Ps 38:1Ps 38:1Gr. Psalm 38 (Heb. 39)
εἰς τὸ τέλος τῷ Ιδιθουν ᾠδὴ τῷ Δαυιδ
Ps 39:1
For the end, a Song of David, to Idithun. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I set a guard on my mouth, while the sinner stood in my presence.

2Ps 39:12אָמַ֗רְתִּי אֶֽשְׁמְרָ֣ה דְרָכַי֮ מֵחֲט֪וֹא בִלְשׁ֫וֹנִ֥י אֶשְׁמְרָ֥ה לְפִ֥י מַחְס֑וֹם בְּעֹ֖ד רָשָׁ֣ע לְנֶגְדִּֽי׃Ps 39:1
I said, “I will watch my ways, so that I don’t sin with my tongue.
I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before me.”
Ps 38:2Ps 38:2εἶπα φυλάξω τὰς ὁδούς μου τοῦ μὴ ἁμαρτάνειν ἐν γλώσσῃ μου ἐθέμην τῷ στόματί μου φυλακὴν ἐν τῷ συστῆναι τὸν ἁμαρτωλὸν ἐναντίον μου2
Ps 39:1
I said, “I will watch my ways, so that I don’t sin with my tongue.
I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before me.”
3Ps 39:23נֶאֱלַ֣מְתִּי ד֭וּמִיָּה הֶחֱשֵׁ֣יתִי מִטּ֑וֹב וּכְאֵבִ֥י נֶעְכָּֽר׃Ps 39:2
I was mute with silence.
I held my peace, even from good.
My sorrow was stirred.
Ps 38:3Ps 38:3ἐκωφώθην καὶ ἐταπεινώθην καὶ ἐσίγησα ἐξ ἀγαθῶν καὶ τὸ ἄλγημά μου ἀνεκαινίσθηPs 39:2
I was dumb, and humbled myself, and kept silence from good words; and my grief was renewed.
Ps 39:2
I was mute with silence.
I held my peace, even from good.
My sorrow was stirred.

4Ps 39:34חַם־לִבִּ֨י ׀ בְּקִרְבִּ֗י בַּהֲגִיגִ֥י תִבְעַר־אֵ֑שׁ דִּ֝בַּ֗רְתִּי בִּלְשֽׁוֹנִי׃Ps 39:3
My heart was hot within me.
While I meditated, the fire burned:
I spoke with my tongue:
Ps 38:4Ps 38:4ἐθερμάνθη ἡ καρδία μου ἐντός μου καὶ ἐν τῇ μελέτῃ μου ἐκκαυθήσεται πῦρ ἐλάλησα ἐν γλώσσῃ μουPs 39:3
My heart grew hot within me, and a fire would kindle in my meditation: I spoke with my tongue,

My heart was hot within me.
While I meditated, the fire burned:

5Ps 39:45הוֹדִ֘יעֵ֤נִי יְהוָ֨ה ׀ קִצִּ֗י וּמִדַּ֣ת יָמַ֣י מַה־הִ֑יא אֵ֝דְעָ֗ה מֶה־חָדֵ֥ל אָֽנִי׃Ps 39:4
“Yahweh, show me my end,
what is the measure of my days.
Let me know how frail I am.
Ps 38:5Ps 38:5γνώρισόν μοι κύριε τὸ πέρας μου καὶ τὸν ἀριθμὸν τῶν ἡμερῶν μου τίς ἐστιν ἵνα γνῶ τί ὑστερῶ ἐγώPs 39:4
O Lord, make me to know mine end, and the number of my days, what it is; that I may know what I lack.
Ps 39:4
“Yahweh, show me my end,
what is the measure of my days.
Let me know how frail I am.Make known to me Lord, my end and the number of my days, this, in order that I should know how I am lacking.

