When you sit to eat with a ruler,
consider diligently what is before you;

If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee:

When you sit to eat with a ruler,
consider diligently what is before you;
2Prv 23:22וְשַׂמְתָּ֣ שַׂכִּ֣ין בְּלֹעֶ֑ךָ אִם־בַּ֖עַל נֶ֣פֶשׁ אָֽתָּה׃Prv 23:2
put a knife to your throat,
if you are a man given to appetite.
Prv 23:2Prv 23:2καὶ ἐπίβαλλε τὴν χεῖρά σου εἰδὼς ὅτι τοιαῦτά σε δεῖ παρασκευάσαιPrv 23:2
and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such meats: but if thou art very insatiable,

put a knife to your throat,
if you are a man given to appetite.
3Prv 23:33אַל־תִּ֭תְאָו לְמַטְעַמּוֹתָ֑יו וְ֝ה֗וּא לֶ֣חֶם כְּזָבִֽים׃Prv 23:3
Don’t be desirous of his dainties,
since they are deceitful food.
Prv 23:3Prv 23:3εἰ δὲ ἀπληστότερος εἶ μὴ ἐπιθύμει τῶν ἐδεσμάτων αὐτοῦ ταῦτα γὰρ ἔχεται ζωῆς ψευδοῦςPrv 23:3
desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life.
Prv 23:3
Don’t be desirous of his dainties,
since they are deceitful food.
4Prv 23:44אַל־תִּיגַ֥ע לְֽהַעֲשִׁ֑יר מִֽבִּינָתְךָ֥ חֲדָֽל׃Prv 23:4
Don’t weary yourself to be rich.
In your wisdom, show restraint.
Prv 23:4Prv 23:4μὴ παρεκτείνου πένης ὢν πλουσίῳ τῇ δὲ σῇ ἐννοίᾳ ἀπόσχουPrv 23:4
If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom.

Don’t weary yourself to be rich.
In your wisdom, show restraint.

Prv 23:5
Why do you set your eyes on that which is not?
For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.
Prv 23:5Prv 23:5ἐὰν ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτόν οὐδαμοῦ φανεῖται κατεσκεύασται γὰρ αὐτῷ πτέρυγες ὥσπερ ἀετοῦ καὶ ὑποστρέφει εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ προεστηκότος αὐτοῦPrv 23:5
If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master.

Why do you set your eyes on that which is not?

Prv 23:6
Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye,
and don’t crave his delicacies:
Prv 23:6Prv 23:6μὴ συνδείπνει ἀνδρὶ βασκάνῳ μηδὲ ἐπιθύμει τῶν βρωμάτων αὐτοῦPrv 23:6
Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats:

Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye,
and don’t crave his delicacies:
7Prv 23:77כִּ֤י ׀ כְּמוֹ־שָׁעַ֥ר בְּנַפְשׁ֗וֹ כֶּ֫ן־ה֥וּא אֱכֹ֣ל וּ֭שְׁתֵה יֹ֣אמַר לָ֑ךְ וְ֝לִבּ֗וֹ בַּל־עִמָּֽךְ׃Prv 23:7
for as he thinks about the cost, so he is.
“Eat and drink!” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
Prv 23:7Prv 23:7ὃν τρόπον γὰρ εἴ τις καταπίοι τρίχα οὕτως ἐσθίει καὶ πίνειPrv 23:7
so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him:

for as he thinks about the cost, so he is.
“Eat and drink!” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8Prv 23:88פִּֽתְּךָ־אָכַ֥לְתָּ תְקִיאֶ֑נָּה וְ֝שִׁחַ֗תָּ דְּבָרֶ֥יךָ הַנְּעִימִֽים׃Prv 23:8
The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up,
and lose your good words.
Prv 23:8Prv 23:8μηδὲ πρὸς σὲ εἰσαγάγῃς αὐτὸν καὶ φάγῃς τὸν ψωμόν σου μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐξεμέσει γὰρ αὐτὸν καὶ λυμανεῖται τοὺς λόγους σου τοὺς καλούςPrv 23:8
for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words.
Prv 23:8
The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up,
and lose your good words.
9Prv 23:99בְּאָזְנֵ֣י כְ֭סִיל אַל־תְּדַבֵּ֑ר כִּֽי־יָ֝ב֗וּז לְשֵׂ֣כֶל מִלֶּֽיךָ׃Prv 23:9
Don’t speak in the ears of a fool,
for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
Prv 23:9Prv 23:9εἰς ὦτα ἄφρονος μηδὲν λέγε μήποτε μυκτηρίσῃ τοὺς συνετοὺς λόγους σουPrv 23:9
Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words.

