Gn 1:20And God said, Let the waters bring forth reptiles having life, and winged creatures flying above the earth in the firmament of heaven, and it was so.Gn 1:20
And God said, “Let the waters swarm teem[a] with swarms of living creatures (aquatic) life,[b][c] and (let there be)[d] let birds flying creatures[e] flying above the earth in across the open expanse separation of (that is) the sky.,[f] and it became so:
———
a Gk. ἐξαγαγέτω τὰ ὕδατα, let the waters bring forth.
b Not "reptiles." Gk. ἑρπετὰ ψυχῶν ζωσῶν, creeping things [ἑρπετόν] among living [ζάω] creatures [ψυχός]. Ἐρπτόν, "crawling" thing, generally includes invertebrates (which includes all insects, both flying and non-flying) and small, "crawling" vertebrates (which includes weasels, rats, desert monitors, shrews, chameleons, geckos, lizards, and mole rats [per Lv. 11:29-30], but not bats [per Lv. 11:19]). In context of the waters, ἑρπετὰ ψυχῶν ζωσῶν must be understood as aquatic life (both swimming and non-swimming) distinct from ἑρπετὰ τῶν ἐρπετῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς (land-based invertebrates and small "crawling" vertebrates, which are later "brought forth" by the land in 1:24) and ἐρπετὰ τῶν πετεινῶν (flying invertebrates, spec. flying insects).
c Cf. ἑρπετὰ ψυχῶν ζωσῶν in 1:20 [ζάω, to live]; vs. ψυχὴν ζῴων ἑρπετῶνin 1:21 [ζῷον, living being] and ψυχὴν ζωῆς in 1:30 [ζωή, life]. (ψυχη is more or less 'our' life [as in, whoever loves or hates his life]; ζωη is life itself [as in, eternal life].)
d The LXX Greek translation seems to imply that the waters brought forth both land-based and flying animals, which is not what the Hebrew says, which says "let the waters teem (or abound)" and "let the winged creatures fly." The skies rather than the waters "brought forth" the flying creatures, and the water "brought forth" water-dwelling creatures rather than land-based.
e Gk. πετεινόν, flying creature (not πτερωτός, winged), is inclusive of birds (ὄρνεον), bats (νυκτερίς) [per Dt. 14:18 and Lv. 11:19], and flying insects (τὰ ἑρπετὰ τῶν πετεινῶν [the invertebrates of the flying creatures]) [per Dt. 14:19 and Lv. 11:20].
f Gk. ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς and κατὰ τὸ στερέωμα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ (applying to the flying creatures) has a sense of complete coverage and unboundedness: over every inch of earth and throughout every inch of sky.