6Ps 39:56הִנֵּ֤ה טְפָח֨וֹת ׀ נָ֘תַ֤תָּה יָמַ֗י וְחֶלְדִּ֣י כְאַ֣יִן נֶגְדֶּ֑ךָ אַ֥ךְ כָּֽל־הֶ֥בֶל כָּל־אָ֝דָ֗ם נִצָּ֥ב סֶֽלָה׃Ps 39:5
Behold, you have made my days handbreadths.
My lifetime is as nothing before you.
Surely every man stands as a breath.”
Selah.
Ps 38:6Ps 38:6ἰδοὺ παλαιστὰς ἔθου τὰς ἡμέρας μου καὶ ἡ ὑπόστασίς μου ὡσεὶ οὐθὲν ἐνώπιόν σου πλὴν τὰ σύμπαντα ματαιότης πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ζῶν διάψαλμαPs 39:5
Behold, thou hast made my days old; and my existence is as nothing before thee: nay, every man living is altogether vanity. Pause.
Ps 39:5
Behold, you have made my days handbreadths.

Surely every man stands as a breath.”

7Ps 39:67אַךְ־בְּצֶ֤לֶם ׀ יִֽתְהַלֶּךְ־אִ֗ישׁ אַךְ־הֶ֥בֶל יֶהֱמָי֑וּן יִ֝צְבֹּ֗ר וְֽלֹא־יֵדַ֥ע מִי־אֹסְפָֽם׃Ps 39:6
“Surely every man walks like a shadow.
Surely they busy themselves in vain.
He heaps up, and doesn’t know who shall gather.
Ps 38:7Ps 38:7μέντοιγε ἐν εἰκόνι διαπορεύεται ἄνθρωπος πλὴν μάτην ταράσσονται θησαυρίζει καὶ οὐ γινώσκει τίνι συνάξει αὐτάPs 39:6
Surely man walks in a shadow; nay, he is disquieted in vain: he lays up treasures, and knows not for whom he shall gather them.
Ps 39:6
“Surely every man walks like a shadow.
Surely they busy themselves in vain.
He heaps up, and doesn’t know who shall gather.
8Ps 39:78וְעַתָּ֣ה מַה־קִּוִּ֣יתִי אֲדֹנָ֑י תּ֝וֹחַלְתִּ֗י לְךָ֣ הִֽיא׃Ps 39:7
Now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in you.
Ps 38:8Ps 38:8καὶ νῦν τίς ἡ ὑπομονή μου οὐχὶ ὁ κύριος καὶ ἡ ὑπόστασίς μου παρὰ σοῦ ἐστινPs 39:7
And now what is my expectation? is it not the Lord? and my ground of hope is with thee. Pause.
Ps 39:7
Now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in you.
9Ps 39:89מִכָּל־פְּשָׁעַ֥י הַצִּילֵ֑נִי חֶרְפַּ֥ת נָ֝בָ֗ל אַל־תְּשִׂימֵֽנִי׃Ps 39:8
Deliver me from all my transgressions.
Don’t make me the reproach of the foolish.
Ps 38:9Ps 38:9ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν ἀνομιῶν μου ῥῦσαί με ὄνειδος ἄφρονι ἔδωκάς μεPs 39:8
Deliver me from all my transgressions: thou hast made me a reproach to the foolish.
Ps 39:8
Deliver me from all my transgressions.
Don’t make me the reproach of the foolish.
10Ps 39:910נֶ֭אֱלַמְתִּי לֹ֣א אֶפְתַּח־פִּ֑י כִּ֖י אַתָּ֣ה עָשִֽׂיתָ׃Ps 39:9
I was mute.
I didn’t open my mouth,
because you did it.
Ps 38:10Ps 38:10ἐκωφώθην καὶ οὐκ ἤνοιξα τὸ στόμα μου ὅτι σὺ εἶ ὁ ποιήσας μεPs 39:9
I was dumb, and opened not my mouth; for thou art he that made me.
Ps 39:9
I was mute.
I didn’t open my mouth,
because you did it.
11Ps 39:1011הָסֵ֣ר מֵעָלַ֣י נִגְעֶ֑ךָ מִתִּגְרַ֥ת יָ֝דְךָ֗ אֲנִ֣י כָלִֽיתִי׃Ps 39:10
Remove your scourge away from me.
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
Ps 38:11Ps 38:11ἀπόστησον ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὰς μάστιγάς σου ἀπὸ τῆς ἰσχύος τῆς χειρός σου ἐγὼ ἐξέλιπονPs 39:10
Remove thy scourges from me: I have fainted by reason of the strength of thine hand.
Ps 39:10
Remove your scourge away from me.
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
12Ps 39:1112בְּֽתוֹכָ֘ח֤וֹת עַל־עָוֹ֨ן ׀ יִסַּ֬רְתָּ אִ֗ישׁ וַתֶּ֣מֶס כָּעָ֣שׁ חֲמוּד֑וֹ אַ֤ךְ הֶ֖בֶל כָּל־אָדָ֣ם סֶֽלָה׃Ps 39:11
When you rebuke and correct man for iniquity,
You consume his wealth like a moth.
Surely every man is but a breath.”
Selah.
Ps 38:12Ps 38:12ἐν ἐλεγμοῖς ὑπὲρ ἀνομίας ἐπαίδευσας ἄνθρωπον καὶ ἐξέτηξας ὡς ἀράχνην τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ πλὴν μάτην ταράσσεται πᾶς ἄνθρωπος διάψαλμαPs 39:11
Thou chastenest man with rebukes for iniquity, and thou makest his life to consume away like a spider's web; nay, every man is disquieted in vain. Pause.
Ps 39:11
When you rebuke and correct man for iniquity,
You consume his wealth like a moth.
Surely every man is but a breath.”

