Prv 26:2
Like a fluttering sparrow,
like a darting swallow,
so the undeserved curse doesn’t come to rest.

As birds and sparrows fly, so a curse shall not come upon any one without a cause.

a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the back of fools!

As a whip for a horse, and a goad for an ass, so is a rod for a simple nation.
Prv 26:3
A whip is for the horse,
a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the back of fools!
4Prv 26:44אַל־תַּ֣עַן כְּ֭סִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּ֑וֹ פֶּֽן־תִּשְׁוֶה־לּ֥וֹ גַם־אָֽתָּה׃Prv 26:4
Don’t answer a fool according to his folly,
lest you also be like him.

5Prv 26:55עֲנֵ֣ה כְ֭סִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּ֑וֹ פֶּן־יִהְיֶ֖ה חָכָ֣ם בְּעֵינָֽיו׃Prv 26:5
Answer a fool according to his folly,
lest he be wise in his own eyes.

Yet answer a fool according to his folly, lest he seem wise in his own conceit.

6Prv 26:66מְקַצֶּ֣ה רַ֭גְלַיִם חָמָ֣ס שֹׁתֶ֑ה שֹׁלֵ֖חַ דְּבָרִ֣ים בְּיַד־כְּסִֽיל׃Prv 26:6
One who sends a message by the hand of a fool
is cutting off feet and drinking violence.
Prv 26:6Prv 26:6ἐκ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ποδῶν ὄνειδος πίεται ὁ ἀποστείλας δι’ ἀγγέλου ἄφρονος λόγονPrv 26:6
He that sends a message by a foolish messenger procures for himself a reproach from his own ways.

One who sends a message by the hand of a fool
is cutting off feet and drinking violence.
7Prv 26:77דַּלְי֣וּ שֹׁ֭קַיִם מִפִּסֵּ֑חַ וּ֝מָשָׁ֗ל בְּפִ֣י כְסִילִֽים׃Prv 26:7
Like the legs of the lame that hang loose:
so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
Prv 26:7Prv 26:7ἀφελοῦ πορείαν σκελῶν καὶ παροιμίαν ἐκ στόματος ἀφρόνωνPrv 26:7
As well take away the motion of the legs, as transgression from the mouth of fools.

Like the legs of the lame that hang loose:

8Prv 26:88כִּצְר֣וֹר אֶ֭בֶן בְּמַרְגֵּמָ֑ה כֵּן־נוֹתֵ֖ן לִכְסִ֣יל כָּבֽוֹד׃Prv 26:8
As one who binds a stone in a sling,
so is he who gives honor to a fool.
Prv 26:8Prv 26:8ὃς ἀποδεσμεύει λίθον ἐν σφενδόνῃ ὅμοιός ἐστιν τῷ διδόντι ἄφρονι δόξανPrv 26:8
He that binds up a stone in a sling, is like one that gives glory to a fool.
Prv 26:8
As one who binds a stone in a sling,
so is he who gives honor to a fool.
9Prv 26:99ח֭וֹחַ עָלָ֣ה בְיַד־שִׁכּ֑וֹר וּ֝מָשָׁ֗ל בְּפִ֣י כְסִילִֽים׃Prv 26:9

so is he who hires a fool

11Prv 26:1111כְּ֭כֶלֶב שָׁ֣ב עַל־קֵא֑וֹ כְּ֝סִ֗יל שׁוֹנֶ֥ה בְאִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃Prv 26:11
As a dog that returns to his vomit,
so is a fool who repeats his folly.
Prv 26:11Prv 26:11ὥσπερ κύων ὅταν ἐπέλθῃ ἐπὶ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ ἔμετον καὶ μισητὸς γένηται οὕτως ἄφρων τῇ ἑαυτοῦ κακίᾳ ἀναστρέψας ἐπὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίανPrv 26:11
As when a dog goes to his own vomit, and becomes abominable, so is fool who returns in his wickedness to his own sin. [There is a shame that brings sin: and there is a shame that is glory and grace.]
Prv 26:11
As a dog that returns to his vomit,
so is a fool who repeats his folly.
12Prv 26:1212רָאִ֗יתָ אִ֭ישׁ חָכָ֣ם בְּעֵינָ֑יו תִּקְוָ֖ה לִכְסִ֣יל מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃Prv 26:12
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.

