58Mk 14:58“We heard him say, ‘That I will destroyª this temple that is made with hands, and by in three days I will build another made without hands.’”

a The false witnesses are attributing a 1st person future active indicative singular καταλυσω to Jesus but This is NOT what Jesus said. See John 2:19: Jesus used the 2nd person plural imperative λυσατε meaning YOU DESTROY (in the command form)...and I WILL REBUILD εγερω. What Jesus actually said was a prophecy and we know from John 2:21 that Jesus was spaking of HIs Body.
Mt 26:61and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy tear down the temple of God, and to build it in three days.’”[a]
———
a The false witness is reflected in the verb tenses Jesus uses to describe (prophesy) what will happen to the temple.. both of His body (Jn 2:19) and the stone temple (Matt:24:2). In John 2:19 He is referring to His body and Jesus uses the 2person plural 1aorist active imperative: "YOU tear down this temple and in three days I will raise it" "λυσατε τον ναον" and in Matt 24:2 "oυ μη αφεθη ωδε λιθος επι λιθον ος ου καταλυθησεται" He uses a future θυ ind 3rd sing "there shall not be left here one stone upon another which will not be destroyed" In no case is Jesus claiming that HE will be the one tearing down the temple.

a Lit. You said. Jesus' answer is not That's right, but rather You haved claimed this, not I. (This is attested by Pilate's non-reaction to a similar reply in 27:11: You say.) His answer, therefore, is essentially the same as his reply to Peter in Matthew 16:17b: Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. with the enormous distinction being that it was the Jews' leaders who told Pilate and God who revealed the truth to Peter.