Don’t speak in the ears of a fool,
for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10Prv 23:1010אַל־תַּ֭סֵּג גְּב֣וּל עוֹלָ֑ם וּבִשְׂדֵ֥י יְ֝תוֹמִ֗ים אַל־תָּבֹֽא׃Prv 23:10
Don’t move the ancient boundary stone.
Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless:
Prv 23:10Prv 23:10μὴ μεταθῇς ὅρια αἰώνια εἰς δὲ κτῆμα ὀρφανῶν μὴ εἰσέλθῃςPrv 23:10
Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:

Don’t move the ancient boundary stone.

11Prv 23:1111כִּֽי־גֹאֲלָ֥ם חָזָ֑ק הֽוּא־יָרִ֖יב אֶת־רִיבָ֣ם אִתָּֽךְ׃Prv 23:11
for their Defender is strong.
He will plead their case against you.
Prv 23:11Prv 23:11ὁ γὰρ λυτρούμενος αὐτοὺς κύριος κραταιός ἐστιν καὶ κρινεῖ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτῶν μετὰ σοῦPrv 23:11
for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.
Prv 23:11
for their Defender is strong.
He will plead their case against you.
12Prv 23:1212הָבִ֣יאָה לַמּוּסָ֣ר לִבֶּ֑ךָ וְ֝אָזְנֶ֗ךָ לְאִמְרֵי־דָֽעַת׃Prv 23:12
Apply your heart to instruction,
and your ears to the words of knowledge.
Prv 23:12Prv 23:12δὸς εἰς παιδείαν τὴν καρδίαν σου τὰ δὲ ὦτά σου ἑτοίμασον λόγοις αἰσθήσεωςPrv 23:12
Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion.
Prv 23:12
Apply your heart to instruction,
and your ears to the words of knowledge.
13Prv 23:1313אַל־תִּמְנַ֣ע מִנַּ֣עַר מוּסָ֑ר כִּֽי־תַכֶּ֥נּוּ בַ֝שֵּׁ֗בֶט לֹ֣א יָמֽוּת׃Prv 23:13
Don’t withhold correction from a child.
If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
Prv 23:13Prv 23:13μὴ ἀπόσχῃ νήπιον παιδεύειν ὅτι ἐὰν πατάξῃς αὐτὸν ῥάβδῳ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃPrv 23:13
Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
Prv 23:13
Don’t withhold correction from a child.
If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
14Prv 23:1414אַ֭תָּה בַּשֵּׁ֣בֶט תַּכֶּ֑נּוּ וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ מִשְּׁא֥וֹל תַּצִּֽיל׃Prv 23:14
Punish him with the rod,
and save his soul from Sheol.
Prv 23:14Prv 23:14σὺ μὲν γὰρ πατάξεις αὐτὸν ῥάβδῳ τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐκ θανάτου ῥύσῃPrv 23:14
For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death.
Prv 23:14
Punish him with the rod,
and save his soul from Sheol.
15Prv 23:1515בְּ֭נִי אִם־חָכַ֣ם לִבֶּ֑ךָ יִשְׂמַ֖ח לִבִּ֣י גַם־אָֽנִי׃Prv 23:15
My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad, even mine:
Prv 23:15Prv 23:15υἱέ ἐὰν σοφὴ γένηταί σου ἡ καρδία εὐφρανεῖς καὶ τὴν ἐμὴν καρδίανPrv 23:15
Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart;
Prv 23:15
My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad, even mine:
16Prv 23:1616וְתַעְלֹ֥זְנָה כִלְיוֹתָ֑י בְּדַבֵּ֥ר שְׂ֝פָתֶ֗יךָ מֵישָׁרִֽים׃Prv 23:16
yes, my heart will rejoice,
when your lips speak what is right.
Prv 23:16Prv 23:16καὶ ἐνδιατρίψει λόγοις τὰ σὰ χείλη πρὸς τὰ ἐμὰ χείλη ἐὰν ὀρθὰ ὦσινPrv 23:16
and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right.
Prv 23:16
yes, my heart will rejoice,
when your lips speak what is right.
17Prv 23:1717אַל־יְקַנֵּ֣א לִ֭בְּךָ בַּֽחַטָּאִ֑ים כִּ֥י אִם־בְּיִרְאַת־יְ֝הוָ֗ה כָּל־הַיּֽוֹם׃Prv 23:17
Don’t let your heart envy sinners;
but rather fear Yahweh all the day long.
Prv 23:17Prv 23:17μὴ ζηλούτω ἡ καρδία σου ἁμαρτωλούς ἀλλὰ ἐν φόβῳ κυρίου ἴσθι ὅλην τὴν ἡμέρανPrv 23:17
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.
Prv 23:17
Don’t let your heart envy sinners;
but rather fear Yahweh all the day long.
18Prv 23:1818כִּ֭י אִם־יֵ֣שׁ אַחֲרִ֑ית וְ֝תִקְוָתְךָ֗ לֹ֣א תִכָּרֵֽת׃Prv 23:18
Indeed surely there is a future hope,
and your hope will not be cut off.
Prv 23:18Prv 23:18ἐὰν γὰρ τηρήσῃς αὐτά ἔσται σοι ἔκγονα ἡ δὲ ἐλπίς σου οὐκ ἀποστήσεταιPrv 23:18
For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed.
Prv 23:18
Indeed surely there is a future hope,
and your hope will not be cut off.
19Prv 23:1919שְׁמַע־אַתָּ֣ה בְנִ֣י וַחֲכָ֑ם וְאַשֵּׁ֖ר בַּדֶּ֣רֶךְ לִבֶּֽךָ׃Prv 23:19
Listen, my son, and be wise,
and keep your heart on the right path!

