¶The burden of the valley of vision. What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops?

THE WORD OF THE VALLEY OF SION. What has happened to thee, that now ye are all gone up to the housetops which help you not?

2Is 22:22תְּשֻׁא֣וֹת ׀ מְלֵאָ֗ה עִ֚יר הֽוֹמִיָּ֔ה קִרְיָ֖ה עַלִּיזָ֑ה חֲלָלַ֙יִךְ֙ לֹ֣א חַלְלֵי־חֶ֔רֶב וְלֹ֖א מֵתֵ֥י מִלְחָמָֽה׃Is 22:2
You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword, neither are they dead in battle.
Is 22:2Is 22:2μάταια ἐνεπλήσθη ἡ πόλις βοώντων οἱ τραυματίαι σου οὐ τραυματίαι μαχαίρας οὐδὲ οἱ νεκροί σου νεκροὶ πολέμουIs 22:2
The city is filled with shouting men: thy slain are not slain with swords, nor are thy dead those who have died in battle.
Is 22:2You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword, neither are they dead in battle.The city is filled with the bellowing; your wounded are not wounded with with swords, neither your dead dead by war.

3Is 22:33כָּל־קְצִינַ֥יִךְ נָֽדְדוּ־יַ֖חַד מִקֶּ֣שֶׁת אֻסָּ֑רוּ כָּל־נִמְצָאַ֙יִךְ֙ אֻסְּר֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו מֵרָח֖וֹק בָּרָֽחוּ׃Is 22:3
All your rulers fled away together. They were bound by the archers. All who were found by you were bound together. They fled far away.
Is 22:3Is 22:3πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντές σου πεφεύγασιν καὶ οἱ ἁλόντες σκληρῶς δεδεμένοι εἰσίν καὶ οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἐν σοὶ πόρρω πεφεύγασινIs 22:3
All thy princes have fled, and thy captives are tightly bound, and the mighty men in thee have fled far away.
Is 22:3All your rulers fled away together. They were bound by the archers. All who were found by you were bound together. They fled far away. and the ones caught are hardly bound and the strong ones in you have fled far off.

4Is 22:44עַל־כֵּ֥ן אָמַ֛רְתִּי שְׁע֥וּ מִנִּ֖י אֲמָרֵ֣ר בַּבֶּ֑כִי אַל־תָּאִ֣יצוּ לְנַֽחֲמֵ֔נִי עַל־שֹׁ֖ד בַּת־עַמִּֽי׃Is 22:4
Therefore I said, “Look away from me. I will weep bitterly. Don’t labor to comfort me for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Is 22:4Is 22:4διὰ τοῦτο εἶπα ἄφετέ με πικρῶς κλαύσομαι μὴ κατισχύσητε παρακαλεῖν με ἐπὶ τὸ σύντριμμα τῆς θυγατρὸς τοῦ γένους μουIs 22:4
Therefore I said, Let me alone, I will weep bitterly; labour not to comfort me for the breach of the daughter of my people.
Is 22:4Therefore I said, “Look away from me. I will weep bitterly. Don’t labor to comfort me for the destruction of the daughter of my people."Leave me (alone), I will weep bitterly. You will not prevail to comfort me over the wound of the daughter of my people.

5Is 22:55כִּ֣י יוֹם֩ מְהוּמָ֨ה וּמְבוּסָ֜ה וּמְבוּכָ֗ה לַֽאדֹנָ֧י יְהוִ֛ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּגֵ֣יא חִזָּי֑וֹן מְקַרְקַ֥ר קִ֖ר וְשׁ֥וֹעַ אֶל־הָהָֽר׃Is 22:5
For it is a day of confusion, and of treading down, and of perplexity, from the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, in the valley of vision; a breaking down of the walls, and a crying to the mountains.”