I have seen a man who seemed to himself to be wise; but a fool had more hope than he.
Prv 26:12
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
13Prv 26:1313אָמַ֣ר עָ֭צֵל שַׁ֣חַל בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ אֲ֝רִ֗י בֵּ֣ין הָרְחֹבֽוֹת׃Prv 26:13
The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road!
A fierce lion roams the streets!”
Prv 26:13Prv 26:13λέγει ὀκνηρὸς ἀποστελλόμενος εἰς ὁδόν λέων ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖςPrv 26:13
A sluggard when sent on a journey says, There is a lion in the ways, and there are murderers in the streets.
Prv 26:13
The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road!
A fierce lion roams the streets!”
14Prv 26:1414הַ֭דֶּלֶת תִּסּ֣וֹב עַל־צִירָ֑הּ וְ֝עָצֵ֗ל עַל־מִטָּתֽוֹ׃Prv 26:14
As the door turns on its hinges,
so does the sluggard on his bed.
Prv 26:14Prv 26:14ὥσπερ θύρα στρέφεται ἐπὶ τοῦ στρόφιγγος οὕτως ὀκνηρὸς ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης αὐτοῦPrv 26:14
As a door turns on the hinge, so does a sluggard on his bed.

As the door turns on its hinges,
so does the sluggard on his bed.
15Prv 26:1515טָ֘מַ֤ן עָצֵ֣ל יָ֭דוֹ בַּצַּלָּ֑חַת נִ֝לְאָ֗ה לַֽהֲשִׁיבָ֥הּ אֶל־פִּֽיו׃Prv 26:15
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish.
He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
Prv 26:15Prv 26:15κρύψας ὀκνηρὸς τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ αὐτοῦ οὐ δυνήσεται ἐπενεγκεῖν ἐπὶ τὸ στόμαPrv 26:15
A sluggard having hid his hand in his bosom, will not be able to bring it up to his mouth.
Prv 26:15
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish.
He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
16Prv 26:1616חָכָ֣ם עָצֵ֣ל בְּעֵינָ֑יו מִ֝שִּׁבְעָ֗ה מְשִׁ֣יבֵי טָֽעַם׃Prv 26:16
The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes
than seven men who answer with discretion.
Prv 26:16Prv 26:16σοφώτερος ἑαυτῷ ὀκνηρὸς φαίνεται τοῦ ἐν πλησμονῇ ἀποκομίζοντος ἀγγελίανPrv 26:16
A sluggard seems to himself wiser than one who most satisfactorily brings back a message.

The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes
than seven men who answer with discretion.
17Prv 26:1717מַחֲזִ֥יק בְּאָזְנֵי־כָ֑לֶב עֹבֵ֥ר מִ֝תְעַבֵּ֗ר עַל־רִ֥יב לֹּֽא־לֽוֹ׃Prv 26:17
Like one who grabs a dog’s ears
is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.
Prv 26:17Prv 26:17ὥσπερ ὁ κρατῶν κέρκου κυνός οὕτως ὁ προεστὼς ἀλλοτρίας κρίσεωςPrv 26:17
As he that lays hold of a dog's tail, so is he that makes himself the champion of another's cause.

