a Lit. the ones from him. Variously translated as his relatives (NAB), his own people (NAS), his friends (KJV, WEB), those who belonged to him (his kinsmen) (AMP), but most often as his family (NET, NIV, NRSV, REB). They don't arrive until verse 31, a construct called a Marcan sandwich.
b NRSV interprets they as people, i.e., for people were saying. Contextually, they actually appears to be a forward referent to the scribes in 3:22.
c Gr. ἐξίστημι, usually meaning to amaze (or be amazed), but here being equated with demon-possessed in 3:22. Variously translated out of his mind (NAB, NET, NIV, NJB, NRSV, REB), beside himself (KJV), insane (WEB), lost his senses (NAS), and out of his mind (beside Himself, deranged) (AMP). (Note, however, the variant usage of ἐξίστημι in the parallel account in Mt 12:23.)
d Jn 7:5 says For not even his own brothers believed in him (NET). But here (in Mk 3:21) they are probably only racing to protect him from those calling him mad, not necessarily believing it themselves.
(Mt)(Lk)

a This is half of the "wisdom" gift that God gave Solomon see 3King 3:12/ 1Kings 3:12. The second half was "σοφην" this first half is prudence. Gk. φρόνιμος, prudent/thinking. Cf.
Lk 10:3Go your ways. Behold, I am sending you out as lambs sheep[a] among wolves.
———
a Or, perhaps, lambs. Gr. ἄρνας (ἀρήν). As to whether Lk 10:3 intends sheep or lambs, the usual word for lamb is the diminutive ἀρνίον; but the usual word for sheep is πρόβατον. Evidence for sheep is the parallel passage in Mt 10:16: I am sending you out as πρόβατα among wolves. Evidence against, is that Luke uses πρόβατον for sheep in 15:4, 6. Lk 10:3 is the only occurance of ἀρήν in the GNT.