For it is a day of trouble, and of destruction, and of treading down, and there is perplexity sent from the Lord of hosts: they wander in the valley of Sion; they wander from the least to the greatest on the mountains.
Is 22:5For it is a day of confusion, and of treading down, and of perplexity, from the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, in the valley of vision; a breaking down of the walls, and a crying to the mountains.”disorder and destruction and being trampled under foot and being led astray from The Lord of Sabaoth in the cleft of Sion, they are wandering from The Lord a great wandering upon the mountains

Elam carried his quiver, with chariots of men and horsemen; and Kir uncovered the shield.

It happened that your choicest valleys were full of chariots, and the horsemen set themselves in array at the gate.
Is 22:7Is 22:7καὶ ἔσονται αἱ ἐκλεκταὶ φάραγγές σου πλησθήσονται ἁρμάτων οἱ δὲ ἱππεῖς ἐμφράξουσι τὰς πύλας σουIs 22:7
And it shall be that thy choice valleys shall be filled with chariots, and horsemen shall block up thy gates.

It happened that your choicest valleys were full of chariots, and the horsemen set themselves in array at the gate.
8Is 22:88וַיְגַ֕ל אֵ֖ת מָסַ֣ךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַתַּבֵּט֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא אֶל־נֶ֖שֶׁק בֵּ֥ית הַיָּֽעַר׃Is 22:8
He took away the covering of Judah; and you looked in that day to the armor in the house of the forest.
Is 22:8Is 22:8καὶ ἀνακαλύψουσιν τὰς πύλας Ιουδα καὶ ἐμβλέψονται τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς οἴκους τῆς πόλεωςIs 22:8
And they shall uncover the gates of Juda, and they shall look in that day on the choice houses of the city.
Is 22:8
He took away the covering of Judah; and you looked in that day to the armor in the house of the forest.
9Is 22:99וְאֵ֨ת בְּקִיעֵ֧י עִיר־דָּוִ֛ד רְאִיתֶ֖ם כִּי־רָ֑בּוּ וַֽתְּקַבְּצ֔וּ אֶת־מֵ֥י הַבְּרֵכָ֖ה הַתַּחְתּוֹנָֽה׃Is 22:9
You saw the breaches of the city of David, that they were many; and you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
Is 22:9Is 22:9καὶ ἀνακαλύψουσιν τὰ κρυπτὰ τῶν οἴκων τῆς ἄκρας Δαυιδ καὶ εἴδοσαν ὅτι πλείους εἰσὶν καὶ ὅτι ἀπέστρεψαν τὸ ὕδωρ τῆς ἀρχαίας κολυμβήθρας εἰς τὴν πόλινIs 22:9
And they shall uncover the secret places of the houses of the citadel of David: and they saw that they were many, and that one had turned the water of the old pool into the city;

You saw the breaches of the city of David, that they were many; and you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
10Is 22:1010וְאֶת־בָּתֵּ֥י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם סְפַרְתֶּ֑ם וַתִּתְֿצוּ֙ הַבָּ֣תִּ֔ים לְבַצֵּ֖ר הַחוֹמָֽה׃Is 22:10
You numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall.
Is 22:10Is 22:10καὶ ὅτι καθείλοσαν τοὺς οἴκους Ιερουσαλημ εἰς ὀχύρωμα τοῦ τείχους τῇ πόλειIs 22:10
and that they had pulled down the houses of Jerusalem, to fortify the wall of the city.

11Is 22:1111וּמִקְוָ֣ה ׀ עֲשִׂיתֶ֗ם בֵּ֚ין הַחֹ֣מֹתַ֔יִם לְמֵ֖י הַבְּרֵכָ֣ה הַיְשָׁנָ֑ה וְלֹ֤א הִבַּטְתֶּם֙ אֶל־עֹשֶׂ֔יהָ וְיֹצְרָ֥הּ מֵֽרָח֖וֹק לֹ֥א רְאִיתֶֽם׃Is 22:11
You also made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you didn’t look to him who had done this, neither did you have respect for him who purposed it long ago.
Is 22:11Is 22:11καὶ ἐποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς ὕδωρ ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν δύο τειχέων ἐσώτερον τῆς κολυμβήθρας τῆς ἀρχαίας καὶ οὐκ ἐνεβλέψατε εἰς τὸν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς ποιήσαντα αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν κτίσαντα αὐτὴν οὐκ εἴδετεIs 22:11
And ye procured to yourselves water between the two walls within the ancient pool: but ye looked not to him that made it from the beginning, and regarded not him that created it.

