b Gk. πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας Κυρηνίου, happened first of (that is, prior to) Quirinus' hegemoning of Syria (see explanation). This census, which occurred at the time of Jesus' birth and therefore during the reign of Herod the Great (see Mt. 2:1, 15, 19, 22 and Lk. 1:5), who died in 4 BCE, is being differentiated from the Census of Quirinius (referenced in Acts 5:37), which occurred in 6 CE at the start of Quirinius' appointment as Legate of Syria after Augustus Caesar deposed Herod the Great's son Herod Archelaus for misrule (4 BCE-6 CE).

Birth of Jesus

———
a Gk. ἀνακλίνω.
b Gk. φάτνη. A φάτνη can be either a feeding trough or the stall itself in which animals are feed and sheltered (see Lk. 13:15). While the verse may be saying that Mary cradled her newborn baby in a trough, ἐν φάτνῃ may also be only saying that in the downstairs stable room of the house in which they were staying is where she gave birth and stayed with her baby.
c That is, no place for them in the main living quarters above the stable room (presumably of a relative's home), which were already occupied.
d Gk. ἐν τῷ καταλύματι. A κατάλυμα is a non-specific temporary accomodation and place to stay (not necessarily an inn or a guest room), and could refer generally to the home in which they were staying. Cf. εἰς τὸ κατάλυμα αὐτῆς in LXX 1 Kings 1:18 (1 Samuel 1:18).

a Gk. μάγος/μάγοι, Latin magus/magi, are probably court astronomers. The only other occurances of this word in the New Testament outside of Mt. 2 are in Acts 13:6 and 8. In the LXX this word only appears in Daniel, in connection with the court of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. (Traditionally, the magi are identified as three kings named Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, one for each of the three gifts in Mt. 2:11, and respectively representing either Persia, India, and Arabia; or Europe, Arabia, and Africa.)
b By specifying the magi as from the east, Matthew may be identifying them as from a particular, well-known and respected Eastern school of magi, placing them possibly in Babylon when they saw the star. (Source: BethlehemStar.net.)
