“Man, who is born of a woman,
is of few days, and full of trouble.
Jb 14:1Jb 14:1βροτὸς γὰρ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος καὶ πλήρης ὀργῆςJb 14:1
For a mortal born of a woman is short lived, and full of wrath.

“Man, who is born of a woman,

2Jb 14:22כְּצִ֣יץ יָ֭צָא וַיִּמָּ֑ל וַיִּבְרַ֥ח כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֽוֹד׃Jb 14:2
He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down.
He also flees like a shadow, and doesn’t continue.
Jb 14:2Jb 14:2ἢ ὥσπερ ἄνθος ἀνθῆσαν ἐξέπεσεν ἀπέδρα δὲ ὥσπερ σκιὰ καὶ οὐ μὴ στῇJb 14:2
Or he falls like a flower that has bloomed; and he departs like a shadow, and cannot continue.
Jb 14:2
He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down.

3Jb 14:33אַף־עַל־זֶ֭ה פָּקַ֣חְתָּ עֵינֶ֑ךָ וְאֹ֘תִ֤י תָבִ֖יא בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט עִמָּֽךְ׃Jb 14:3
Do you open your eyes on such a one,
and bring me into judgment with you?
Jb 14:3Jb 14:3οὐχὶ καὶ τούτου λόγον ἐποιήσω καὶ τοῦτον ἐποίησας εἰσελθεῖν ἐν κρίματι ἐνώπιόν σουJb 14:3
Hast thou not taken account even of him, and caused him to enter into judgment before thee?
Jb 14:3
Do you open your eyes on such a one,
and bring me into judgment with you?
4Jb 14:44מִֽי־יִתֵּ֣ן טָ֭הוֹר מִטָּמֵ֗א לֹ֣א אֶחָֽד׃Jb 14:4
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?
Not one.
Jb 14:4Jb 14:4τίς γὰρ καθαρὸς ἔσται ἀπὸ ῥύπου ἀλλ’ οὐθείςJb 14:4
For who shall be pure from uncleanness? not even one;

5Jb 14:55אִ֥ם חֲרוּצִ֨ים ׀ יָמָ֗יו מִֽסְפַּר־חֳדָשָׁ֥יו אִתָּ֑ךְ ‏{ חקו חֻקָּ֥יו }‏ עָ֝שִׂ֗יתָ וְלֹ֣א יַעֲבֽוֹר׃

Jb 14:5
Seeing his days are determined,
the number of his months is with you,
and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass;
Jb 14:5Jb 14:5ἐὰν καὶ μία ἡμέρα ὁ βίος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀριθμητοὶ δὲ μῆνες αὐτοῦ παρὰ σοί εἰς χρόνον ἔθου καὶ οὐ μὴ ὑπερβῇJb 14:5
if even his life should be but one day upon the earth: and his months are numbered by him: thou hast appointed him for a time, and he shall by no means exceed it.
Jb 14:5
Seeing his days are determined,

6Jb 14:66שְׁעֵ֣ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וְיֶחְדָּ֑ל עַד־יִ֝רְצֶ֗ה כְּשָׂכִ֥יר יוֹמֽוֹ׃Jb 14:6
Look away from him, that he may rest,
until he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.
Jb 14:6Jb 14:6ἀπόστα ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἵνα ἡσυχάσῃ καὶ εὐδοκήσῃ τὸν βίον ὥσπερ ὁ μισθωτόςJb 14:6
Depart from him, that he may be quiet, and take pleasure in his life, though as a hireling.

Look away from him, that he may rest,
until he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.
7Jb 14:77כִּ֤י יֵ֥שׁ לָעֵ֗ץ תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה אִֽם־יִ֭כָּרֵת וְע֣וֹד יַחֲלִ֑יף וְ֝יֹֽנַקְתּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א תֶחְדָּֽל׃Jb 14:7
“For there is hope for a tree,
If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
that the tender branch of it will not cease.
Jb 14:7Jb 14:7ἔστιν γὰρ δένδρῳ ἐλπίς ἐὰν γὰρ ἐκκοπῇ ἔτι ἐπανθήσει καὶ ὁ ῥάδαμνος αὐτοῦ οὐ μὴ ἐκλίπῃJb 14:7
For there is hope for a tree, even if it should be cut down, that it shall blossom again, and its branch shall not fail.
Jb 14:7
“For there is hope for a tree,
If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,

8Jb 14:88אִם־יַזְקִ֣ין בָּאָ֣רֶץ שָׁרְשׁ֑וֹ וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר יָמ֥וּת גִּזְעֽוֹ׃Jb 14:8
Though its root grows old in the earth,
and its stock dies in the ground,

For though its root should grow old in the earth, and its stem die in the rock;