Like one who grabs a dog’s ears
is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.
18Prv 26:1818כְּֽ֭מִתְלַהְלֵהַּ הַיֹּרֶ֥ה זִקִּ֗ים חִצִּ֥ים וָמָֽוֶת׃Prv 26:18
Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death,
Prv 26:18Prv 26:18ὥσπερ οἱ ἰώμενοι προβάλλουσιν λόγους εἰς ἀνθρώπους ὁ δὲ ἀπαντήσας τῷ λόγῳ πρῶτος ὑποσκελισθήσεταιPrv 26:18
As those who need correction put forth fair words to men, and he that first falls in with the proposal will be overthrown;

19Prv 26:1919כֵּֽן־אִ֭ישׁ רִמָּ֣ה אֶת־רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְ֝אָמַ֗ר הֲ‍ֽלֹא־מְשַׂחֵ֥ק אָֽנִי׃Prv 26:19
is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “Am I not joking?”
Prv 26:19Prv 26:19οὕτως πάντες οἱ ἐνεδρεύοντες τοὺς ἑαυτῶν φίλους ὅταν δὲ φωραθῶσιν λέγουσιν ὅτι παίζων ἔπραξαPrv 26:19
so are all that lay wait for their own friends, and when they are discovered, say, I did it in jest.
Prv 26:19
is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “Am I not joking?”
20Prv 26:2020בְּאֶ֣פֶס עֵ֭צִים תִּכְבֶּה־אֵ֑שׁ וּבְאֵ֥ין נִ֝רְגָּ֗ן יִשְׁתֹּ֥ק מָדֽוֹן׃Prv 26:20
For lack of wood a fire goes out.
Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.
Prv 26:20Prv 26:20ἐν πολλοῖς ξύλοις θάλλει πῦρ ὅπου δὲ οὐκ ἔστιν δίθυμος ἡσυχάζει μάχηPrv 26:20
With much wood fire increases; but where there is not a double-minded man, strife ceases.

For lack of wood a fire goes out.

Prv 26:21
As coals are to hot embers,
and wood to fire,
so is a contentious man to kindling strife.

A hearth for coals, and wood for fire; and railing man for the tumult of strife.
Prv 26:21
As coals are to hot embers,
and wood to fire,
so is a contentious man to kindling strife.
22Prv 26:2222דִּבְרֵ֣י נִ֭רְגָּן כְּמִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים וְ֝הֵ֗ם יָרְד֥וּ חַדְרֵי־בָֽטֶן׃Prv 26:22
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels,
they go down into the innermost parts.

The words of cunning knaves are soft; but they smite even to the inmost parts of the bowels.

(The) words of a whisperer jokesters[a] (are) as dainty morsels soft,

Like silver dross on an earthen vessel
are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart.

Silver dishonestly given is to be considered as a potsherd: smooth lips cover a grievous heart.

A malicious man disguises himself with his lips,

A weeping enemy promises all things with his lips, but in his heart he contrives deceit.
Prv 26:24
A malicious man disguises himself with his lips,
but he harbors evil in his heart.
25Prv 26:2525כִּֽי־יְחַנֵּ֣ן ק֭וֹלוֹ אַל־תַּֽאֲמֶן־בּ֑וֹ כִּ֤י שֶׁ֖בַע תּוֹעֵב֣וֹת בְּלִבּֽוֹ׃Prv 26:25
When his speech is charming, don’t believe him;
for there are seven abominations in his heart.
Prv 26:25Prv 26:25ἐάν σου δέηται ὁ ἐχθρὸς μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ μὴ πεισθῇς ἑπτὰ γάρ εἰσιν πονηρίαι ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦPrv 26:25
Though thine enemy intreat thee with a loud voice, consent not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it.
Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
Prv 26:27Prv 26:27ὁ ὀρύσσων βόθρον τῷ πλησίον ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς αὐτόν ὁ δὲ κυλίων λίθον ἐφ’ ἑαυτὸν κυλίειPrv 26:27
He that digs a pit for his neighbour shall fall into it: and he that rolls a stone, rolls it upon himself.
Prv 26:27
Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it.
Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
28Prv 26:2828לְֽשׁוֹן־שֶׁ֭קֶר יִשְׂנָ֣א דַכָּ֑יו וּפֶ֥ה חָ֝לָ֗ק יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה מִדְחֶֽה׃Prv 26:28
A lying tongue hates those it hurts;
and a flattering mouth works ruin.

A lying tongue hates the truth; and an unguarded mouth causes tumults.
