2Jb 21:22שִׁמְע֣וּ שָׁ֭מוֹעַ מִלָּתִ֑י וּתְהִי־זֹ֝֗את תַּנְח֥וּמֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃Jb 21:2
“Listen diligently to my speech.
Let this be your consolation.
Jb 21:2Jb 21:2ἀκούσατε ἀκούσατέ μου τῶν λόγων ἵνα μὴ ᾖ μοι παρ’ ὑμῶν αὕτη ἡ παράκλησιςJb 21:2
Hear ye, hear ye my words, that I may not have this consolation from you.

“Listen diligently to my speech.
Let this be your consolation.
3Jb 21:33שָׂ֭אוּנִי וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְאַחַ֖ר דַּבְּרִ֣י תַלְעִֽיג׃Jb 21:3
Allow me, and I also will speak;
After I have spoken, mock on.
Jb 21:3Jb 21:3ἄρατέ με ἐγὼ δὲ λαλήσω εἶτ’ οὐ καταγελάσετέ μουJb 21:3
Raise me, and I will speak; then ye shall not laugh me to scorn.

Allow me, and I also will speak;
After I have spoken, mock on.
4Jb 21:44הֶ֭אָנֹכִי לְאָדָ֣ם שִׂיחִ֑י וְאִם־מַ֝דּ֗וּעַ לֹא־תִקְצַ֥ר רוּחִֽי׃Jb 21:4
As for me, is my complaint to man?
Why shouldn’t I be impatient?
Jb 21:4Jb 21:4τί γάρ μὴ ἀνθρώπου μου ἡ ἔλεγξις ἢ διὰ τί οὐ θυμωθήσομαιJb 21:4
What! is my reproof of man? and why should I not be angry?
Jb 21:4
As for me, is my complaint to man?
Why shouldn’t I be impatient?
5Jb 21:55פְּנוּ־אֵלַ֥י וְהָשַׁ֑מּוּ וְשִׂ֖ימוּ יָ֣ד עַל־פֶּֽה׃Jb 21:5
Look at me, and be astonished.
Lay your hand on your mouth.
Jb 21:5Jb 21:5εἰσβλέψαντες εἰς ἐμὲ θαυμάσατε χεῖρα θέντες ἐπὶ σιαγόνιJb 21:5
Look upon me, and wonder, laying your hand upon your cheek.

Look at me, and be astonished.
Lay your hand on your mouth.
6Jb 21:66וְאִם־זָכַ֥רְתִּי וְנִבְהָ֑לְתִּי וְאָחַ֥ז בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י פַּלָּצֽוּת׃Jb 21:6
When I remember, I am troubled.
Horror takes hold of my flesh.
Jb 21:6Jb 21:6ἐάν τε γὰρ μνησθῶ ἐσπούδακα ἔχουσιν δέ μου τὰς σάρκας ὀδύναιJb 21:6
For even when I remember, I am alarmed, and pains seize my flesh.

When I remember, I am troubled.
Horror takes hold of my flesh.
7Jb 21:77מַדּ֣וּעַ רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִחְי֑וּ עָ֝תְק֗וּ גַּם־גָּ֥בְרוּ חָֽיִל׃Jb 21:7
“Why do the wicked live,
become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?
Jb 21:7Jb 21:7διὰ τί ἀσεβεῖς ζῶσιν πεπαλαίωνται δὲ καὶ ἐν πλούτῳJb 21:7
Wherefore do the ungodly live, and grow old even in wealth?

“Why do the wicked live,
become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?
8Jb 21:88זַרְעָ֤ם נָכ֣וֹן לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם עִמָּ֑ם וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֗ם לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃Jb 21:8
Their child is established with them in their sight,
their offspring before their eyes.
Jb 21:8Jb 21:8ὁ σπόρος αὐτῶν κατὰ ψυχήν τὰ δὲ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖςJb 21:8
Their seed is according to their desire, and their children are in their sight.

Their child is established with them in their sight,
their offspring before their eyes.
9Jb 21:99בָּתֵּיהֶ֣ם שָׁל֣וֹם מִפָּ֑חַד וְלֹ֤א שֵׁ֖בֶט אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃Jb 21:9
Their houses are safe from fear,
neither is the rod of God upon them.
Jb 21:9Jb 21:9οἱ οἶκοι αὐτῶν εὐθηνοῦσιν φόβος δὲ οὐδαμοῦ μάστιξ δὲ παρὰ κυρίου οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπ’ αὐτοῖςJb 21:9
Their houses are prosperous, neither have they any where cause for fear, neither is there a scourge from the Lord upon them.