In that day, the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, called to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to dressing in sackcloth:
Is 22:12Is 22:12καὶ ἐκάλεσεν κύριος σαβαωθ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ κλαυθμὸν καὶ κοπετὸν καὶ ξύρησιν καὶ ζῶσιν σάκκωνIs 22:12
And the Lord, the Lord of hosts, called in that day for weeping, and lamentation, and baldness, and for girding with sackcloth:

13Is 22:1313וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ שָׂשׂ֣וֹן וְשִׂמְחָ֗ה הָרֹ֤ג ׀ בָּקָר֙ וְשָׁחֹ֣ט צֹ֔אן אָכֹ֥ל בָּשָׂ֖ר וְשָׁת֣וֹת יָ֑יִן אָכ֣וֹל וְשָׁת֔וֹ כִּ֥י מָחָ֖ר נָמֽוּת׃Is 22:13
and behold, joy and gladness, killing cattle and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.”
Is 22:13Is 22:13αὐτοὶ δὲ ἐποιήσαντο εὐφροσύνην καὶ ἀγαλλίαμα σφάζοντες μόσχους καὶ θύοντες πρόβατα ὥστε φαγεῖν κρέα καὶ πιεῖν οἶνον λέγοντες φάγωμεν καὶ πίωμεν αὔριον γὰρ ἀποθνῄσκομενIs 22:13
but they engaged in joy and gladness, slaying calves, and killing sheep, so as to eat flesh, and drink wine; saying, Let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die.

and behold, joy and gladness, killing cattle and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.”
14Is 22:1414וְנִגְלָ֥ה בְאָזְנָ֖י יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אִם־יְ֠כֻפַּר הֶעָוֹ֨ן הַזֶּ֤ה לָכֶם֙ עַד־תְּמֻת֔וּן אָמַ֛ר אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ פ Is 22:14
Yahweh of Armies revealed himself in my ears, “Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,” says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies.
Is 22:14Is 22:14καὶ ἀνακεκαλυμμένα ταῦτά ἐστιν ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν κυρίου σαβαωθ ὅτι οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται ὑμῖν αὕτη ἡ ἁμαρτία ἕως ἂν ἀποθάνητεIs 22:14
And these things are revealed in the ears of the Lord of hosts: for this sin shall not be forgiven you, until ye die.

Yahweh of Armies revealed himself in my ears, “Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,” says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies.
15Is 22:1515כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה צְבָא֑וֹת לֶךְ־בֹּא֙ אֶל־הַסֹּכֵ֣ן הַזֶּ֔ה עַל־שֶׁבְנָ֖א אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הַבָּֽיִת׃Is 22:15
¶Thus says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, “Go, get yourself to this treasurer, even to Shebna, who is over the house, and say,
Is 22:15Is 22:15τάδε λέγει κύριος σαβαωθ πορεύου εἰς τὸ παστοφόριον πρὸς Σομναν τὸν ταμίαν καὶ εἰπὸν αὐτῷIs 22:15
Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Go into the chamber, to Somnas the treasurer, and say to him, Why art thou here?

¶Thus says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, “Go, get yourself to this treasurer, even to Shebna, who is over the house, and say,
16Is 22:1616מַה־לְּךָ֥ פֹה֙ וּמִ֣י לְךָ֣ פֹ֔ה כִּֽי־חָצַ֧בְתָּ לְּךָ֛ פֹּ֖ה קָ֑בֶר חֹצְבִ֤י מָרוֹם֙ קִבְר֔וֹ חֹקְקִ֥י בַסֶּ֖לַע מִשְׁכָּ֥ן לֽוֹ׃Is 22:16
‘What are you doing here? Who has you here, that you have dug out a tomb here?’ Cutting himself out a tomb on high, chiseling a habitation for himself in the rock!”
Is 22:16Is 22:16τί σὺ ὧδε καὶ τί σοί ἐστιν ὧδε ὅτι ἐλατόμησας σεαυτῷ ὧδε μνημεῖον καὶ ἐποίησας σεαυτῷ ἐν ὑψηλῷ μνημεῖον καὶ ἔγραψας σεαυτῷ ἐν πέτρᾳ σκηνήνIs 22:16
and what hast thou to do here, that thou hast here hewn thyself a sepulchre, and madest thyself a sepulchre on high, and hast graven for thyself a dwelling in the rock?

