Prv 24:1
Don’t be envious of evil men;
neither desire to be with them:

My son, envy not bad men, nor desire to be with them.

Don’t be envious of evil men;

2Prv 24:22כִּי־שֹׁ֭ד יֶהְגֶּ֣ה לִבָּ֑ם וְ֝עָמָ֗ל שִׂפְתֵיהֶ֥ם תְּדַבֵּֽרְנָה׃Prv 24:2
for their hearts plot violence,
and their lips talk about mischief.

For their heart meditates falsehoods, and their lips speak mischiefs.

3Prv 24:33בְּ֭חָכְמָה יִבָּ֣נֶה בָּ֑יִת וּ֝בִתְבוּנָ֗ה יִתְכּוֹנָֽן׃Prv 24:3
Through wisdom a house is built;
by understanding it is established;
Prv 24:3Prv 24:3μετὰ σοφίας οἰκοδομεῖται οἶκος καὶ μετὰ συνέσεως ἀνορθοῦταιPrv 24:3
A house is built by wisdom, and is set up by understanding.
Prv 24:3
Through wisdom a house is built;
by understanding it is established;
4Prv 24:44וּ֭בְדַעַת חֲדָרִ֣ים יִמָּלְא֑וּ כָּל־ה֖וֹן יָקָ֣ר וְנָעִֽים׃Prv 24:4
by knowledge the rooms are filled
with all rare and beautiful treasure.
Prv 24:4Prv 24:4μετὰ αἰσθήσεως ἐμπίμπλαται ταμίεια ἐκ παντὸς πλούτου τιμίου καὶ καλοῦPrv 24:4
By discretion the chambers are filled with all precious and excellent wealth.

5Prv 24:55גֶּֽבֶר־חָכָ֥ם בַּע֑וֹז וְאִֽישׁ־דַּ֝֗עַת מְאַמֶּץ־כֹּֽחַ׃Prv 24:5
A wise man has great power;
and a knowledgeable man increases strength;
Prv 24:5Prv 24:5κρείσσων σοφὸς ἰσχυροῦ καὶ ἀνὴρ φρόνησιν ἔχων γεωργίου μεγάλουPrv 24:5
A wise man is better than a strong man; and a man who has prudence than a large estate.
Prv 24:5
A wise man has great power;
and a knowledgeable man increases strength;
6Prv 24:66כִּ֣י בְ֭תַחְבֻּלוֹת תַּעֲשֶׂה־לְּךָ֣ מִלְחָמָ֑ה וּ֝תְשׁוּעָ֗ה בְּרֹ֣ב יוֹעֵֽץ׃Prv 24:6
for by wise guidance you wage your war;
and victory is in many advisors.
Prv 24:6Prv 24:6μετὰ κυβερνήσεως γίνεται πόλεμος βοήθεια δὲ μετὰ καρδίας βουλευτικῆςPrv 24:6
War is carried on with generalship, and aid is supplied to the heart of a counsellor.
Prv 24:6
for by wise guidance you wage your war;
and victory is in many advisors.
7Prv 24:77רָאמ֣וֹת לֶֽאֱוִ֣יל חָכְמ֑וֹת בַּ֝שַּׁ֗עַר לֹ֣א יִפְתַּח־פִּֽיהוּ׃Prv 24:7
Wisdom is too high for a fool:
he doesn’t open his mouth in the gate.
Prv 24:7Prv 24:7σοφία καὶ ἔννοια ἀγαθὴ ἐν πύλαις σοφῶν σοφοὶ οὐκ ἐκκλίνουσιν ἐκ στόματος κυρίουPrv 24:7
Wisdom and good understanding are in the gates of the wise: the wise turn not aside from the mouth of the Lord,

Wisdom is too high for a fool:
he doesn’t open his mouth in the gate.
8Prv 24:88מְחַשֵּׁ֥ב לְהָרֵ֑עַ ל֝֗וֹ בַּֽעַל־מְזִמּ֥וֹת יִקְרָֽאוּ׃Prv 24:8
One who plots to do evil
will be called a schemer.
Prv 24:8Prv 24:8ἀλλὰ λογίζονται ἐν συνεδρίοις ἀπαιδεύτοις συναντᾷ θάνατοςPrv 24:8
but deliberate in council. Death befalls uninstructed men.

