My son, if thou become surety for thy friend, thou shalt deliver thine hand to an enemy.

2Prv 6:22נוֹקַ֥שְׁתָּ בְאִמְרֵי־פִ֑יךָ נִ֝לְכַּ֗דְתָּ בְּאִמְרֵי־פִֽיךָ׃Prv 6:2
You are trapped by the words of your mouth.
You are ensnared with the words of your mouth.
Prv 6:2Prv 6:2παγὶς γὰρ ἰσχυρὰ ἀνδρὶ τὰ ἴδια χείλη καὶ ἁλίσκεται χείλεσιν ἰδίου στόματοςPrv 6:2
For a man's own lips become a strong snare to him, and he is caught with the lips of his own mouth.
Prv 6:2
You are trapped by the words of your mouth.

3Prv 6:33עֲשֵׂ֨ה זֹ֥את אֵפ֪וֹא ׀ בְּנִ֡י וְֽהִנָּצֵ֗ל כִּ֘י בָ֤אתָ בְכַף־רֵעֶ֑ךָ לֵ֥ךְ הִ֝תְרַפֵּ֗ס וּרְהַ֥ב רֵעֶֽיךָ׃Prv 6:3
Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself,
since you have come into the hand of your neighbor.
Go, humble yourself.
Press your plea with your neighbor.
Prv 6:3Prv 6:3ποίει υἱέ ἃ ἐγώ σοι ἐντέλλομαι καὶ σῴζου ἥκεις γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας κακῶν διὰ σὸν φίλον ἴθι μὴ ἐκλυόμενος παρόξυνε δὲ καὶ τὸν φίλον σου ὃν ἐνεγυήσωPrv 6:3
My son, do what I command thee, and deliver thyself; for on thy friend's account thou art come into the power of evil men: faint not, but stir up even thy friend for whom thou art become surety.
Prv 6:3
Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself,
since you have come into the hand of your neighbor.
Go, humble yourself.
Press your plea with your neighbor.
4Prv 6:44אַל־תִּתֵּ֣ן שֵׁנָ֣ה לְעֵינֶ֑יךָ וּ֝תְנוּמָ֗ה לְעַפְעַפֶּֽיךָ׃Prv 6:4
Give no sleep to your eyes,
nor slumber to your eyelids.

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber with thine eyelids;

5Prv 6:55הִ֭נָּצֵל כִּצְבִ֣י מִיָּ֑ד וּ֝כְצִפּ֗וֹר מִיַּ֥ד יָקֽוּשׁ׃ פ Prv 6:5
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Prv 6:5Prv 6:5ἵνα σῴζῃ ὥσπερ δορκὰς ἐκ βρόχων καὶ ὥσπερ ὄρνεον ἐκ παγίδοςPrv 6:5
that thou mayest deliver thyself as a doe out of the toils, and as a bird out of a snare.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; and see, and emulate his ways, and become wiser than he.
Prv 6:6
Go to the ant, you sluggard.
Consider her ways, and be wise;
7Prv 6:77אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֵֽין־לָ֥הּ קָצִ֗ין שֹׁטֵ֥ר וּמֹשֵֽׁל׃Prv 6:7
which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
Prv 6:7Prv 6:7ἐκείνῳ γὰρ γεωργίου μὴ ὑπάρχοντος μηδὲ τὸν ἀναγκάζοντα ἔχων μηδὲ ὑπὸ δεσπότην ὢνPrv 6:7
For whereas he has no husbandry, nor any one to compel him, and is under no master,
Prv 6:7
which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
8Prv 6:88תָּכִ֣ין בַּקַּ֣יִץ לַחְמָ֑הּ אָגְרָ֥ה בַ֝קָּצִ֗יר מַאֲכָלָֽהּ׃Prv 6:8
provides her bread in the summer,
and gathers her food in the harvest.
Prv 6:8Prv 6:8ἑτοιμάζεται θέρους τὴν τροφὴν πολλήν τε ἐν τῷ ἀμήτῳ ποιεῖται τὴν παράθεσινPrv 6:8
he prepares food for himself in the summer, and lays by abundant store in harvest. Or go to the bee, and learn how diligent she is, and how earnestly she is engaged in her work; whose labours kings and private men use for health, and she is desired and respected by all: though weak in body, she is advanced by honouring wisdom.