Their houses are safe from fear,
neither is the rod of God upon them.
10Jb 21:1010שׁוֹר֣וֹ עִ֭בַּר וְלֹ֣א יַגְעִ֑ל תְּפַלֵּ֥ט פָּ֝רָת֗וֹ וְלֹ֣א תְשַׁכֵּֽל׃Jb 21:10
Their bulls breed without fail.
Their cows calve, and don’t miscarry.
Jb 21:10Jb 21:10ἡ βοῦς αὐτῶν οὐκ ὠμοτόκησεν διεσώθη δὲ αὐτῶν ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα καὶ οὐκ ἔσφαλενJb 21:10
Their cow does not cast her calf, and their beast with young is safe, and does not miscarry.

Their bulls breed without fail.

11Jb 21:1111יְשַׁלְּח֣וּ כַ֭צֹּאן עֲוִילֵיהֶ֑ם וְ֝יַלְדֵיהֶ֗ם יְרַקֵּדֽוּן׃Jb 21:11
They send forth their little ones like a flock.
Their children dance.
Jb 21:11Jb 21:11μένουσιν δὲ ὡς πρόβατα αἰώνια τὰ δὲ παιδία αὐτῶν προσπαίζουσινJb 21:11
And they remain as an unfailing flock, and their children play before them, taking up the psaltery and harp;

12Jb 21:1212יִ֭שְׂאוּ כְּתֹ֣ף וְכִנּ֑וֹר וְ֝יִשְׂמְח֗וּ לְק֣וֹל עוּגָֽב׃Jb 21:12
They sing to the tambourine and harp,
and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.
Jb 21:12Jb 21:12ἀναλαβόντες ψαλτήριον καὶ κιθάραν καὶ εὐφραίνονται φωνῇ ψαλμοῦJb 21:12
and they rejoice at the voice of a song.

They sing to the tambourine and harp,

Jb 21:13
They spend their days in prosperity.
In an instant they go down to Sheol.
Jb 21:13Jb 21:13συνετέλεσαν δὲ ἐν ἀγαθοῖς τὸν βίον αὐτῶν ἐν δὲ ἀναπαύσει ᾅδου ἐκοιμήθησανJb 21:13
And they spend their days in wealth, and fall asleep in the rest of the grave.

They spend their days in prosperity.
In an instant they go down to Sheol.
14Jb 21:1414וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לָ֭אֵל ס֣וּר מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וְדַ֥עַת דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א חָפָֽצְנוּ׃Jb 21:14
They tell God, ‘Depart from us,
for we don’t want to know about your ways.
Jb 21:14Jb 21:14λέγει δὲ κυρίῳ ἀπόστα ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ὁδούς σου εἰδέναι οὐ βούλομαιJb 21:14
Yet such a man says to the Lord, Depart from me; I desire not to know thy ways.
Jb 21:14
They tell God, ‘Depart from us,
for we don’t want to know about your ways.
15Jb 21:1515מַה־שַׁדַּ֥י כִּֽי־נַֽעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ וּמַה־נּ֝וֹעִ֗יל כִּ֣י נִפְגַּע־בּֽוֹ׃Jb 21:15
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’
Jb 21:15Jb 21:15τί ἱκανός ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ καὶ τίς ὠφέλεια ὅτι ἀπαντήσομεν αὐτῷJb 21:15
What is the Mighty One, that we should serve him? and what profit is there that we should approach him?
Jb 21:15
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’
16Jb 21:1616הֵ֤ן לֹ֣א בְיָדָ֣ם טוּבָ֑ם עֲצַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים רָ֣חֲקָה מֶֽנִּי׃Jb 21:16
Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand.
The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Jb 21:16Jb 21:16ἐν χερσὶν γὰρ ἦν αὐτῶν τὰ ἀγαθά ἔργα δὲ ἀσεβῶν οὐκ ἐφορᾷJb 21:16
For their good things were in their hands, but he regards not the works of the ungodly.
Jb 21:16
Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand.

