἐν τοῖς ἀρνάσιν καὶ πᾶν διάλευκον καὶ ῥαντὸν ἐν ταῖς αἰξίν ἔσται μοι μισθόςGn 30:32
Let all thy sheep pass by to-day, and separate thence every grey sheep among the rams, and every one that is speckled and spotted among the goats—this shall be my reward.

I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted one, and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. This will be my hire.

I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted one, and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. This will be my hire.
33Gn 30:3333καὶ ἐπακούσεταί μοι ἡ δικαιοσύνη μου ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ αὔριον ὅτι ἐστὶν ὁ μισθός μου ἐνώπιόν σου πᾶν ὃ ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ ῥαντὸν καὶ διάλευκον ἐν ταῖς αἰξὶν καὶ φαιὸν ἐν τοῖς ἀρνάσιν κεκλεμμένον ἔσται παρ’ ἐμοίGn 30:33
And my righteousness shall answer for me on the morrow, for it is my reward before thee: whatever shall not be spotted and speckled among the goats, and grey among the rams, shall be stolen with me.

So my righteousness will answer for me hereafter, when you come concerning my hire that is before you. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and black among the sheep, that might be with me, will be counted stolen.”

And Laban said to him, Let it be according to thy word.

¶Laban said, “Behold, let it be according to your word.”

35Gn 30:3535καὶ διέστειλεν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τοὺς τράγους τοὺς ῥαντοὺς καὶ τοὺς διαλεύκους καὶ πάσας τὰς αἶγας τὰς ῥαντὰς καὶ τὰς διαλεύκους καὶ πᾶν ὃ ἦν λευκὸν ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ πᾶν ὃ ἦν φαιὸν ἐν τοῖς ἀρνάσιν καὶ ἔδωκεν διὰ χειρὸς τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦGn 30:35
And he separated in that day the spotted and speckled he-goats, and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, and all that was grey among the rams, and every one that was white among them, and he gave them into the hand of his sons.

¶That day, he removed the male goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

¶That day, he removed the male goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36Gn 30:3636καὶ ἀπέστησεν ὁδὸν τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Ιακωβ Ιακωβ δὲ ἐποίμαινεν τὰ πρόβατα Λαβαν τὰ ὑπολειφθένταGn 30:36
And he set a distance of a three days' journey between them and Jacob. And Jacob tended the cattle of Laban that were left behind.

He set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

He set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37Gn 30:3737ἔλαβεν δὲ ἑαυτῷ Ιακωβ ῥάβδον στυρακίνην χλωρὰν καὶ καρυίνην καὶ πλατάνου καὶ ἐλέπισεν αὐτὰς Ιακωβ λεπίσματα λευκὰ περισύρων τὸ χλωρόν ἐφαίνετο δὲ ἐπὶ ταῖς ῥάβδοις τὸ λευκόν ὃ ἐλέπισεν ποικίλονGn 30:37
And Jacob took to himself green rods of storax tree and walnut and plane-tree; and Jacob peeled in them white stripes; and as he drew off the green, the white stripe which he had made appeared alternate on the rods.

¶Jacob took to himself rods of fresh poplar, almond, plane tree, peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.

¶Jacob took to himself rods of fresh poplar, almond, plane tree, peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38Gn 30:3838καὶ παρέθηκεν τὰς ῥάβδους ἃς ἐλέπισεν ἐν ταῖς ληνοῖς τῶν ποτιστηρίων τοῦ ὕδατος ἵνα ὡς ἂν ἔλθωσιν τὰ πρόβατα πιεῖν ἐνώπιον τῶν ῥάβδων ἐλθόντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πιεῖνGn 30:38
And he laid the rods which he had peeled, in the hollows of the watering-troughs, that whensoever the cattle should come to drink, as they should have come to drink before the rods, the cattle might conceive at the rods.

He set the rods which he had peeled opposite the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came to drink. They conceived when they came to drink.

He set the rods which he had peeled opposite the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came to drink. They conceived when they came to drink.
39Gn 30:3939ἐγκισσήσωσιν τὰ πρόβατα εἰς τὰς ῥάβδους καὶ ἔτικτον τὰ πρόβατα διάλευκα καὶ ποικίλα καὶ σποδοειδῆ ῥαντάGn 30:39
So the cattle conceived at the rods, and the cattle brought forth young speckled, and streaked and spotted with ash-coloured spots.

And Jacob separated the lambs, and set before the sheep a speckled ram, and every variegated one among the lambs, and he separated flocks for himself alone, and did not mingle them with the sheep of Laban.

Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the black in the flock of Laban: and he put his own droves apart, and didn’t put them into Laban’s flock.
41Gn 30:4141ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ᾧ ἐνεκίσσησεν τὰ πρόβατα ἐν γαστρὶ λαμβάνοντα ἔθηκεν Ιακωβ τὰς ῥάβδους ἐναντίον τῶν προβάτων ἐν ταῖς ληνοῖς τοῦ ἐγκισσῆσαι αὐτὰ κατὰ τὰς ῥάβδουςGn 30:41
And it came to pass in the time wherein the cattle became pregnant, conceiving in the belly, Jacob put the rods before the cattle in the troughs, that they might conceive by the rods.

It happened, whenever the stronger of the flock conceived, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods;

It happened, whenever the stronger of the flock conceived, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods;
42Gn 30:4242ἡνίκα δ’ ἂν ἔτεκον τὰ πρόβατα οὐκ ἐτίθει ἐγένετο δὲ τὰ ἄσημα τοῦ Λαβαν τὰ δὲ ἐπίσημα τοῦ ΙακωβGn 30:42
But he did not put them in indiscriminately whenever the cattle happened to bring forth, but the unmarked ones were Laban's, and the marked ones were Jacob's.

but when the flock were feeble, he didn’t put them in. So the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.

but when the flock were feeble, he didn’t put them in. So the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
43Gn 30:4343καὶ ἐπλούτησεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος σφόδρα σφόδρα καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτῷ κτήνη πολλὰ καὶ βόες καὶ παῖδες καὶ παιδίσκαι καὶ κάμηλοι καὶ ὄνοιGn 30:43
And the man became very rich, and he had many cattle, and oxen, and servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses.

The man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

The man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