‘What are you doing here? Who has you here, that you have dug out a tomb here?’ Cutting himself out a tomb on high, chiseling a habitation for himself in the rock!”
17Is 22:1717הִנֵּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ מְטַלְטֶלְךָ֔ טַלְטֵלָ֖ה גָּ֑בֶר וְעֹטְךָ֖ עָטֹֽה׃Is 22:17
Behold, Yahweh will overcome you and hurl you away violently. Yes, he will grasp you firmly.
Is 22:17Is 22:17ἰδοὺ δὴ κύριος σαβαωθ ἐκβαλεῖ καὶ ἐκτρίψει ἄνδρα καὶ ἀφελεῖ τὴν στολήν σουIs 22:17
Behold now, the Lord of hosts casts forth and will utterly destroy such a man, and will take away thy robe and thy glorious crown,
Is 22:17Behold, Yahweh will overcome you and hurl you away violently. Yes, he will grasp you firmly.Behold indeed the Lord of Sabaoth will cast out and squash man and take away your array

18Is 22:1818צָנ֤וֹף יִצְנָפְךָ֙ צְנֵפָ֔ה כַּדּ֕וּר אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ רַחֲבַ֣ת יָדָ֑יִם שָׁ֣מָּה תָמ֗וּת וְשָׁ֙מָּה֙ מַרְכְּב֣וֹת כְּבוֹדֶ֔ךָ קְל֖וֹן בֵּ֥ית אֲדֹנֶֽיךָ׃Is 22:18
He will surely wind you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a large country. There you will die, and there the chariots of your glory will be, you shame of your lord’s house.
Is 22:18Is 22:18καὶ τὸν στέφανόν σου τὸν ἔνδοξον καὶ ῥίψει σε εἰς χώραν μεγάλην καὶ ἀμέτρητον καὶ ἐκεῖ ἀποθανῇ καὶ θήσει τὸ ἅρμα σου τὸ καλὸν εἰς ἀτιμίαν καὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἄρχοντός σου εἰς καταπάτημαIs 22:18
and will cast thee into a great and unmeasured land, and there thou shalt die: and he will bring thy fair chariot to shame, and the house of thy prince to be trodden down.
Is 22:18He will surely wind you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a large country. There you will die, and there the chariots of your glory will be, you shame of your lord’s house.and the crown-wreath of your glory and you He will cast into a great and immeasurable region and there you will die and He will put your chariot of honor to shame and the house of your ruler, trampled under foot

19Is 22:1919וַהֲדַפְתִּ֖יךָ מִמַּצָּבֶ֑ךָ וּמִמַּעֲמָֽדְךָ֖ יֶהֶרְסֶֽךָ׃Is 22:19
I will thrust you from your office. You will be pulled down from your station.
Is 22:19Is 22:19καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσῃ ἐκ τῆς οἰκονομίας σου καὶ ἐκ τῆς στάσεώς σουIs 22:19
And thou shalt be removed from thy stewardship, and from thy place.
Is 22:19I will thrust you from your office. You will be pulled down from your station.and you will be cut off and removed from your management and out of your place

¶It will happen in that day that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,

