^a πρεσβύτερος, a more senior dignitary, one who effects because of his distinguishment.

^b ἐκλεκτή, (adj. fem.) addressed out; (gen.) selected; (NT) reasoned with and persuaded out (of the world system); hence, CHOICE (for God's purposes).

^c κυρία, a woman wielding control to make things happen; in this epistle, she personifies a collective group.

^d τέκνα, in the frame of this epistle, is not children, but disciples who have been crafted by teachers. They have a craft they have proficiency in (as opposed to inadequately skilled τεκνία).

^e i.e. the Holy Spirit; in Man this honest, raw reality is lacking, obscured, or diverted by thoughts, reasonings, and emotions from self, other people, and the world system.

^a The Truth abiding in us is developing us: eventually, we come to recognize God's still, small voice, then grow in ability to heed Him over all; this requires devoting attention to studying (hearing and reading analytically) while building working conceptual models -- fitly, from analytical bits -- to put to practice in our lives.

^b Seeing the Son and being saved is the first step into Life; recognizing and following The Truth is an ongoing Life Journey (cf. 3John 7).

^c είς τὸν αἰῶνα, unto all time itself, which is a created thing we exist in, like fish in water.

^a RP: παραβαίνω, to walk away. NA/UBS: προάγω, to precede (here, to move on? BDAG s.v. προάγω 2, 2J 9: anyone who goes too far...). Whether leaving (backsliding) or getting ahead of Christ's teaching (prematurity, especially in so-called church leaders building THEIR 'ministries'), the results are similar: dead works of the flesh, not by the Spirit; the Father's development of the Son in an individual is an incremental, line upon line, precept upon precept process that takes time -- it's gradual.

^b continuing in Christ's teaching involves treasuring it up, not letting it go in one ear and out the other.

^c lit. continuing in Christ's teaching -- actively, not merely tolerating, awaiting, or relying on others (e.g. church leaders); this brings true spiritual development, growth by the Spirit through the Word's watering.