9Prv 24:99זִמַּ֣ת אִוֶּ֣לֶת חַטָּ֑את וְתוֹעֲבַ֖ת לְאָדָ֣ם לֵֽץ׃Prv 24:9
The schemes of folly are sin.
The mocker is detested by men.
Prv 24:9Prv 24:9ἀποθνῄσκει δὲ ἄφρων ἐν ἁμαρτίαις ἀκαθαρσία δὲ ἀνδρὶ λοιμῷ ἐμμολυνθήσεταιPrv 24:9
The fools also dies in sins; and uncleanness attaches to a pestilent man.

10Prv 24:1010הִ֭תְרַפִּיתָ בְּי֥וֹם צָרָ֗ה צַ֣ר כֹּחֶֽכָה׃Prv 24:10
If you falter in the time of trouble,
your strength is small.
Prv 24:10Prv 24:10ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῇ καὶ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως ἕως ἂν ἐκλίπῃPrv 24:10
He shall be defiled in the evil day, and in the day of affliction, until he be utterly consumed.

If you falter in the time of trouble,

11Prv 24:1111הַ֭צֵּל לְקֻחִ֣ים לַמָּ֑וֶת וּמָטִ֥ים לַ֝הֶ֗רֶג אִם־תַּחְשֽׂוֹךְ׃Prv 24:11
Rescue those who are being led away to death!
Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter!

Deliver them that are led away to death, and redeem them that are appointed to be slain; spare not thy help.

Rescue those who are being led away to death!
Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter!
12Prv 24:1212כִּֽי־תֹאמַ֗ר הֵן֮ לֹא־יָדַ֪עְנ֫וּ זֶ֥ה הֲ‍ֽלֹא־תֹ֘כֵ֤ן לִבּ֨וֹת ׀ הֽוּא־יָבִ֗ין וְנֹצֵ֣ר נַ֭פְשְׁךָ ה֣וּא יֵדָ֑ע וְהֵשִׁ֖יב לְאָדָ֣ם כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ׃Prv 24:12
If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this;”
doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it?
He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it?
Shall he not render to every man according to his work?
Prv 24:12Prv 24:12ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃς οὐκ οἶδα τοῦτον γίνωσκε ὅτι κύριος καρδίας πάντων γινώσκει καὶ ὁ πλάσας πνοὴν πᾶσιν αὐτὸς οἶδεν πάντα ὃς ἀποδίδωσιν ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦPrv 24:12
But if thou shouldest say, I know not this man; know that the Lord knows the hearts of all; and he that formed breath for all, he knows all things, who renders to every man according to his works.
Prv 24:12
If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this;”

13Prv 24:1313אֱכָל־בְּנִ֣י דְבַ֣שׁ כִּי־ט֑וֹב וְנֹ֥פֶת מָ֝ת֗וֹק עַל־חִכֶּֽךָ׃Prv 24:13
My son, eat honey, for it is good;
the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to your taste:
Prv 24:13Prv 24:13φάγε μέλι υἱέ ἀγαθὸν γὰρ κηρίον ἵνα γλυκανθῇ σου ὁ φάρυγξPrv 24:13
My son, eat honey, for the honeycomb is good, that thy throat may be sweetened.