provides her bread in the summer,
and gathers her food in the harvest.
9Prv 6:99עַד־מָתַ֖י עָצֵ֥ל ׀ תִּשְׁכָּ֑ב מָ֝תַ֗י תָּק֥וּם מִשְּׁנָתֶֽךָ׃Prv 6:9
How long will you sleep, sluggard?
When will you arise out of your sleep?
Prv 6:9Prv 6:9ἕως τίνος ὀκνηρέ κατάκεισαι πότε δὲ ἐξ ὕπνου ἐγερθήσῃPrv 6:9
How long wilt thou lie, O sluggard? and when wilt thou awake out of sleep?

How long will you sleep, sluggard?
When will you arise out of your sleep?
10Prv 6:1010מְעַ֣ט שֵׁ֭נוֹת מְעַ֣ט תְּנוּמ֑וֹת מְעַ֓ט ׀ חִבֻּ֖ק יָדַ֣יִם לִשְׁכָּֽב׃Prv 6:10
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to sleep:
Prv 6:10Prv 6:10ὀλίγον μὲν ὑπνοῖς ὀλίγον δὲ κάθησαι μικρὸν δὲ νυστάζεις ὀλίγον δὲ ἐναγκαλίζῃ χερσὶν στήθηPrv 6:10
Thou sleepest a little, and thou restest a little, and thou slumberest a short time, and thou foldest thine arms over thy breast a little.
Prv 6:10
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11Prv 6:1111וּבָֽא־כִמְהַלֵּ֥ךְ רֵאשֶׁ֑ךָ וּ֝מַחְסֹֽרְךָ֗ כְּאִ֣ישׁ מָגֵֽן׃ פ Prv 6:11
so your poverty will come as a robber,
and your scarcity as an armed man.
Prv 6:11Prv 6:11εἶτ’ ἐμπαραγίνεταί σοι ὥσπερ κακὸς ὁδοιπόρος ἡ πενία καὶ ἡ ἔνδεια ὥσπερ ἀγαθὸς δρομεύςPrv 6:11
Then poverty comes upon thee as an evil traveller, and want as a swift courier: but if thou be diligent, thine harvest shall arrive as a fountain, and poverty shall flee away as a bad courier.
Prv 6:11
so your poverty will come as a robber,
and your scarcity as an armed man.
12Prv 6:1212אָדָ֣ם בְּ֭לִיַּעַל אִ֣ישׁ אָ֑וֶן ה֝וֹלֵ֗ךְ עִקְּשׁ֥וּת פֶּֽה׃Prv 6:12
A worthless person, a man of iniquity,
is he who walks with a perverse mouth;
Prv 6:12Prv 6:12ἀνὴρ ἄφρων καὶ παράνομος πορεύεται ὁδοὺς οὐκ ἀγαθάςPrv 6:12
A foolish man and a transgressor goes in ways that are not good.
Prv 6:12
A worthless person, a man of iniquity,

13Prv 6:1313קֹרֵ֣ץ בְּ֭עֵינָיו מֹלֵ֣ל בְּרַגְלָ֑ו מֹ֝רֶ֗ה בְּאֶצְבְּעֹתָֽיו׃Prv 6:13
who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet,
who motions with his fingers;
Prv 6:13Prv 6:13ὁ δ’ αὐτὸς ἐννεύει ὀφθαλμῷ σημαίνει δὲ ποδί διδάσκει δὲ ἐννεύμασιν δακτύλωνPrv 6:13
And the same winks with the eye, and makes a sign with his foot, and teaches with the beckonings of his fingers.
Prv 6:13
who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet,
who motions with his fingers;
14Prv 6:1414תַּֽהְפֻּכ֨וֹת ׀ בְּלִבּ֗וֹ חֹרֵ֣שׁ רָ֣ע בְּכָל־עֵ֑ת ‏{ מדנים מִדְיָנִ֥ים }‏ יְשַׁלֵּֽחַ׃