21Is 22:2121וְהִלְבַּשְׁתִּ֣יו כֻּתָּנְתֶּ֗ךָ וְאַבְנֵֽטְךָ֙ אֲחַזְּקֶ֔נּוּ וּמֶֽמְשֶׁלְתְּךָ֖ אֶתֵּ֣ן בְּיָד֑וֹ וְהָיָ֥ה לְאָ֛ב לְיוֹשֵׁ֥ב יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וּלְבֵ֥ית יְהוּדָֽה׃Is 22:21
and I will clothe him with your robe, and strengthen him with your belt. I will commit your government into his hand; and he will be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
Is 22:21Is 22:21καὶ ἐνδύσω αὐτὸν τὴν στολήν σου καὶ τὸν στέφανόν σου δώσω αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ κράτος καὶ τὴν οἰκονομίαν σου δώσω εἰς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσται ὡς πατὴρ τοῖς ἐνοικοῦσιν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ τοῖς ἐνοικοῦσιν ἐν ΙουδαIs 22:21
and I will put on him thy robe, and I will grant him thy crown with power, and I will give thy stewardship into his hands: and he shall be as a father to them that dwell in Jerusalem, and to them that dwell in Juda.

and I will clothe him with your robe, and strengthen him with your belt. I will commit your government into his hand; and he will be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
22Is 22:2222וְנָתַתִּ֛י מַפְתֵּ֥חַ בֵּית־דָּוִ֖ד עַל־שִׁכְמ֑וֹ וּפָתַח֙ וְאֵ֣ין סֹגֵ֔ר וְסָגַ֖ר וְאֵ֥ין פֹּתֵֽחַ׃Is 22:22
I will lay the key of the house of David on his shoulder. He will open, and no one will shut. He will shut, and no one will open.
Is 22:22Is 22:22καὶ δώσω τὴν δόξαν Δαυιδ αὐτῷ καὶ ἄρξει καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ ἀντιλέγωνIs 22:22
And I will give him the glory of David; and he shall rule, and there shall be none to speak against him: and I will give him the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and there shall be none to shut; and he shall shut, and there shall be none to open.

I will lay the key of the house of David on his shoulder. He will open, and no one will shut. He will shut, and no one will open.
23Is 22:2323וּתְקַעְתִּ֥יו יָתֵ֖ד בְּמָק֣וֹם נֶאֱמָ֑ן וְהָיָ֛ה לְכִסֵּ֥א כָב֖וֹד לְבֵ֥ית אָבִֽיו׃Is 22:23
I will fasten him like a nail in a sure place. He will be for a throne of glory to his father’s house.

And I will make him a ruler in a sure place, and he shall be for a glorious throne of his father's house.
Is 22:23
I will fasten him like a nail in a sure place. He will be for a throne of glory to his father’s house.
24Is 22:2424וְתָל֨וּ עָלָ֜יו כֹּ֣ל ׀ כְּב֣וֹד בֵּית־אָבִ֗יו הַצֶּֽאֱצָאִים֙ וְהַצְּפִע֔וֹת כֹּ֖ל כְּלֵ֣י הַקָּטָ֑ן מִכְּלֵי֙ הָֽאַגָּנ֔וֹת וְעַ֖ד כָּל־כְּלֵ֥י הַנְּבָלִֽים׃Is 22:24
They will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, the offspring and the issue, every small vessel, from the cups even to all the pitchers.
Is 22:24Is 22:24καὶ ἔσται πεποιθὼς ἐπ’ αὐτὸν πᾶς ἔνδοξος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ μικροῦ ἕως μεγάλου καὶ ἔσονται ἐπικρεμάμενοι αὐτῷIs 22:24
And every one that is glorious in the house of his father shall trust in him, from the least to the greatest; and they shall depend upon him in that day.
Is 22:24

“In that day,” says Yahweh of Armies, “the nail that was fastened in a sure place will give way. It will be cut down, and fall. The burden that was on it will be cut off, for Yahweh has spoken it.”
Is 22:25Is 22:25ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τάδε λέγει κύριος σαβαωθ κινηθήσεται ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ ἐστηριγμένος ἐν τόπῳ πιστῷ καὶ πεσεῖται καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσεται ἡ δόξα ἡ ἐπ’ αὐτόν ὅτι κύριος ἐλάλησενIs 22:25
Thus saith the Lord of hosts, The man that is fastened in the sure place shall be removed and be taken away, and shall fall; and the glory that is upon him shall be utterly destroyed: for the Lord has spoken it.
