Gn 1:1

In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth.

Gn 1:2

But the earth was unsightly and unfurnished, and darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God moved over the water.

¶And God said, “Let the water~~s under~~ below the sky be gathered ~~together~~ into one ~~place~~ gathering, and let ~~the~~ dry land ~~appear~~ be seen;,” and it ~~was~~ became so^[a]: the water below the sky was gathered into its gatherings and dry land was seen.

In context of the waters, ἑρπετὰ ψυχῶν ζωσῶν must be understood as aquatic life (both swimming and non-swimming) distinct from ἑρπετὰ τῶν ἐρπετῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς (land-based invertebrates and small "crawling" vertebrates, which are later "brought forth" by the land in 1:24) and ἐρπετὰ τῶν πετεινῶν (flying invertebrates, spec. flying insects).

^c Cf. ἑρπετὰ ψυχῶν ζωσῶν in 1:20 [ζάω, to live]; vs. ψυχὴν ζῴων ἑρπετῶνin 1:21 [ζῷον, living being] and ψυχὴν ζωῆς in 1:30 [ζωή, life]. (ψυχη is more or less 'our' life [as in, whoever loves or hates his life]; ζωη is life itself [as in, eternal life].)

^d The LXX Greek translation seems to imply that the waters brought forth both land-based and flying animals, which is not what the Hebrew says, which says "let the waters teem (or abound)" and "let the winged creatures fly." The skies rather than the waters "brought forth" the flying creatures, and the water "brought forth" water-dwelling creatures rather than land-based.

^e Gk. πετεινόν, flying creature (not πτερωτός, winged), is inclusive of birds (ὄρνεον), bats (νυκτερίς) [per Dt. 14:18 and Lv. 11:19], and flying insects (τὰ ἑρπετὰ τῶν πετεινῶν [the invertebrates of the flying creatures]) [per Dt. 14:19 and Lv. 11:20].

^f Gk. ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς and κατὰ τὸ στερέωμα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ (applying to the flying creatures) has a sense of complete coverage and unboundedness: over every inch of earth and throughout every inch of sky.
