Ps 40:1
For the end, a Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the Lord; and he attended to me, and hearkened to my supplication.

2Ps 40:12קַוֹּ֣ה קִוִּ֣יתִי יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֥ט אֵ֝לַ֗י וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע שַׁוְעָתִֽי׃Ps 40:1
I waited patiently for Yahweh.
He turned to me, and heard my cry.
Ps 39:2Ps 39:2ὑπομένων ὑπέμεινα τὸν κύριον καὶ προσέσχεν μοι καὶ εἰσήκουσεν τῆς δεήσεώς μου2

3Ps 40:23וַיַּעֲלֵ֤נִי ׀ מִבּ֥וֹר שָׁאוֹן֮ מִטִּ֪יט הַיָּ֫וֵ֥ן וַיָּ֖קֶם עַל־סֶ֥לַע רַגְלַ֗י כּוֹנֵ֥ן אֲשֻׁרָֽי׃Ps 40:2
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit,
out of the miry clay.
He set my feet on a rock,
and gave me a firm place to stand.
Ps 39:3Ps 39:3καὶ ἀνήγαγέν με ἐκ λάκκου ταλαιπωρίας καὶ ἀπὸ πηλοῦ ἰλύος καὶ ἔστησεν ἐπὶ πέτραν τοὺς πόδας μου καὶ κατηύθυνεν τὰ διαβήματά μουPs 40:2
And he brought me up out of a pit of misery, and from miry clay: and he set my feet on a rock, and ordered my goings aright.

4Ps 40:34וַיִּתֵּ֬ן בְּפִ֨י ׀ שִׁ֥יר חָדָשׁ֮ תְּהִלָּ֪ה לֵֽאלֹ֫הֵ֥ינוּ יִרְא֣וּ רַבִּ֣ים וְיִירָ֑אוּ וְ֝יִבְטְח֗וּ בַּיהוָֽה׃Ps 40:3
He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God.
Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh.
Ps 39:4Ps 39:4καὶ ἐνέβαλεν εἰς τὸ στόμα μου ᾆσμα καινόν ὕμνον τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν ὄψονται πολλοὶ καὶ φοβηθήσονται καὶ ἐλπιοῦσιν ἐπὶ κύριονPs 40:3
And he put a new song into my mouth, even a hymn to our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall hope in the Lord.

