Friend at Midnight
5(Mk)(Mt)Lk 11:5¶Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἕξει φίλον, καὶ πορεύσεται πρὸς αὐτὸν μεσονυκτίου, καὶ εἴπῃ αὐτῷ, Φίλε, χρῆσόν μοι τρεῖς ἄρτους,5(Mk)(Mt)Lk 11:5¶He said to them, “Which of you, if you go to will have a friend and will go to him at midnight, and tell should say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,6(Mk)(Mt)Lk 11:6ἐπειδὴ { φίλος ⬪ φίλος μου } παρεγένετο ἐξ ὁδοῦ πρός με, καὶ οὐκ ἔχω ὃ παραθήσω αὐτῷ·

———
a Gr. καὶ is translated here as just to preserve the word order, but what is actually said is: He will certainly (γε) rise and give out of duty...if not also (καὶ) because he is a friend....
b Gr. ἀναίδεια is generally accepted to mean shamelessness, though its intent in this passage is not clear nor is it clear whose shamelessness it is. If taken to mean lacking shame, it presumably suggests audacity on the part of the friend knocking; but here it is being posited instead to mean lacking cause for shame on the part of the friend inside the house who will not dishonor himself by ignoring his friend in need.

Beelzebul / A House Divided

———
a Gr. ἐξίστημι. Lit. the crowds were outside themselves (ecstatic). In the parallel account in Mk 3:21—which lacks this specific exorcism—ἐξίστημι is used to describe not the crowd, but Jesus as being deranged/out of his mind. In Lk 11:14, this verb, referring to the crowd again, is changed to θαυμάζω, to marvel. For examples of ἐξίστημι and θαυμάζω used in conjunction, see Mk 6:51 and Acts 2:7.