My son, eat honey, for it is good;
the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to your taste:
14Prv 24:1414כֵּ֤ן ׀ דְּעֶ֥ה חָכְמָ֗ה לְנַ֫פְשֶׁ֥ךָ אִם־מָ֭צָאתָ וְיֵ֣שׁ אַחֲרִ֑ית וְ֝תִקְוָתְךָ֗ לֹ֣א תִכָּרֵֽת׃ פ Prv 24:14
so you shall know wisdom to be to your soul;
if you have found it, then there will be a reward,
your hope will not be cut off.
Prv 24:14Prv 24:14οὕτως αἰσθήσῃ σοφίαν τῇ σῇ ψυχῇ ἐὰν γὰρ εὕρῃς ἔσται καλὴ ἡ τελευτή σου καὶ ἐλπίς σε οὐκ ἐγκαταλείψειPrv 24:14
Thus shalt thou perceive wisdom in thy soul: for if thou find it, thine end shall be good, and hope shall not fail thee.
Prv 24:14
so you shall know wisdom to be to your soul;
if you have found it, then there will be a reward,
your hope will not be cut off.
15Prv 24:1515אַל־תֶּאֱרֹ֣ב רָ֭שָׁע לִנְוֵ֣ה צַדִּ֑יק אַֽל־תְּשַׁדֵּ֥ד רִבְצֽוֹ׃Prv 24:15
Don’t lay in wait, wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous.
Don’t destroy his resting place:
Prv 24:15Prv 24:15μὴ προσαγάγῃς ἀσεβῆ νομῇ δικαίων μηδὲ ἀπατηθῇς χορτασίᾳ κοιλίαςPrv 24:15
Bring not an ungodly man into the dwelling of the righteous: neither be deceived by the feeding of the belly.

Don’t lay in wait, wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous.

16Prv 24:1616כִּ֤י שֶׁ֨בַע ׀ יִפּ֣וֹל צַדִּ֣יק וָקָ֑ם וּ֝רְשָׁעִ֗ים יִכָּשְׁל֥וּ בְרָעָֽה׃Prv 24:16

but the wicked are overthrown by calamity.
Prv 24:16Prv 24:16ἑπτάκι γὰρ πεσεῖται ὁ δίκαιος καὶ ἀναστήσεται οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ἀσθενήσουσιν ἐν κακοῖςPrv 24:16
For a righteous man will fall seven times, and rise again: but the ungodly shall be without strength in troubles.

for a righteous man falls seven times, and rises up again;
but the wicked are overthrown by calamity.
17Prv 24:1717בִּנְפֹ֣ל ‏{ אויביך אֽ֭וֹיִבְךָ }‏ אַל־תִּשְׂמָ֑ח וּ֝בִכָּשְׁל֗וֹ אַל־יָגֵ֥ל לִבֶּֽךָ׃

Prv 24:17
Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls.
Don’t let your heart be glad when he is overthrown;
Prv 24:17Prv 24:17ἐὰν πέσῃ ὁ ἐχθρός σου μὴ ἐπιχαρῇς αὐτῷ ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑποσκελίσματι αὐτοῦ μὴ ἐπαίρουPrv 24:17
If thine enemy should fall, rejoice not over him, neither be elated at his overthrow.
Prv 24:17
Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls.
Don’t let your heart be glad when he is overthrown;
18Prv 24:1818פֶּן־יִרְאֶ֣ה יְ֭הוָה וְרַ֣ע בְּעֵינָ֑יו וְהֵשִׁ֖יב מֵעָלָ֣יו אַפּֽוֹ׃Prv 24:18
lest Yahweh see it, and it displease him,
and he turn away his wrath from him.
Prv 24:18Prv 24:18ὅτι ὄψεται κύριος καὶ οὐκ ἀρέσει αὐτῷ καὶ ἀποστρέψει τὸν θυμὸν αὐτοῦ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦPrv 24:18
For the Lord will see it, and it will not please him, and he will turn away his wrath from him.

lest Yahweh see it, and it displease him,

19Prv 24:1919אַל־תִּתְחַ֥ר בַּמְּרֵעִ֑ים אַל־תְּ֝קַנֵּ֗א בָּרְשָׁעִֽים׃Prv 24:19
Don’t fret yourself because of evildoers;
neither be envious of the wicked:
Prv 24:19Prv 24:19μὴ χαῖρε ἐπὶ κακοποιοῖς μηδὲ ζήλου ἁμαρτωλούςPrv 24:19
Rejoice not in evil-doers, neither be envious of sinners.