He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God.
Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh.
5Ps 40:45אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי הַגֶּ֗בֶר אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֣ם יְ֭הֹוָה מִבְטַח֑וֹ וְֽלֹא־פָנָ֥ה אֶל־רְ֝הָבִ֗ים וְשָׂטֵ֥י כָזָֽב׃Ps 40:4
Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust,
and doesn’t respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Ps 39:5Ps 39:5μακάριος ἀνήρ οὗ ἐστιν τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου ἐλπὶς αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐνέβλεψεν εἰς ματαιότητας καὶ μανίας ψευδεῖςPs 40:4
Blessed is the man whose hope is in the name of the Lord, and who has not regarded vanities and false frenzies.
Ps 40:4
Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust,
and doesn’t respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
6Ps 40:56רַבּ֤וֹת עָשִׂ֨יתָ ׀ אַתָּ֤ה ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהַי֮ נִֽפְלְאֹתֶ֥יךָ וּמַחְשְׁבֹתֶ֗יךָ אֵ֫לֵ֥ינוּ אֵ֤ין ׀ עֲרֹ֬ךְ אֵלֶ֗יךָ אַגִּ֥ידָה וַאֲדַבֵּ֑רָה עָ֝צְמ֗וּ מִסַּפֵּֽר׃Ps 40:5
Many, Yahweh, my God, are the wonderful works which you have done,
and your thoughts which are toward us.
They can’t be declared back to you.
If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Ps 39:6Ps 39:6πολλὰ ἐποίησας σύ κύριε ὁ θεός μου τὰ θαυμάσιά σου καὶ τοῖς διαλογισμοῖς σου οὐκ ἔστιν τίς ὁμοιωθήσεταί σοι ἀπήγγειλα καὶ ἐλάλησα ἐπληθύνθησαν ὑπὲρ ἀριθμόνPs 40:5
O Lord my God, thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, and in thy thoughts there is none who shall be likened to thee: I declared and spoke of them: they exceeded number.
Ps 40:5
Many, Yahweh, my God, are the wonderful works which you have done,
and your thoughts which are toward us.
They can’t be declared back to you.
If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
7Ps 40:67זֶ֤בַח וּמִנְחָ֨ה ׀ לֹֽא־חָפַ֗צְתָּ אָ֭זְנַיִם כָּרִ֣יתָ לִּ֑י עוֹלָ֥ה וַ֝חֲטָאָ֗ה לֹ֣א שָׁאָֽלְתָּ׃Ps 40:6
Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire.
You have opened my ears.
You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
Ps 39:7Ps 39:7θυσίαν καὶ προσφορὰν οὐκ ἠθέλησας ὠτία δὲ κατηρτίσω μοι ὁλοκαύτωμα καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας οὐκ ᾔτησαςPs 40:6
Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not; but a body hast thou prepared me: whole-burnt-offering and sacrifice for sin thou didst not require.
Ps 40:6
Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire.
You have opened my ears.
You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
8Ps 40:78אָ֣ז אָ֭מַרְתִּי הִנֵּה־בָ֑אתִי בִּמְגִלַּת־סֵ֝֗פֶר כָּת֥וּב עָלָֽי׃Ps 40:7
Then I said, “Behold, I have come.
It is written about me in the book in the scroll.
Ps 39:8Ps 39:8τότε εἶπον ἰδοὺ ἥκω ἐν κεφαλίδι βιβλίου γέγραπται περὶ ἐμοῦPs 40:7
Then I said, Behold, I come: in the volume of the book it is written concerning me,
Ps 40:7
Then I said, “Behold, I have come.
It is written about me in the book in the scroll.
9Ps 40:89לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת־רְצוֹנְךָ֣ אֱלֹהַ֣י חָפָ֑צְתִּי וְ֝ת֥וֹרָתְךָ֗ בְּת֣וֹךְ מֵעָֽי׃Ps 40:8
I delight to do your will, my God.
Yes, your law is within my heart.”
Ps 39:9Ps 39:9τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ θέλημά σου ὁ θεός μου ἐβουλήθην καὶ τὸν νόμον σου ἐν μέσῳ τῆς κοιλίας μουPs 40:8
I desired to do thy will, O my God, and thy law in the midst of mine heart.
Ps 40:8
I delight to do your will, my God.
Yes, your law is within my heart.”
10Ps 40:910בִּשַּׂ֤רְתִּי צֶ֨דֶק ׀ בְּקָ֘הָ֤ל רָ֗ב הִנֵּ֣ה שְׂ֭פָתַי לֹ֣א אֶכְלָ֑א יְ֝הוָ֗ה אַתָּ֥ה יָדָֽעְתָּ׃Ps 40:9
I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly.
Behold, I will not seal my lips, Yahweh, you know.
Ps 39:10Ps 39:10εὐηγγελισάμην δικαιοσύνην ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ μεγάλῃ ἰδοὺ τὰ χείλη μου οὐ μὴ κωλύσω κύριε σὺ ἔγνωςPs 40:9
I have preached righteousness in the great congregation; lo! I will not refrain my lips; O Lord, thou knowest my righteousness.
Ps 40:9
I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly.
Behold, I will not seal my lips, Yahweh, you know.
11Ps 40:1011צִדְקָתְךָ֬ לֹא־כִסִּ֨יתִי ׀ בְּת֬וֹךְ לִבִּ֗י אֱמוּנָתְךָ֣ וּתְשׁוּעָתְךָ֣ אָמָ֑רְתִּי לֹא־כִחַ֥דְתִּי חַסְדְּךָ֥ וַ֝אֲמִתְּךָ֗ לְקָהָ֥ל רָֽב׃Ps 40:10
I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart.
I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation.
I have not concealed your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.
Ps 39:11Ps 39:11τὴν δικαιοσύνην σου οὐκ ἔκρυψα ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ μου τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου καὶ τὸ σωτήριόν σου εἶπα οὐκ ἔκρυψα τὸ ἔλεός σου καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου ἀπὸ συναγωγῆς πολλῆςPs 40:10
I have not hid thy truth within my heart, and I have declared thy salvation; I have not hid thy mercy and thy truth from the great congregation.
Ps 40:10
I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart.
I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation.
I have not concealed your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.
12Ps 40:1112אַתָּ֤ה יְהוָ֗ה לֹא־תִכְלָ֣א רַחֲמֶ֣יךָ מִמֶּ֑נִּי חַסְדְּךָ֥ וַ֝אֲמִתְּךָ֗ תָּמִ֥יד יִצְּרֽוּנִי׃Ps 40:11
Don’t withhold your tender mercies from me, Yahweh.
Let your loving kindness and your truth continually preserve me.
Ps 39:12Ps 39:12σὺ δέ κύριε μὴ μακρύνης τοὺς οἰκτιρμούς σου ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὸ ἔλεός σου καὶ ἡ ἀλήθειά σου διὰ παντὸς ἀντελάβοντό μουPs 40:11
But thou, Lord, remove not thy compassion far from me; thy mercy and thy truth have helped me continually.
Ps 40:11
Don’t withhold your tender mercies from me, Yahweh.
Let your loving kindness and your truth continually preserve me.
13Ps 40:1213כִּ֤י אָפְפ֥וּ־עָלַ֨י ׀ רָע֡וֹת עַד־אֵ֬ין מִסְפָּ֗ר הִשִּׂיג֣וּנִי עֲ֭וֹנֹתַי וְלֹא־יָכֹ֣לְתִּי לִרְא֑וֹת עָצְמ֥וּ מִשַּֽׂעֲר֥וֹת רֹ֝אשִׁ֗י וְלִבִּ֥י עֲזָבָֽנִי׃Ps 40:12
For innumerable evils have surrounded me.
My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up.
They are more than the hairs of my head.
My heart has failed me.
Ps 39:13Ps 39:13ὅτι περιέσχον με κακά ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός κατέλαβόν με αἱ ἀνομίαι μου καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθην τοῦ βλέπειν ἐπληθύνθησαν ὑπὲρ τὰς τρίχας τῆς κεφαλῆς μου καὶ ἡ καρδία μου ἐγκατέλιπέν μεPs 40:12
For innumerable evils have encompassed me; my transgressions have taken hold of me, and I could not see; they are multiplied more than the hairs of my head; and my heart has failed me.
Ps 40:12
For innumerable evils have surrounded me.
My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up.