Though its root grows old in the earth,
and its stock dies in the ground,
9Jb 14:99מֵרֵ֣יחַ מַ֣יִם יַפְרִ֑חַ וְעָשָׂ֖ה קָצִ֣יר כְּמוֹ־נָֽטַע׃Jb 14:9
yet through the scent of water it will bud,
and put forth boughs like a plant.
Jb 14:9Jb 14:9ἀπὸ ὀσμῆς ὕδατος ἀνθήσει ποιήσει δὲ θερισμὸν ὥσπερ νεόφυτονJb 14:9
it will blossom from the scent of water, and will produce a crop, as one newly planted.

yet through the scent of water it will bud,

10Jb 14:1010וְגֶ֣בֶר יָ֭מוּת וַֽיֶּחֱלָ֑שׁ וַיִּגְוַ֖ע אָדָ֣ם וְאַיּֽוֹ׃Jb 14:10
But man dies, and is laid low.
Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he?
Jb 14:10Jb 14:10ἀνὴρ δὲ τελευτήσας ᾤχετο πεσὼν δὲ βροτὸς οὐκέτι ἔστινJb 14:10
But a man that has died is utterly gone; and when a mortal has fallen, he is no more.

But man dies, and is laid low.
Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he?
11Jb 14:1111אָֽזְלוּ־מַ֭יִם מִנִּי־יָ֑ם וְ֝נָהָ֗ר יֶחֱרַ֥ב וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃Jb 14:11
As the waters fail from the sea,
and the river wastes and dries up,
Jb 14:11Jb 14:11χρόνῳ γὰρ σπανίζεται θάλασσα ποταμὸς δὲ ἐρημωθεὶς ἐξηράνθηJb 14:11
For the sea wastes in length of time, and a river fails and is dried up.

As the waters fail from the sea,
and the river wastes and dries up,
12Jb 14:1212וְאִ֥ישׁ שָׁכַ֗ב וְֽלֹא־יָ֫ק֥וּם עַד־בִּלְתִּ֣י שָׁ֭מַיִם לֹ֣א יָקִ֑יצוּ וְלֹֽא־יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ מִשְּׁנָתָֽם׃Jb 14:12
so man lies down and doesn’t rise.
Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake,
nor be roused out of their sleep.
Jb 14:12Jb 14:12ἄνθρωπος δὲ κοιμηθεὶς οὐ μὴ ἀναστῇ ἕως ἂν ὁ οὐρανὸς οὐ μὴ συρραφῇ καὶ οὐκ ἐξυπνισθήσονται ἐξ ὕπνου αὐτῶνJb 14:12
And man that has lain down in death shall certainly not rise again till the heaven be dissolved, and they shall not awake from their sleep.
Jb 14:12
so man lies down and doesn’t rise.
Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake,
nor be roused out of their sleep.
13Jb 14:1313מִ֤י יִתֵּ֨ן ׀ בִּשְׁא֬וֹל תַּצְפִּנֵ֗נִי תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי עַד־שׁ֣וּב אַפֶּ֑ךָ תָּ֤שִׁ֥ית לִ֖י חֹ֣ק וְתִזְכְּרֵֽנִי׃Jb 14:13
“Oh that you would hide me in Sheol,
that you would keep me secret, until your wrath is past,
that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
Jb 14:13Jb 14:13εἰ γὰρ ὄφελον ἐν ᾅδῃ με ἐφύλαξας ἔκρυψας δέ με ἕως ἂν παύσηταί σου ἡ ὀργὴ καὶ τάξῃ μοι χρόνον ἐν ᾧ μνείαν μου ποιήσῃJb 14:13
For oh that thou hadst kept me in the grave, and hadst hidden me until thy wrath should cease, and thou shouldest set me a time in which thou wouldest remember me!