13Ps 39:1213שִֽׁמְעָ֥ה־תְפִלָּתִ֨י ׀ יְהוָ֡ה וְשַׁוְעָתִ֨י ׀ הַאֲזִינָה֮ אֶֽל־דִּמְעָתִ֗י אַֽל־תֶּ֫חֱרַ֥שׁ כִּ֤י גֵ֣ר אָנֹכִ֣י עִמָּ֑ךְ תּ֝וֹשָׁ֗ב כְּכָל־אֲבוֹתָֽי׃Ps 39:12
“Hear my prayer, Yahweh, and give ear to my cry.
Don’t be silent at my tears.
For I am a stranger with you,
a foreigner, as all my fathers were.
Ps 38:13Ps 38:13εἰσάκουσον τῆς προσευχῆς μου κύριε καὶ τῆς δεήσεώς μου ἐνώτισαι τῶν δακρύων μου μὴ παρασιωπήσῃς ὅτι πάροικος ἐγώ εἰμι παρὰ σοὶ καὶ παρεπίδημος καθὼς πάντες οἱ πατέρες μουPs 39:12
O Lord, hearken to my prayer and my supplication: attend to my tears: be not silent, for I am a sojourner in the land, and a stranger, as all my fathers were.
Ps 39:12
“Hear my prayer, Yahweh, and give ear to my cry.
Don’t be silent at my tears.
For I am a stranger with you,
a foreigner, as all my fathers were.
14Ps 39:1314הָשַׁ֣ע מִמֶּ֣נִּי וְאַבְלִ֑יגָה בְּטֶ֖רֶם אֵלֵ֣ךְ וְאֵינֶֽנִּי׃Ps 39:13
Oh spare me, that I may recover strength,
before I go away, and exist no more.”
Ps 38:14Ps 38:14ἄνες μοι ἵνα ἀναψύξω πρὸ τοῦ με ἀπελθεῖν καὶ οὐκέτι μὴ ὑπάρξωPs 39:13
Spare me, that I may be refreshed, before I depart, and be no more.
Ps 39:13
Oh spare me, that I may recover strength,
before I go away, and exist no more.”