Hear, my son, and be wise, and rightly direct the thoughts of thine heart.

20Prv 23:2020אַל־תְּהִ֥י בְסֹֽבְאֵי־יָ֑יִן בְּזֹלֲלֵ֖י בָשָׂ֣ר לָֽמוֹ׃Prv 23:20
Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine,
or those who gorge themselves on meat:
Prv 23:20Prv 23:20μὴ ἴσθι οἰνοπότης μηδὲ ἐκτείνου συμβολαῖς κρεῶν τε ἀγορασμοῖςPrv 23:20
Be not a wine-bibber, neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh:
Prv 23:20
Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine,
or those who gorge themselves on meat:
21Prv 23:2121כִּי־סֹבֵ֣א וְ֭זוֹלֵל יִוָּרֵ֑שׁ וּ֝קְרָעִ֗ים תַּלְבִּ֥ישׁ נוּמָֽה׃Prv 23:21
for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor;
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
Prv 23:21Prv 23:21πᾶς γὰρ μέθυσος καὶ πορνοκόπος πτωχεύσει καὶ ἐνδύσεται διερρηγμένα καὶ ῥακώδη πᾶς ὑπνώδηςPrv 23:21
for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.

for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor;
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22Prv 23:2222שְׁמַ֣ע לְ֭אָבִיךָ זֶ֣ה יְלָדֶ֑ךָ וְאַל־תָּ֝ב֗וּז כִּֽי־זָקְנָ֥ה אִמֶּֽךָ׃Prv 23:22
Listen to your father who gave you life,
and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

Prv 23:24
The father of the righteous has great joy.
Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.
Prv 23:24Prv 23:24καλῶς ἐκτρέφει πατὴρ δίκαιος ἐπὶ δὲ υἱῷ σοφῷ εὐφραίνεται ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦPrv 23:24
A righteous father brings up his children well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son.

The father of the righteous has great joy.
Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.
25Prv 23:2525יִֽשְׂמַח־אָבִ֥יךָ וְאִמֶּ֑ךָ וְ֝תָגֵ֗ל יֽוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ׃Prv 23:25
Let your father and your mother be glad!
Let her who bore you rejoice!

Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad.

My son, give me your heart;
and let your eyes keep in my ways.

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27Prv 23:2727כִּֽי־שׁוּחָ֣ה עֲמֻקָּ֣ה זוֹנָ֑ה וּבְאֵ֥ר צָ֝רָ֗ה נָכְרִיָּֽה׃Prv 23:27
For a prostitute is a deep pit;
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
Prv 23:27Prv 23:27πίθος γὰρ τετρημένος ἐστὶν ἀλλότριος οἶκος καὶ φρέαρ στενὸν ἀλλότριονPrv 23:27
For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow.
Prv 23:27
For a prostitute is a deep pit;
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28Prv 23:2828אַף־הִ֭יא כְּחֶ֣תֶף תֶּֽאֱרֹ֑ב וּ֝בוֹגְדִ֗ים בְּאָדָ֥ם תּוֹסִֽף׃Prv 23:28
Yes, she lies in wait like a robber,
and increases the unfaithful among men.
Prv 23:28Prv 23:28οὗτος γὰρ συντόμως ἀπολεῖται καὶ πᾶς παράνομος ἀναλωθήσεταιPrv 23:28
For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.

Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has strife?
Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises?
Who has bloodshot eyes?
Prv 23:29Prv 23:29τίνι οὐαί τίνι θόρυβος τίνι κρίσις τίνι ἀηδίαι καὶ λέσχαι τίνι συντρίμματα διὰ κενῆς τίνος πέλειοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοίPrv 23:29
Who has woe? who trouble? who has quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who has bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?

Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has strife?
Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises?
Who has bloodshot eyes?
30Prv 23:3030לַֽמְאַחֲרִ֥ים עַל־הַיָּ֑יִן לַ֝בָּאִ֗ים לַחְקֹ֥ר מִמְסָֽךְ׃Prv 23:30
Those who stay long at the wine;
those who go to seek out mixed wine.
Prv 23:30Prv 23:30οὐ τῶν ἐγχρονιζόντων ἐν οἴνοις οὐ τῶν ἰχνευόντων ποῦ πότοι γίνονταιPrv 23:30
Are not those of them that stay long at wine? are not those of them that haunt the places where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse with them openly.
Prv 23:30
Those who stay long at the wine;
those who go to seek out mixed wine.
31Prv 23:3131אַל־תֵּ֥רֶא יַיִן֮ כִּ֪י יִתְאַ֫דָּ֥ם כִּֽי־יִתֵּ֣ן ‏{ בכיס בַּכּ֣וֹס }‏ עֵינ֑וֹ יִ֝תְהַלֵּ֗ךְ בְּמֵישָׁרִֽים׃

Prv 23:31
Don’t look at the wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly.
Prv 23:31Prv 23:31μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ ἀλλὰ ὁμιλεῖτε ἀνθρώποις δικαίοις καὶ ὁμιλεῖτε ἐν περιπάτοις ἐὰν γὰρ εἰς τὰς φιάλας καὶ τὰ ποτήρια δῷς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου ὕστερον περιπατήσεις γυμνότερος ὑπέρουPrv 23:31
For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.

Don’t look at the wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly.
32Prv 23:3232אַ֭חֲרִיתוֹ כְּנָחָ֣שׁ יִשָּׁ֑ךְ וּֽכְצִפְעֹנִ֥י יַפְרִֽשׁ׃Prv 23:32
In the end, it bites like a snake,
and poisons like a viper.
Prv 23:32Prv 23:32τὸ δὲ ἔσχατον ὥσπερ ὑπὸ ὄφεως πεπληγὼς ἐκτείνεται καὶ ὥσπερ ὑπὸ κεράστου διαχεῖται αὐτῷ ὁ ἰόςPrv 23:32
But at last such a one stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.

In the end, it bites like a snake,
and poisons like a viper.
33Prv 23:3333עֵ֭ינֶיךָ יִרְא֣וּ זָר֑וֹת וְ֝לִבְּךָ֗ יְדַבֵּ֥ר תַּהְפֻּכֽוֹת׃Prv 23:33
Your eyes will see strange things,

Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things.

Your eyes will see strange things,

Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea,
or as he who lies on top of the rigging:
