^a Or, perhaps, lambs. Gr. ἄρνας (ἀρήν). As to whether Lk 10:3 intends sheep or lambs, the usual word for lamb is the diminutive ἀρνίον; but the usual word for sheep is πρόβατον. Evidence for sheep is the parallel passage in Mt 10:16: I am sending you out as πρόβατα among wolves. Evidence against, is that Luke uses πρόβατον for sheep in 15:4, 6. Lk 10:3 is the only occurance of ἀρήν in the GNT.