Don’t fret yourself because of evildoers;
neither be envious of the wicked:
20Prv 24:2020כִּ֤י ׀ לֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֣ה אַחֲרִ֣ית לָרָ֑ע נֵ֖ר רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִדְעָֽךְ׃Prv 24:20
for there will be no reward to the evil man;
and the lamp of the wicked shall be snuffed out.
Prv 24:20Prv 24:20οὐ γὰρ μὴ γένηται ἔκγονα πονηρῶν λαμπτὴρ δὲ ἀσεβῶν σβεσθήσεταιPrv 24:20
For the evil man shall have no posterity: and the light of the wicked shall be put out.
Prv 24:20
for there will be no reward to the evil man;
and the lamp of the wicked shall be snuffed out.
21Prv 24:2121יְרָֽא־אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה בְּנִ֣י וָמֶ֑לֶךְ עִם־שׁ֝וֹנִ֗ים אַל־תִּתְעָרָֽב׃Prv 24:21
My son, fear Yahweh and the king.
Don’t join those who are rebellious:
Prv 24:21Prv 24:21φοβοῦ τὸν θεόν υἱέ καὶ βασιλέα καὶ μηθετέρῳ αὐτῶν ἀπειθήσῃςPrv 24:21
My son, fear God and the king; and do not disobey either of them.
Prv 24:21
My son, fear Yahweh and the king.
Don’t join those who are rebellious:
22Prv 24:2222כִּֽי־פִ֭תְאֹם יָק֣וּם אֵידָ֑ם וּפִ֥יד שְׁ֝נֵיהֶ֗ם מִ֣י יוֹדֵֽעַ׃ ס Prv 24:22
for their calamity will rise suddenly;
the destruction from them both—who knows?
Prv 24:22Prv 24:22ἐξαίφνης γὰρ τείσονται τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς τὰς δὲ τιμωρίας ἀμφοτέρων τίς γνώσεταιPrv 24:22
For they will suddenly punish the ungodly, and who can know the vengeance inflicted by both? [A son that keeps the commandment shall escape destruction; for such an one has fully received it. Let no falsehood be spoken by the king from the tongue; yea, let no falsehood proceed from his tongue. The king's tongue is a sword, and not one of flesh; and whosoever shall be given up to it shall be destroyed: for if his wrath should be provoked, he destroys men with cords, and devours men's bones, and burns them up as a flame, so that they are not even fit to be eaten by the young eagles. My son, reverence my words, and receive them, and repent.]
Prv 24:22

¶These also are sayings of the wise.
To show partiality in judgment is not good.

Prv 24:23
And this thing I say to you that are wise for you to learn: It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

He that says of the ungodly, He is righteous, shall be cursed by peoples, and hateful among the nations.

He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous;”
peoples shall curse him, and nations shall abhor him—
25Prv 24:2525וְלַמּוֹכִיחִ֥ים יִנְעָ֑ם וַֽ֝עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם תָּב֥וֹא בִרְכַּת־טֽוֹב׃Prv 24:25
but it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and a rich blessing will come on them.
Prv 24:25Prv 24:25οἱ δὲ ἐλέγχοντες βελτίους φανοῦνται ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς δὲ ἥξει εὐλογία ἀγαθήPrv 24:25
But they that reprove him shall appear more excellent, and blessing shall come upon them;
Prv 24:25
but it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and a rich blessing will come on them.
26Prv 24:2626שְׂפָתַ֥יִם יִשָּׁ֑ק מֵ֝שִׁ֗יב דְּבָרִ֥ים נְכֹחִֽים׃Prv 24:26
An honest answer
is like a kiss on the lips.
Prv 24:26Prv 24:26χείλη δὲ φιλήσουσιν ἀποκρινόμενα λόγους ἀγαθούςPrv 24:26
and men will kiss lips that answer well.