17Jb 21:1717כַּמָּ֤ה ׀ נֵר־רְשָׁ֘עִ֤ים יִדְעָ֗ךְ וְיָבֹ֣א עָלֵ֣ימוֹ אֵידָ֑ם חֲ֝בָלִ֗ים יְחַלֵּ֥ק בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃Jb 21:17
“How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out,
that their calamity comes on them,
that God distributes sorrows in his anger?
Jb 21:17Jb 21:17οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀσεβῶν λύχνος σβεσθήσεται ἐπελεύσεται δὲ αὐτοῖς ἡ καταστροφή ὠδῖνες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἕξουσιν ἀπὸ ὀργῆςJb 21:17
Nevertheless, the lamp of the ungodly also shall be put out, and destruction shall come upon them, and pangs of vengeance shall seize them.

“How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out,
that their calamity comes on them,
that God distributes sorrows in his anger?
18Jb 21:1818יִהְי֗וּ כְּתֶ֥בֶן לִפְנֵי־ר֑וּחַ וּ֝כְמֹ֗ץ גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ סוּפָֽה׃Jb 21:18
How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind,
as chaff that the storm carries away?
Jb 21:18Jb 21:18ἔσονται δὲ ὥσπερ ἄχυρα πρὸ ἀνέμου ἢ ὥσπερ κονιορτός ὃν ὑφείλατο λαῖλαψJb 21:18
And they shall be as chaff before the wind, or as dust which the storm has taken up.

How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind,

19Jb 21:1919אֱל֗וֹהַּ יִצְפֹּן־לְבָנָ֥יו אוֹנ֑וֹ יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם אֵלָ֣יו וְיֵדָֽע׃Jb 21:19
You say, ‘God lays up his iniquity for his children.’
Let him recompense it to himself, that he may know it.
Jb 21:19Jb 21:19ἐκλίποι υἱοὺς τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ γνώσεταιJb 21:19
Let his substance fail to supply his children: God shall recompense him, and he shall know it.
Jb 21:19
You say, ‘God lays up his iniquity for his children.’
Let him recompense it to himself, that he may know it.
20Jb 21:2020יִרְא֣וּ ‏{ עינו עֵינָ֣יו }‏ כִּיד֑וֹ וּמֵחֲמַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃

Let his own eyes see his destruction.
Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Jb 21:20Jb 21:20ἴδοισαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σφαγήν ἀπὸ δὲ κυρίου μὴ διασωθείηJb 21:20
Let his eyes see his own destruction, and let him not be saved by the Lord.

Let his own eyes see his destruction.
Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21Jb 21:2121כִּ֤י מַה־חֶפְצ֣וֹ בְּבֵית֣וֹ אַחֲרָ֑יו וּמִסְפַּ֖ר חֳדָשָׁ֣יו חֻצָּֽצוּ׃Jb 21:21
For what does he care for his house after him,
when the number of his months is cut off?
Jb 21:21Jb 21:21ὅτι τί θέλημα αὐτοῦ ἐν οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτόν καὶ ἀριθμοὶ μηνῶν αὐτοῦ διῃρέθησανJb 21:21
For his desire is in his house with him, and the number of his months has been suddenly cut off.

For what does he care for his house after him,
when the number of his months is cut off?
22Jb 21:2222הַלְאֵ֥ל יְלַמֶּד־דָּ֑עַת וְ֝ה֗וּא רָמִ֥ים יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃Jb 21:22
“Shall any teach God knowledge,
since he judges those who are high?
Jb 21:22Jb 21:22πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμην αὐτὸς δὲ φόνους διακρινεῖJb 21:22
Is it not the Lord who teaches understanding and knowledge? and does not he judge murders?
Jb 21:22
“Shall any teach God knowledge,
since he judges those who are high?
23Jb 21:2323זֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּעֶ֣צֶם תֻּמּ֑וֹ כֻּ֝לּ֗וֹ שַׁלְאֲנַ֥ן וְשָׁלֵֽיו׃Jb 21:23
One dies in his full strength,
being wholly at ease and quiet.
Jb 21:23Jb 21:23οὗτος ἀποθανεῖται ἐν κράτει ἁπλοσύνης αὐτοῦ ὅλος δὲ εὐπαθῶν καὶ εὐθηνῶνJb 21:23
One shall die in his perfect strength, and wholly at ease and prosperous;
Jb 21:23
One dies in his full strength,
being wholly at ease and quiet.
24Jb 21:2424עֲ֭טִינָיו מָלְא֣וּ חָלָ֑ב וּמֹ֖חַ עַצְמוֹתָ֣יו יְשֻׁקֶּֽה׃Jb 21:24
His pails are full of milk.
The marrow of his bones is moistened.
Jb 21:24Jb 21:24τὰ δὲ ἔγκατα αὐτοῦ πλήρη στέατος μυελὸς δὲ αὐτοῦ διαχεῖταιJb 21:24
and his inwards are full of fat, and his marrow is diffused throughout him.