Prv 6:14
in whose heart is perverseness,
who devises evil continually,
who always sows discord.
Prv 6:14Prv 6:14διεστραμμένῃ δὲ καρδίᾳ τεκταίνεται κακὰ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ ὁ τοιοῦτος ταραχὰς συνίστησιν πόλειPrv 6:14
His perverse heart devises evils: at all times such a one causes troubles to a city.
Prv 6:14
in whose heart is perverseness,
who devises evil continually,
who always sows discord.
15Prv 6:1515עַל־כֵּ֗ן פִּ֭תְאֹם יָב֣וֹא אֵיד֑וֹ פֶּ֥תַע יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר וְאֵ֣ין מַרְפֵּֽא׃ פ Prv 6:15
Therefore his calamity will come suddenly.
He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.
Prv 6:15Prv 6:15διὰ τοῦτο ἐξαπίνης ἔρχεται ἡ ἀπώλεια αὐτοῦ διακοπὴ καὶ συντριβὴ ἀνίατοςPrv 6:15
Therefore his destruction shall come suddenly; overthrow and irretrievable ruin.
Prv 6:15
Therefore his calamity will come suddenly.

Prv 6:16
There are six things which Yahweh hates;
yes, seven which are an abomination to him:
Prv 6:16Prv 6:16ὅτι χαίρει πᾶσιν οἷς μισεῖ ὁ κύριος συντρίβεται δὲ δι’ ἀκαθαρσίαν ψυχῆςPrv 6:16
For he rejoices in all things which God hates, and he is ruined by reason of impurity of soul.

There are six things which Yahweh hates;

17Prv 6:1717עֵינַ֣יִם רָ֭מוֹת לְשׁ֣וֹן שָׁ֑קֶר וְ֝יָדַ֗יִם שֹׁפְכ֥וֹת דָּם־נָקִֽי׃Prv 6:17
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood;
Prv 6:17Prv 6:17ὀφθαλμὸς ὑβριστοῦ γλῶσσα ἄδικος χεῖρες ἐκχέουσαι αἷμα δικαίουPrv 6:17
The eye of the haughty, a tongue unjust, hands shedding the blood of the just;
Prv 6:17
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood;
18Prv 6:1818לֵ֗ב חֹ֭רֵשׁ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת אָ֑וֶן רַגְלַ֥יִם מְ֝מַהֲר֗וֹת לָר֥וּץ לָֽרָעָה׃Prv 6:18
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are swift in running to mischief,
Prv 6:18Prv 6:18καὶ καρδία τεκταινομένη λογισμοὺς κακοὺς καὶ πόδες ἐπισπεύδοντες κακοποιεῖνPrv 6:18
and a heart devising evil thoughts, and feet hastening to do evil, —are hateful to God.
Prv 6:18
a heart that devises wicked schemes,

19Prv 6:1919יָפִ֣יחַ כְּ֭זָבִים עֵ֣ד שָׁ֑קֶר וּמְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ מְ֝דָנִ֗ים בֵּ֣ין אַחִֽים׃ פ Prv 6:19
a false witness who utters lies,
and he who sows discord among brothers.
Prv 6:19Prv 6:19ἐκκαίει ψεύδη μάρτυς ἄδικος καὶ ἐπιπέμπει κρίσεις ἀνὰ μέσον ἀδελφῶνPrv 6:19
An unjust witness kindles falsehoods, and brings on quarrels between brethren.
Prv 6:19
a false witness who utters lies,
and he who sows discord among brothers.
20Prv 6:2020נְצֹ֣ר בְּ֭נִי מִצְוַ֣ת אָבִ֑יךָ וְאַל־תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ תּוֹרַ֥ת אִמֶּֽךָ׃Prv 6:20
My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.
Prv 6:20Prv 6:20υἱέ φύλασσε νόμους πατρός σου καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ θεσμοὺς μητρός σουPrv 6:20
My son, keep the laws of thy father, and reject not the ordinances of thy mother:
Prv 6:20
My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.
21Prv 6:2121קָשְׁרֵ֣ם עַל־לִבְּךָ֣ תָמִ֑יד עָ֝נְדֵ֗ם עַל־גַּרְגְּרֹתֶֽךָ׃Prv 6:21
Bind them continually on your heart.
Tie them around your neck.
Prv 6:21Prv 6:21ἄφαψαι δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ σῇ ψυχῇ διὰ παντὸς καὶ ἐγκλοίωσαι ἐπὶ σῷ τραχήλῳPrv 6:21
but bind them upon thy soul continually, and hang them as a chain about thy neck.
Prv 6:21
Bind them continually on your heart.
Tie them around your neck.
22Prv 6:2222בְּהִתְהַלֶּכְךָ֨ ׀ תַּנְחֶ֬ה אֹתָ֗ךְ בְּֽ֭שָׁכְבְּךָ תִּשְׁמֹ֣ר עָלֶ֑יךָ וַ֝הֲקִיצ֗וֹתָ הִ֣יא תְשִׂיחֶֽךָ׃Prv 6:22
When you walk, it will lead you.
When you sleep, it will watch over you.
When you awake, it will talk with you.
Prv 6:22Prv 6:22ἡνίκα ἂν περιπατῇς ἐπάγου αὐτήν καὶ μετὰ σοῦ ἔστω ὡς δ’ ἂν καθεύδῃς φυλασσέτω σε ἵνα ἐγειρομένῳ συλλαλῇ σοιPrv 6:22
Whensoever thou walkest, lead this along and let it be with thee; that it may talk with thee when thou wakest.
Prv 6:22
When you walk, it will lead you.
When you sleep, it will watch over you.
When you awake, it will talk with you.
23Prv 6:2323כִּ֤י נֵ֣ר מִ֭צְוָה וְת֣וֹרָה א֑וֹר וְדֶ֥רֶךְ חַ֝יִּ֗ים תּוֹכְח֥וֹת מוּסָֽר׃Prv 6:23
For the commandment is a lamp,
and the law is light.
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
Prv 6:23Prv 6:23ὅτι λύχνος ἐντολὴ νόμου καὶ φῶς καὶ ὁδὸς ζωῆς ἔλεγχος καὶ παιδείαPrv 6:23
For the commandment of the law is a lamp and a light; a way of life; reproof also and correction:
Prv 6:23
For the commandment is a lamp,
and the law is light.
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
24Prv 6:2424לִ֭שְׁמָרְךָ מֵאֵ֣שֶׁת רָ֑ע מֵֽ֝חֶלְקַ֗ת לָשׁ֥וֹן נָכְרִיָּֽה׃Prv 6:24
to keep you from the immoral woman,
from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.
Prv 6:24Prv 6:24τοῦ διαφυλάσσειν σε ἀπὸ γυναικὸς ὑπάνδρου καὶ ἀπὸ διαβολῆς γλώσσης ἀλλοτρίαςPrv 6:24
to keep thee continually from a married woman, and from the calumny of a strange tongue.
Prv 6:24
to keep you from the immoral woman,
from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.
25Prv 6:2525אַל־תַּחְמֹ֣ד יָ֭פְיָהּ בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ וְאַל־תִּ֝קָּֽחֲךָ֗ בְּעַפְעַפֶּֽיהָ׃Prv 6:25
Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart,
neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.
Prv 6:25Prv 6:25μή σε νικήσῃ κάλλους ἐπιθυμία μηδὲ ἀγρευθῇς σοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς μηδὲ συναρπασθῇς ἀπὸ τῶν αὐτῆς βλεφάρωνPrv 6:25
Let not the desire of beauty overcome thee, neither be thou caught by thine eyes, neither be captivated with her eyelids.
Prv 6:25
Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart,
neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.
26Prv 6:2626כִּ֤י בְעַד־אִשָּׁ֥ה זוֹנָ֗ה עַֽד־כִּכַּ֫ר לָ֥חֶם וְאֵ֥שֶׁת אִ֑ישׁ נֶ֖פֶשׁ יְקָרָ֣ה תָצֽוּד׃ פ Prv 6:26
For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread.
The adulteress hunts for your precious life.
Prv 6:26Prv 6:26τιμὴ γὰρ πόρνης ὅση καὶ ἑνὸς ἄρτου γυνὴ δὲ ἀνδρῶν τιμίας ψυχὰς ἀγρεύειPrv 6:26
For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf; and a woman hunts for the precious souls of men.
Prv 6:26
For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread.

27Prv 6:2727הֲיַחְתֶּ֤ה אִ֓ישׁ אֵ֬שׁ בְּחֵיק֑וֹ וּ֝בְגָדָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִשָּׂרַֽפְנָה׃Prv 6:27
Can a man scoop fire into his lap,
and his clothes not be burned?
Prv 6:27Prv 6:27ἀποδήσει τις πῦρ ἐν κόλπῳ τὰ δὲ ἱμάτια οὐ κατακαύσειPrv 6:27
Shall any one bind fire in his bosom, and not burn his garments?
Prv 6:27
Can a man scoop fire into his lap,
and his clothes not be burned?
28Prv 6:2828אִם־יְהַלֵּ֣ךְ אִ֭ישׁ עַל־הַגֶּחָלִ֑ים וְ֝רַגְלָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִכָּוֶֽינָה׃Prv 6:28
Or can one walk on hot coals,
and his feet not be scorched?
Prv 6:28Prv 6:28ἢ περιπατήσει τις ἐπ’ ἀνθράκων πυρός τοὺς δὲ πόδας οὐ κατακαύσειPrv 6:28
or will any one walk on coals of fire, and not burn his feet?
Prv 6:28
Or can one walk on hot coals,
and his feet not be scorched?
29Prv 6:2929כֵּ֗ן הַ֭בָּא אֶל־אֵ֣שֶׁת רֵעֵ֑הוּ לֹ֥א יִ֝נָּקֶ֗ה כָּֽל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּֽהּ׃Prv 6:29
So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife.
Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.
Prv 6:29Prv 6:29οὕτως ὁ εἰσελθὼν πρὸς γυναῖκα ὕπανδρον οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται οὐδὲ πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος αὐτῆςPrv 6:29
So is he that goes in to a married woman; he shall not be held guiltless, neither any one that touches her.
Prv 6:29
So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife.
Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.
30Prv 6:3030לֹא־יָב֣וּזוּ לַ֭גַּנָּב כִּ֣י יִגְנ֑וֹב לְמַלֵּ֥א נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ כִּ֣י יִרְעָֽב׃Prv 6:30
Men don’t despise a thief,
if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry:
Prv 6:30Prv 6:30οὐ θαυμαστὸν ἐὰν ἁλῷ τις κλέπτων κλέπτει γὰρ ἵνα ἐμπλήσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν πεινῶνPrv 6:30
It is not to be wondered at if one should be taken stealing, for he steals that when hungry he may satisfy his soul:
Prv 6:30
Men don’t despise a thief,
if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry:
31Prv 6:3131וְ֭נִמְצָא יְשַׁלֵּ֣ם שִׁבְעָתָ֑יִם אֶת־כָּל־ה֖וֹן בֵּית֣וֹ יִתֵּֽן׃Prv 6:31
but if he is found, he shall restore seven times.
He shall give all the wealth of his house.
Prv 6:31Prv 6:31ἐὰν δὲ ἁλῷ ἀποτείσει ἑπταπλάσια καὶ πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ δοὺς ῥύσεται ἑαυτόνPrv 6:31
but if he should be taken, he shall repay sevenfold, and shall deliver himself by giving all his goods.
Prv 6:31
but if he is found, he shall restore seven times.
He shall give all the wealth of his house.
32Prv 6:3232נֹאֵ֣ף אִשָּׁ֣ה חֲסַר־לֵ֑ב מַֽשְׁחִ֥ית נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ ה֣וּא יַעֲשֶֽׂנָּה׃Prv 6:32
He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding.
He who does it destroys his own soul.
Prv 6:32Prv 6:32ὁ δὲ μοιχὸς δι’ ἔνδειαν φρενῶν ἀπώλειαν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ περιποιεῖταιPrv 6:32
But the adulterer through want of sense procures destruction to his soul.
Prv 6:32
He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding.
He who does it destroys his own soul.
33Prv 6:3333נֶֽגַע־וְקָל֥וֹן יִמְצָ֑א וְ֝חֶרְפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א תִמָּחֶֽה׃Prv 6:33
He will get wounds and dishonor.
His reproach will not be wiped away.

He endures both pain and disgrace, and his reproach shall never be wiped off.

He will get wounds and dishonor.
His reproach will not be wiped away.
34Prv 6:3434כִּֽי־קִנְאָ֥ה חֲמַת־גָּ֑בֶר וְלֹֽא־יַ֝חְמ֗וֹל בְּי֣וֹם נָקָֽם׃Prv 6:34
For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband.
He won’t spare in the day of vengeance.

For the soul of her husband is full of jealousy: he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

He won’t regard any ransom,
neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.

He will not forego his enmity for any ransom: neither will he be reconciled for many gifts.
