And Daniel conversed with the king, and was honoured above all his friends.

Now the Babylonians had an idol, called Bel, and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and six vessels of wine.

And the king worshipped it and went daily to adore it: but Daniel worshipped his own God. And the king said unto him, Why dost not thou worship Bel?

do you not worship Bel?” - - - 5 GrDn 14:5 5 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς διὰ τί οὐ προσκυνεῖς τῷ Βηλ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι οὐ σέβομαι εἴδωλα χειροποίητα ἀλλὰ τὸν ζῶντα θεὸν τὸν κτίσαντα τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ ἔχοντα πάσης σαρκὸς κυριείαν Bel 1:5
Who answered and said, Because I may not worship idols made with hands, but the living God, who hath created the heaven and the earth, and hath sovereignty over all flesh.
GrDn 14:5 And the king said to him, “Why do you not bow to Bel?” But H he
answered and said, “ Because I may do
not worship revere idols made with by
hand s, but only the living God, who has created
the heaven and the earth and has sovereignty over all flesh.” - - - 6 GrDn 14:6 6 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς οὐ δοκεῖ σοι Βηλ εἶναι ζῶν θεός ἦ οὐχ ὁρᾷς ὅσα ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν Bel 1:6
Then said the king unto him, Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living God? seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day?
GrDn 14:6 Then the king said to him, “Do es Bel you not
think seem to you that Bel is to be
a living God? Do you not see how much he eats and drinks each and every
day?” - - - 7 GrDn 14:7 7 καὶ εἶπεν Δανιηλ γελάσας μὴ πλανῶ βασιλεῦ οὗτος γὰρ ἔσωθεν μέν ἐστι πηλὸς ἔξωθεν δὲ χαλκὸς καὶ οὐ βέβρωκεν οὐδὲ πέπωκεν πώποτε Bel 1:7
Then Daniel smiled, and said, O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, and did never eat or drink any thing.

So the king was wroth, and called for his priests, and said unto them, If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expenses, ye shall die.
GrDn 14:8 So And the king , was angry being
angered, and called for his priests, and said
to them, “If you do not tell me who it is that devours these
expenses this extravagance, you shall will
die , but if you show that Bel devours them Daniel will die
because he blasphemed against Bel. ! - - - 9 GrDn 14:9 9 καὶ εἶπεν Δανιηλ τῷ βασιλεῖ γινέσθω κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου καὶ ἦσαν ἱερεῖς τοῦ Βηλ ἑβδομήκοντα ἐκτὸς γυναικῶν καὶ τέκνων Bel 1:9
But if ye can certify me that Bel devoureth them, then Daniel shall die: for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king, Let it be according to thy word.
GrDn 14:9 But, if you can prove to me that Bel devours them, then Daniel shall
die, for he has spoken blasphemy against Bel.” And Daniel said
to the king, “Let it be according to your word . ,”
and the priests of Bel were seventy not including wives and children. - - - 10 GrDn 14:10 10 καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς μετὰ Δανιηλ εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Βηλ Bel 1:10
Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten, beside their wives and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel.

of Bel. - - - 11 GrDn 14:11 11 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἱερεῖς τοῦ Βηλ ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀποτρέχομεν ἔξω σὺ δέ βασιλεῦ παράθες τὰ βρώματα καὶ τὸν οἶνον κεράσας θὲς καὶ ἀπόκλεισον τὴν θύραν καὶ σφράγισον τῷ δακτυλίῳ σου καὶ ἐλθὼν πρωὶ ἐὰν μὴ εὕρῃς πάντα βεβρωμένα ὑπὸ τοῦ Βηλ ἀποθανούμεθα ἢ Δανιηλ ὁ ψευδόμενος καθ’ ἡμῶν Bel 1:11
So Bel's priests said, Lo, we go out: but thou, O king, set on the meat, and make ready the wine, and shut the door fast and seal it with thine own signet;
GrDn 14:11 So And Bel’s priests said, “ Lo Behold,
we go out side ; , but you yourself,
O king, set out the meat food and prepare
place the wine after mixing (it) ,
and shut the door fast and seal it with your own signet
ring, ; and coming early in the morning if you should
ever not find everything having been eaten by Bel we will die, else
Daniel, who is telling lies against us. - - - 12 GrDn 14:12 12 αὐτοὶ δὲ κατεφρόνουν ὅτι πεποιήκεισαν ὑπὸ τὴν τράπεζαν κεκρυμμένην εἴσοδον καὶ δι’ αὐτῆς εἰσεπορεύοντο διόλου καὶ ἀνήλουν αὐτά Bel 1:12
And to morrow when thou comest in, if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all, we will suffer death: or else Daniel, that speaketh falsely against us.
GrDn 14:12 And tomorrow when you come in, if you do not find that Bel has eaten
all, we will suffer death, or else Daniel, who speaks falsely against us.” They
were unconcerned because they had made beneath the table a hidden entry
and through it were entering regularly and were consuming them. - - - 13 GrDn 14:13 13 καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐξήλθοσαν ἐκεῖνοι καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς παρέθηκεν τὰ βρώματα τῷ Βηλ Bel 1:13
And they little regarded it: for under the table they had made a privy entrance, whereby they entered in continually, and consumed those things.

So when they were gone forth, the king set meats before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes, and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone: then went they out, and shut the door, and sealed it with the king's signet, and so departed.

Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children, as they were wont to do, and did eat and drink up all.

And the king said, Daniel, are the seals whole? And he said, Yea, O king, they be whole.
And the king said, “Daniel, are the seals whole?” And he said, “Yes, O king, they are whole.”
- - - 18 GrDn 14:18 18 καὶ ἐγένετο ἅμα τῷ ἀνοῖξαι τὰς θύρας ἐπιβλέψας ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν ἐβόησεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ μέγας εἶ Βηλ καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν παρὰ σοὶ δόλος οὐδὲ εἷς Bel 1:18
And as soon as he had opened the dour, the king looked upon the table, and cried with a loud voice, Great art thou, O Bel, and with thee is no deceit at all.

- - - 19 GrDn 14:19 19 καὶ ἐγέλασεν Δανιηλ καὶ ἐκράτησεν τὸν βασιλέα τοῦ μὴ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτὸν ἔσω καὶ εἶπεν ἰδὲ δὴ τὸ ἔδαφος καὶ γνῶθι τίνος τὰ ἴχνη ταῦτα Bel 1:19
Then laughed Daniel, and held the king that he should not go in, and said, Behold now the pavement, and mark well whose footsteps are these.
Then Daniel laughed, and held the king back so that he would not go in, and he said, “Behold now the pavement, and mark well whose footsteps these are.”

And the king said, I see the footsteps of men, women, and children. And then the king was angry,

Therefore the king slew them, and delivered Bel into Daniel's power, who destroyed him and his temple.

And in that same place there was a great dragon, which they of Babylon worshipped.

And the king said unto Daniel, Wilt thou also say that this is of brass? lo, he liveth, he eateth and drinketh; thou canst not say that he is no living god: therefore worship him.
GrDn 14:24 And the king said to Daniel, “ Will you also say that this is of
brass? Lo, he lives, he eats and drinks; y You cannot say
that he this is no t a living god ,” ;
and therefore (said), “ worship Bow
to him it.” - - - 25 GrDn 14:25 25 καὶ εἶπεν Δανιηλ κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ μου προσκυνήσω ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν θεὸς ζῶν σὺ δέ βασιλεῦ δός μοι ἐξουσίαν καὶ ἀποκτενῶ τὸν δράκοντα ἄνευ μαχαίρας καὶ ῥάβδου Bel 1:25
Then said Daniel unto the king, I will worship the Lord my God: for he is the living God.
GrDn 14:25 Then Daniel said to the king, “I will worship
bow to the Lord my God ; for because he is the
living God , but you, King, give me permission. [[a]] and I
will slay the dragon without sword or rod

But give me leave, O king, and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff. The king said, I give thee leave.

king said, “I give (it) to you permission.” - - - 27 GrDn 14:27 27 καὶ ἔλαβεν Δανιηλ πίσσαν καὶ στῆρ καὶ τρίχας καὶ ἥψησεν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ ἐποίησεν μάζας καὶ ἔδωκεν εἰς τὸ στόμα τοῦ δράκοντος καὶ φαγὼν διερράγη ὁ δράκων καὶ εἶπεν ἴδετε τὰ σεβάσματα ὑμῶν Bel 1:27
Then Daniel took pitch, and fat, and hair, and did seethe them together, and made lumps thereof: this he put in the dragon's mouth, and so the dragon burst in sunder: and Daniel said, Lo, these are the gods ye worship.

- - - 28 GrDn 14:28 28 καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσαν οἱ Βαβυλώνιοι ἠγανάκτησαν λίαν καὶ συνεστράφησαν ἐπὶ τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπαν Ιουδαῖος γέγονεν ὁ βασιλεύς τὸν Βηλ κατέσπασεν καὶ τὸν δράκοντα ἀπέκτεινεν καὶ τοὺς ἱερεῖς κατέσφαξεν Bel 1:28
When they of Babylon heard that, they took great indignation, and conspired against the king, saying, The king is become a Jew, and he hath destroyed Bel, he hath slain the dragon, and put the priests to death.
GrDn 14:28 ¶ When they of And as the Babylon ians came
to heard hear (of this ), they
took great indignation were outraged
and [[a]] conspired turned together against the king ,
and saying said, “The king has become a Jew ;
and he has destroyed toppled Bel ; he has
slain and slayed the dragon and put
slaughtered the priests to death.”
- - - 29 GrDn 14:29 29 καὶ εἶπαν ἐλθόντες πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα παράδος ἡμῖν τὸν Δανιηλ εἰ δὲ μή ἀποκτενοῦμέν σε καὶ τὸν οἶκόν σου Bel 1:29
So they came to the king, and said, Deliver us Daniel, or else we will destroy thee and thine house.
GrDn 14:29 So they came And coming to the king and
they said, “ Deliver Hand Daniel over
to us or else we will destroy slay you and your house (hold).” - - - 30 GrDn 14:30 30 καὶ εἶδεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ὅτι ἐπείγουσιν αὐτὸν σφόδρα καὶ ἀναγκασθεὶς παρέδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Δανιηλ Bel 1:30
Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore, being constrained, he delivered Daniel unto them:

Who cast him into the lions' den: where he was six days.

there for six days. - - - 32 GrDn 14:32 32 ἦσαν δὲ ἐν τῷ λάκκῳ ἑπτὰ λέοντες καὶ ἐδίδετο αὐτοῖς τὴν ἡμέραν δύο σώματα καὶ δύο πρόβατα τότε δὲ οὐκ ἐδόθη αὐτοῖς ἵνα καταφάγωσιν τὸν Δανιηλ Bel 1:32
And in the den there were seven lions, and they had given them every day two carcases, and two sheep: which then were not given to them, to the intent they might devour Daniel.

would devour Daniel. - - - 33 GrDn 14:33 33 καὶ ἦν Αμβακουμ ὁ προφήτης ἐν τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ καὶ αὐτὸς ἥψησεν ἕψεμα καὶ ἐνέθρυψεν ἄρτους εἰς σκάφην καὶ ἐπορεύετο εἰς τὸ πεδίον ἀπενέγκαι τοῖς θερισταῖς Bel 1:33
Now there was in Jewry a prophet, called Habbacuc, who had made pottage, and had broken bread in a bowl, and was going into the field, for to bring it to the reapers.
GrDn 14:33 ¶ Now And there was among the Jews a
prophet, called Habbakuk the prophet , who had made
pottage and he boiled a stew and had broken
crumbled bread in to a bowl , and was going into
the field , to [[a]] bring
take (it ) to the reapers.
- - - 34 GrDn 14:34 34 καὶ εἶπεν ἄγγελος κυρίου τῷ Αμβακουμ ἀπένεγκε τὸ ἄριστον ὃ ἔχεις εἰς Βαβυλῶνα τῷ Δανιηλ εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων Bel 1:34
But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc, Go, carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel, who is in the lions' den.
GrDn 14:34 But And the angel of the Lord said to Habbakuk, “ Go,
carry Take the that dinner that which
you have into Babylon to Daniel, who is in to
the pit of the lions ’ den.” - - - 35 GrDn 14:35 35 καὶ εἶπεν Αμβακουμ κύριε Βαβυλῶνα οὐχ ἑώρακα καὶ τὸν λάκκον οὐ γινώσκω Bel 1:35
And Habbacuc said, Lord, I never saw Babylon; neither do I know where the den is.
GrDn 14:35 And Habbakuk said, “Lord, I have never saw
seen Babylon ; neither and do I
not know where the den pit is.” - - - 36 GrDn 14:36 36 καὶ ἐπελάβετο ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου τῆς κορυφῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ βαστάσας τῆς κόμης τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα ἐπάνω τοῦ λάκκου ἐν τῷ ῥοίζῳ τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦ Bel 1:36
Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown, and bare him by the hair of his head, and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den.
GrDn 14:36 Then And the angel of the Lord took him by the
crown, and carried upon bearing him by the hair of
his head , and through the vehemence of his spirit set
placed him in Babylon over the den pit in the whoosh
of his spirit. - - - 37 GrDn 14:37 37 καὶ ἐβόησεν Αμβακουμ λέγων Δανιηλ Δανιηλ λαβὲ τὸ ἄριστον ὃ ἀπέστειλέν σοι ὁ θεός Bel 1:37
And Habbacuc cried, saying, O Daniel, Daniel, take the dinner which God hath sent thee.
GrDn 14:37 And Habbakuk cried out, saying, “ O Daniel,
Daniel, take the dinner which God has sent you.” - - - 38 GrDn 14:38 38 καὶ εἶπεν Δανιηλ ἐμνήσθης γάρ μου ὁ θεός καὶ οὐκ ἐγκατέλιπες τοὺς ἀγαπῶντάς σε Bel 1:38
And Daniel said, Thou hast remembered me, O God: neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee.
GrDn 14:38 And Daniel said, “ For Y you have
remembered me, O God ; neither have you forsaken , and
did not abandon those who seek you and love you.” - - - 39 GrDn 14:39 39 καὶ ἀναστὰς Δανιηλ ἔφαγεν ὁ δὲ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ ἀπεκατέστησεν τὸν Αμβακουμ παραχρῆμα εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ Bel 1:39

And he drew him out, and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den: and they were devoured in a moment before his face.