They lie down alike in the dust.
The worm covers them.

But they lie down in the earth together, and corruption covers them.

“Behold, I know your thoughts,
the devices with which you would wrong me.

So I know you, that ye presumptuously attack me:

28Jb 21:2828כִּ֤י תֹֽאמְר֗וּ אַיֵּ֥ה בֵית־נָדִ֑יב וְ֝אַיֵּ֗ה אֹ֤הֶל ׀ מִשְׁכְּנ֬וֹת רְשָׁעִֽים׃Jb 21:28
For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince?
Where is the tent in which the wicked lived?’
Jb 21:28Jb 21:28ὅτι ἐρεῖτε ποῦ ἐστιν οἶκος ἄρχοντος καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ σκέπη τῶν σκηνωμάτων τῶν ἀσεβῶνJb 21:28
so that ye will say, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the covering of the tabernacles of the ungodly?

For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince?
Where is the tent in which the wicked lived?’
29Jb 21:2929הֲלֹ֣א שְׁ֭אֶלְתֶּם ע֣וֹבְרֵי דָ֑רֶךְ וְ֝אֹתֹתָ֗ם לֹ֣א תְנַכֵּֽרוּ׃Jb 21:29
Haven’t you asked wayfaring men?
Don’t you know their evidences,
Jb 21:29Jb 21:29ἐρωτήσατε παραπορευομένους ὁδόν καὶ τὰ σημεῖα αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπαλλοτριώσετεJb 21:29
Ask those that go by the way, and do not disown their tokens.

Haven’t you asked wayfaring men?
Don’t you know their evidences,
30Jb 21:3030כִּ֤י לְי֣וֹם אֵ֭יד יֵחָ֣שֶׂךְ רָ֑ע לְי֖וֹם עֲבָר֣וֹת יוּבָֽלוּ׃Jb 21:30
that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity,
That they are led forth to the day of wrath?
Jb 21:30Jb 21:30ὅτι εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπωλείας κουφίζεται ὁ πονηρός εἰς ἡμέραν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπαχθήσονταιJb 21:30
For the wicked hastens to the day of destruction: they shall be led away for the day of his vengeance.

31Jb 21:3131מִֽי־יַגִּ֣יד עַל־פָּנָ֣יו דַּרְכּ֑וֹ וְהֽוּא־עָ֝שָׂ֗ה מִ֣י יְשַׁלֶּם־לֽוֹ׃Jb 21:31
Who shall declare his way to his face?
Who shall repay him what he has done?
Jb 21:31Jb 21:31τίς ἀπαγγελεῖ ἐπὶ προσώπου αὐτοῦ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν τίς ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷJb 21:31
Who will tell him his way to his face, whereas he has done it? who shall recompense him?
Jb 21:31
Who shall declare his way to his face?
Who shall repay him what he has done?
32Jb 21:3232וְ֭הוּא לִקְבָר֣וֹת יוּבָ֑ל וְֽעַל־גָּדִ֥ישׁ יִשְׁקֽוֹד׃Jb 21:32
Yet he will be borne to the grave.
Men shall keep watch over the tomb.
Jb 21:32Jb 21:32καὶ αὐτὸς εἰς τάφους ἀπηνέχθη καὶ ἐπὶ σορῷ ἠγρύπνησενJb 21:32
And he has been led away to the tombs, and he has watched over the heaps.
Jb 21:32
Yet he will be borne to the grave.
Men shall keep watch over the tomb.
33Jb 21:3333מָֽתְקוּ־ל֗וֹ רִגְבֵ֫י נָ֥חַל וְ֭אַחֲרָיו כָּל־אָדָ֣ם יִמְשׁ֑וֹךְ וּ֝לְפָנָ֗יו אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּֽר׃Jb 21:33
The clods of the valley shall be sweet to him.
All men shall draw after him,
as there were innumerable before him.
Jb 21:33Jb 21:33ἐγλυκάνθησαν αὐτῷ χάλικες χειμάρρου καὶ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ἀπελεύσεται καὶ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἀναρίθμητοιJb 21:33
The stones of the valley have been sweet to him, and every man shall depart after him, and there are innumerable ones before him.

So how can you comfort me with nonsense,
because in your answers there remains only falsehood?”

How then do ye comfort me in vain? whereas I have no rest from your molestation.

So how can you comfort me with nonsense,
because in your answers there remains only falsehood?”