“Oh that you would hide me in Sheol,
that you would keep me secret, until your wrath is past,
that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14Jb 14:1414אִם־יָמ֥וּת גֶּ֗בֶר הֲיִ֫חְיֶ֥ה כָּל־יְמֵ֣י צְבָאִ֣י אֲיַחֵ֑ל עַד־בּ֝֗וֹא חֲלִיפָתִֽי׃Jb 14:14
If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my warfare would I wait,
until my release should come.
Jb 14:14Jb 14:14ἐὰν γὰρ ἀποθάνῃ ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται συντελέσας ἡμέρας τοῦ βίου αὐτοῦ ὑπομενῶ ἕως ἂν πάλιν γένωμαιJb 14:14
For if a man should die, shall he live again, having accomplished the days of his life? I will wait till I exist again?
Jb 14:14
If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my warfare would I wait,
until my release should come.
15Jb 14:1515תִּ֭קְרָא וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ךָּ לְֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יָדֶ֣יךָ תִכְסֹֽף׃Jb 14:15
You would call, and I would answer you.
You would have a desire to the work of your hands.
Jb 14:15Jb 14:15εἶτα καλέσεις ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι τὰ δὲ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σου μὴ ἀποποιοῦJb 14:15
Then shalt thou call, and I will hearken to thee: but do not thou reject the work of thine hands.
Jb 14:15
You would call, and I would answer you.
You would have a desire to the work of your hands.
16Jb 14:1616כִּֽי־עַ֭תָּה צְעָדַ֣י תִּסְפּ֑וֹר לֹֽא־תִ֝שְׁמ֗וֹר עַל־חַטָּאתִֽי׃Jb 14:16
But now you number my steps.
Don’t you watch over my sin?
Jb 14:16Jb 14:16ἠρίθμησας δέ μου τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα καὶ οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ σε οὐδὲν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μουJb 14:16
But thou hast numbered my devices: and not one of my sins shall escape thee?
Jb 14:16
But now you number my steps.
Don’t you watch over my sin?
17Jb 14:1717חָתֻ֣ם בִּצְר֣וֹר פִּשְׁעִ֑י וַ֝תִּטְפֹּ֗ל עַל־עֲוֹנִֽי׃Jb 14:17
My disobedience is sealed up in a bag.
You fasten up my iniquity.
Jb 14:17Jb 14:17ἐσφράγισας δέ μου τὰς ἀνομίας ἐν βαλλαντίῳ ἐπεσημήνω δέ εἴ τι ἄκων παρέβηνJb 14:17
An thou hast sealed up my transgressions in a bag, and marked if I have been guilty of any transgression unawares.
Jb 14:17
My disobedience is sealed up in a bag.
You fasten up my iniquity.
18Jb 14:1818וְ֭אוּלָם הַר־נוֹפֵ֣ל יִבּ֑וֹל וְ֝צ֗וּר יֶעְתַּ֥ק מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃Jb 14:18
“But the mountain falling comes to nothing.
The rock is removed out of its place;
Jb 14:18Jb 14:18καὶ πλὴν ὄρος πῖπτον διαπεσεῖται καὶ πέτρα παλαιωθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆςJb 14:18
And verily a mountain falling will utterly be destroyed, and a rock shall be worn out of its place.
Jb 14:18
“But the mountain falling comes to nothing.
The rock is removed out of its place;
19Jb 14:1919אֲבָנִ֤ים ׀ שָׁ֥חֲקוּ מַ֗יִם תִּשְׁטֹֽף־סְפִיחֶ֥יהָ עֲפַר־אָ֑רֶץ וְתִקְוַ֖ת אֱנ֣וֹשׁ הֶאֱבַֽדְתָּ׃Jb 14:19
The waters wear the stones.
The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth.
So you destroy the hope of man.
Jb 14:19Jb 14:19λίθους ἐλέαναν ὕδατα καὶ κατέκλυσεν ὕδατα ὕπτια τοῦ χώματος τῆς γῆς καὶ ὑπομονὴν ἀνθρώπου ἀπώλεσαςJb 14:19
The waters wear the stones, and waters falling headlong overflow a heap of the earth: and thou destroyest the hope of man.
Jb 14:19
The waters wear the stones.
The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth.
So you destroy the hope of man.
20Jb 14:2020תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ לָ֭נֶצַח וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה פָ֝נָ֗יו וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃Jb 14:20
You forever prevail against him, and he departs.
You change his face, and send him away.
Jb 14:20Jb 14:20ὦσας αὐτὸν εἰς τέλος καὶ ᾤχετο ἐπέστησας αὐτῷ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαςJb 14:20
Thou drivest him to an end, and he is gone: thou settest thy face against him, and sendest him away;

You forever prevail against him, and he departs.
You change his face, and send him away.
21Jb 14:2121יִכְבְּד֣וּ בָ֭נָיו וְלֹ֣א יֵדָ֑ע וְ֝יִצְעֲר֗וּ וְֽלֹא־יָבִ֥ין לָֽמוֹ׃Jb 14:21
His sons come to honor, and he doesn’t know it.
They are brought low, but he doesn’t perceive it of them.
Jb 14:21Jb 14:21πολλῶν δὲ γενομένων τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ οὐκ οἶδεν ἐὰν δὲ ὀλίγοι γένωνται οὐκ ἐπίσταταιJb 14:21
and though his children be multiplied, he knows it not; and if they be few, he is not aware.
Jb 14:21
His sons come to honor, and he doesn’t know it.

22Jb 14:2222אַךְ־בְּ֭שָׂרוֹ עָלָ֣יו יִכְאָ֑ב וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ עָלָ֥יו תֶּאֱבָֽל׃ פ Jb 14:22
But his flesh on him has pain,
and his soul within him mourns.”

But his flesh is in pain, and his soul mourns.