14Ps 40:1314רְצֵ֣ה יְ֭הוָה לְהַצִּילֵ֑נִי יְ֝הוָ֗ה לְעֶזְרָ֥תִי חֽוּשָׁה׃Ps 40:13
Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me.
Hurry to help me, Yahweh.
Ps 39:14Ps 39:14εὐδόκησον κύριε τοῦ ῥύσασθαί με κύριε εἰς τὸ βοηθῆσαί μοι πρόσχεςPs 40:13
Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, draw nigh to help me.
Ps 40:13
Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me.
Hurry to help me, Yahweh.
15Ps 40:1415יֵ֘בֹ֤שׁוּ וְיַחְפְּר֨וּ ׀ יַחַד֮ מְבַקְשֵׁ֥י נַפְשִׁ֗י לִסְפּ֫וֹתָ֥הּ יִסֹּ֣גוּ אָ֭חוֹר וְיִכָּלְמ֑וּ חֲ֝פֵצֵ֗י רָעָתִֽי׃Ps 40:14
Let them be disappointed and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it.
Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt.
Ps 39:15Ps 39:15καταισχυνθείησαν καὶ ἐντραπείησαν ἅμα οἱ ζητοῦντες τὴν ψυχήν μου τοῦ ἐξᾶραι αὐτήν ἀποστραφείησαν εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ ἐντραπείησαν οἱ θέλοντές μοι κακάPs 40:14
Let those that seek my soul, to destroy it, be ashamed and confounded together; let those that wish me evil be turned backward and put to shame.
Ps 40:14
Let them be disappointed and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it.
Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt.
16Ps 40:1516יָ֭שֹׁמּוּ עַל־עֵ֣קֶב בָּשְׁתָּ֑ם הָאֹמְרִ֥ים לִ֝֗י הֶאָ֥ח ׀ הֶאָֽח׃Ps 40:15
Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, “Aha! Aha!”
Ps 39:16Ps 39:16κομισάσθωσαν παραχρῆμα αἰσχύνην αὐτῶν οἱ λέγοντές μοι εὖγε εὖγεPs 40:15
Let those that say to me, Aha, aha, quickly receive shame for their reward.
Ps 40:15
Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, “Aha! Aha!”
17Ps 40:1617יָ֘שִׂ֤ישׂוּ וְיִשְׂמְח֨וּ ׀ בְּךָ֗ כָּֽל־מְבַ֫קְשֶׁ֥יךָ יֹאמְר֣וּ תָ֭מִיד יִגְדַּ֣ל יְהוָ֑ה אֹֽ֝הֲבֵ֗י תְּשׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃Ps 40:16
Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.
Let such as love your salvation say continually, “Let Yahweh be exalted!”
Ps 39:17Ps 39:17ἀγαλλιάσαιντο καὶ εὐφρανθείησαν ἐπὶ σοὶ πάντες οἱ ζητοῦντές σε κύριε καὶ εἰπάτωσαν διὰ παντός μεγαλυνθήτω ὁ κύριος οἱ ἀγαπῶντες τὸ σωτήριόν σουPs 40:16
Let all those that seek thee, O Lord, exult and rejoice in thee; and let them that love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.
Ps 40:16
Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.
Let such as love your salvation say continually, “Let Yahweh be exalted!”
18Ps 40:1718וַאֲנִ֤י ׀ עָנִ֣י וְאֶבְיוֹן֮ אֲדֹנָ֪י יַחֲשָׁ֫ב לִ֥י עֶזְרָתִ֣י וּמְפַלְטִ֣י אַ֑תָּה אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י אַל־תְּאַחַֽר׃Ps 40:17
But I am poor and needy.
May the Lord think about me.
You are my help and my deliverer.
Don’t delay, my God.
Ps 39:18Ps 39:18ἐγὼ δὲ πτωχός εἰμι καὶ πένης κύριος φροντιεῖ μου βοηθός μου καὶ ὑπερασπιστής μου σὺ εἶ ὁ θεός μου μὴ χρονίσῃςPs 40:17
But I am poor and needy; the Lord will take care of me; thou art my helper, and my defender, O my God, delay not.
Ps 40:17
But I am poor and needy.
May the Lord think about me.
You are my help and my deliverer.
Don’t delay, my God.