27Prv 24:2727הָ֘כֵ֤ן בַּח֨וּץ ׀ מְלַאכְתֶּ֗ךָ וְעַתְּדָ֣הּ בַּשָּׂדֶ֣ה לָ֑ךְ אַ֝חַ֗ר וּבָנִ֥יתָ בֵיתֶֽךָ׃ פ Prv 24:27
Prepare your work outside,
and get your fields ready.
Afterwards, build your house.
Prv 24:27Prv 24:27ἑτοίμαζε εἰς τὴν ἔξοδον τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ παρασκευάζου εἰς τὸν ἀγρὸν καὶ πορεύου κατόπισθέν μου καὶ ἀνοικοδομήσεις τὸν οἶκόν σουPrv 24:27
Prepare thy works for thy going forth, and prepare thyself for the field; and come after me, and thou shalt rebuild thine house.

Prepare your work outside,

28Prv 24:2828אַל־תְּהִ֣י עֵד־חִנָּ֣ם בְּרֵעֶ֑ךָ וַ֝הֲפִתִּ֗יתָ בִּשְׂפָתֶֽיךָ׃Prv 24:28
Don’t be a witness against your neighbor without cause.
Don’t deceive with your lips.
Prv 24:28Prv 24:28μὴ ἴσθι ψευδὴς μάρτυς ἐπὶ σὸν πολίτην μηδὲ πλατύνου σοῖς χείλεσινPrv 24:28
Be not a false witness against thy fellow citizen, neither exaggerate with thy lips.

Don’t be a witness against your neighbor without cause.
Don’t deceive with your lips.
29Prv 24:2929אַל־תֹּאמַ֗ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָֽשָׂה־לִ֭י כֵּ֤ן אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לּ֑וֹ אָשִׁ֖יב לָאִ֣ישׁ כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ׃Prv 24:29
Don’t say, “I will do to him as he has done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work.”
Prv 24:29Prv 24:29μὴ εἴπῃς ὃν τρόπον ἐχρήσατό μοι χρήσομαι αὐτῷ τείσομαι δὲ αὐτὸν ἅ με ἠδίκησενPrv 24:29
Say not, As he has treated me, so will I treat him, and I will avenge myself on him for that wherein he has injured me.

Don’t say, “I will do to him as he has done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work.”
30Prv 24:3030עַל־שְׂדֵ֣ה אִישׁ־עָצֵ֣ל עָבַ֑רְתִּי וְעַל־כֶּ֝֗רֶם אָדָ֥ם חֲסַר־לֵֽב׃Prv 24:30
I went by the field of the sluggard,
by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
Prv 24:30Prv 24:30ὥσπερ γεώργιον ἀνὴρ ἄφρων καὶ ὥσπερ ἀμπελὼν ἄνθρωπος ἐνδεὴς φρενῶνPrv 24:30
A foolish man is like a farm, and a senseless man is like a vineyard.
Prv 24:30
I went by the field of the sluggard,
by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
31Prv 24:3131וְהִנֵּ֨ה עָ֘לָ֤ה כֻלּ֨וֹ ׀ קִמְּשֹׂנִ֗ים כָּסּ֣וּ פָנָ֣יו חֲרֻלִּ֑ים וְגֶ֖דֶר אֲבָנָ֣יו נֶהֱרָֽסָה׃Prv 24:31
Behold, it was all grown over with thorns.
Its surface was covered with nettles,
and its stone wall was broken down.
Prv 24:31Prv 24:31ἐὰν ἀφῇς αὐτόν χερσωθήσεται καὶ χορτομανήσει ὅλος καὶ γίνεται ἐκλελειμμένος οἱ δὲ φραγμοὶ τῶν λίθων αὐτοῦ κατασκάπτονταιPrv 24:31
If thou let him alone, he will altogether remain barren and covered with weeds; and he becomes destitute, and his stone walls are broken down.
Prv 24:31

Then I saw, and considered well.
I saw, and received instruction:

Afterwards I reflected, I looked that I might receive instruction.

Then I saw, and considered well.
I saw, and received instruction:
33Prv 24:3333מְעַ֣ט שֵׁ֭נוֹת מְעַ֣ט תְּנוּמ֑וֹת מְעַ֓ט ׀ חִבֻּ֖ק יָדַ֣יִם לִשְׁכָּֽב׃Prv 24:33
a little sleep, a little slumber,
