God and Mammon

1(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:1¶He also said to his disciples, “There was a certain rich man who had a manager. An accusation was made to him that this man was wasting his possessions.

2(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:2He called him, and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’
3(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:3Εἶπεν δὲ ἐν ἑαυτῷ ὁ οἰκονόμος, Τί ποιήσω, ὅτι ὁ κύριός μου ἀφαιρεῖται τὴν οἰκονομίαν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ; Σκάπτειν οὐκ ἰσχύω, ἐπαιτεῖν αἰσχύνομαι.3(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:3“The manager said within himself, ‘What will I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management position from me? I don’t have strength to dig. I am ashamed to beg.4(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:4Ἔγνων τί ποιήσω, ἵνα, ὅταν μετασταθῶ { τῆς ⬪ ἐκ τῆς } οἰκονομίας, δέξωνταί με εἰς τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν.

8(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:8Καὶ ἐπῄνεσεν ὁ κύριος τὸν οἰκονόμον τῆς ἀδικίας ὅτι φρονίμως ἐποίησεν· ὅτι οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου φρονιμώτεροι ὑπὲρ τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ φωτὸς εἰς τὴν γενεὰν τὴν ἑαυτῶν εἰσιν.8(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:8His The lord commended (couldn't help but) admire[a] the dishonest manager for (his) mischief[b] because he had done acted wisely ingeniously, for the children of this world age are, in their own generation, wiser more ingenious in their own generation than (are) the children of the light (in theirs).[c]
———
a Gk. ἐπαινέω, to praise.
b Gk. τῆς ἀδικίας, of the wrongdoing. This is usually translated as an adjective modifying τὸν οἰκονόμον, e.g., the dishonest manager, instead of as a genitive noun. However, see Smyth 1405: With verbs of emotion the genitive denotes the cause. ...τὸν ξένον δίκαιον αἰνέσαι προθῡμίᾱς it is right to praise the stranger for his zeal...
c Is this: The children of this age demonstrate more drive for the things of this age than do the children of the light for the things of the light?

9(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:9I tell say to you also, make for yourselves friends by means of unrighteous from the mammon of wrongdoing,[a][b] so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal tents.[c]
———
a Gk. Ἀδικία, wrongdoing, is usually translated here (and in 16:8) as an adjective, like ἄδικος in 16:11, e.g., the unrighteous mammon, instead of as a genitive noun.
b The meaning of "make friends from the mammon of wrongdoing [or unrighteousness]" must equate to the admonition in 16:11 to be trustworthy with unrighteous mammon.
c Can this be a question, i.e.: Do you make friends for yourselves from the mammon of wrongdoing/unrighteousness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the eternal tents?
10(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:10Ὁ πιστὸς ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ καὶ ἐν πολλῷ πιστός ἐστιν, καὶ ὁ ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ ἄδικος καὶ ἐν πολλῷ ἄδικός ἐστιν.10(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:10He The one who is faithful trustworthy in a very little is faithful also trustworthy in much., He and the one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.11(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:11Εἰ οὖν ἐν τῷ ἀδίκῳ μαμωνᾷ πιστοὶ οὐκ ἐγένεσθε, τὸ ἀληθινὸν τίς ὑμῖν πιστεύσει;11(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:11If therefore you have not been faithful trustworthy in the unrighteous mammon,[a] who will commit to your entrust to you the true[a] riches?[b]
———
a Gk. τῷ ἀδίῳ μαμωνᾷ; in contrast to ἀδικία in 16:11, ἄδικοςis truly an adjective.
b That is, the righteous mammon.
c That mammon may be unrighteous is not justification to handle it dishonestly.
12(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:12Καὶ εἰ ἐν τῷ ἀλλοτρίῳ πιστοὶ οὐκ ἐγένεσθε, τὸ ὑμέτερον τίς ὑμῖν δώσει;12(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:12If you have not been faithful trustworthy in that which is (what belongs to) another’s, who will give you that which what is your own?[a]

a That is, who will be trustworthy toward you in return with what is yours?

13(Mk)Mt 6:24“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon money.[a]
———
a Gk. μαμωνᾶς, mammon, wealth.
Lk 16:13No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and mammon.”

Lovers of Money

15(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:15Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ δικαιοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὁ δὲ θεὸς γινώσκει τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν· ὅτι τὸ ἐν ἀνθρώποις ὑψηλὸν βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ.15(Mk)(Mt)Lk 16:15He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts. For that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

The Law and the Prophets Were Until John

———
a Gk. κεραία, a tiny projection.
Lk 16:17But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tiny pen stroke of a pen[a] in of the law to fall.

a Gk. κεραία, a tiny projection, e.g., a serif.
