Rv 2:14

But I ~~have~~ hold a few (things) against you, ~~because~~ that you have there (some) who ~~hold~~ are embracing the teaching of Balaam^[a], who taught Balak^[b] to throw a stumbling block before the ~~children~~ sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.^[c]

So the plague was stopped from the Israelites.... 25:15 The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi daughter of Zur. He was a leader over the people of a clan of Midian. 25:16 Then the Lord spoke to Moses: 25:17 Bring trouble to the Midianites, and destroy them, 25:18 because they bring trouble to you by their treachery with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague that happened as a result of Peor (NET).

^a sexual immorality is an interpretive and perhaps misleading translation for "porneias" because the word is used consistently to also refer to the unfaithfulness of those who depart from the precision of God's word... as in Isaiah 1:21 when God asks "how the faithful city becomes a harlot" the word is "porno" polis.. so porneias needs to be kept in context of faithfulness not sex.

Beale: ἀνατελεῖ ἄστρον (a star will arise) from Numbers 24 probably inspired τὸν ἀστέρα τὸν πρωϊνόν (the morning star) in Rev. 2:28, since ἀνατολή can mean sunrise or dawn. Therefore, the morning star is a symbol associated with the messianic reign; similarly, the star in Num. 24:17 is interpreted as a metaphor for king by the Targums, probably because it is in synonymous parallelism with scepter. The application here of this emblem to believers indicates that they will participate in this reign if they overcome. This idea is enhanced from the fact the the morning star (Veus) was a symbol of sovereignty in the ancient world and especially in Rome. Roman emperors claimed to be descended from the goddess Venus, Roman generals built temples dedicated to the star, and it was a sign carried on the standards of the Roman legions. If this is also part of the thought, then the allusion to Numbers has been called forth in order to emphasize that Christ is the true world sovereign in contrast to the claims of evil world empires like Rome.
