in the mind, thus conceptual or non-literal. It is effectively the same as putting
scare quotesaround guileless [making it an improper adverb (that is, a neu acc adjective) modifying ἄδολον rather than γάλα]. Variously translated
spiritual(AMP, ESV, NRSV, NAB, NET, NIV, NJB, REB),
of the word(KJV, NAS), and
rational(DRB) [and modifying γάλα]; but see 2:4 and 2:5 for similar usage of an explicit qualifier of figurativeness. BDAG:
λ. [in 1 Pt 2:2] means spiritual not only in the sense of πνευματικός, but also in contrast toliteral, w. the mng.metaphorical.
pure(ESV, NAB, NAS, NET, NIV, NRSV, REB),
unadulterated(NJB),
pure (unadulterated)(AMP),
sincere(KJV),and
without guile(DRB). In relation to 2:3, to taste is to do, so too the milk that feeds you is not something received, but something you do, i.e., how we as
babiesare to live. Guileless or pure milk is uncorrupt actions, the opposite of the vices listed in 2:1.
Γεύσασαθε καὶ ἴδετε ὅτι χρηστὸς ὁ Κύριος....To
tastethe Lord means to seek his help; cry out to him; follow him; take shelter in him; and see what he does:
I sought the Lord’s help and he answered me; / he delivered me from all my fears. / Those who look to him for help are happy; / their faces are not ashamed. / This oppressed man cried out and the Lord heard; / he saved him from all his troubles. / The Lord’s angel camps around / the Lord’s loyal followers and delivers them. / Taste and see that the Lord is good! / How blessed is the one who takes shelter in him!(Ps 34:4-8 NET). [Psalm numbers in the LXX and Masoretic text differ beginning with Ps 10.]
Livingsimply means as opposed to an actual stone. It is being used effectively in the same way as saying
figuratively speakingto be explicity non-literal (similar to the use of λογικός in 2:2).
livingis just a way of being explicitly non-literal, i.e.,
You also, figuratively speaking, are stones....
chock-full ofrather than simply
contains,i.e., emphasizing that the stone theme is recurrent, as illustrated by the three quotes in 2:6, 2:7, and 2:8?
day of oversight (overseeing); freq. translated
day of visitation[of an overseer?] (fr. ἐπισκέπτομαι [to visit] or ἐπισκοπέω [to oversee]?). Is 10:3 LXX:
Καὶ τί ποιήσουσιν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρα τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς....NET:
Those who enact unjust policies are as good as dead, / those who are always instituting unfair regulations, / to keep the poor from getting fair treatment, / and to deprive the oppressed among my people of justice, / so they can steal what widows own, / and loot what belongs to orphans. / What will you do on judgment day, / when destruction arrives from a distant place?(Is 10:1-3a). Ex. 32:34 LXX:
...ᾗ δ’ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπισκέπτωμαι ἐπάξω ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς τὴν ἁμαρτίαν αὐτῶν[...and in the day when I shall visit I will bring upon them their sin (Brenton)]. see Psalm 105:4, Isaiah 10:3, Exodus 32:34, LUKE 19:44, Jeremiah 10:15
Οὖτος τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν φέρει....
...τῷ μώλωπι αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς ἰάθημεν.
Healedwould appear to mean having whatever satisfaction or atonement is required for sins and rebellious deeds be made, here by substitutionary punishment:
But he lifted up our illnesses, / he carried our pain; / even though we thought he was being punished, / attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. / He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, / crushed because of our sins; / he endured punishment that made us well; / because of his wounds we have been healed(Is 53:4-5 NET). (In a not-quite-the-same way, on the annual Day of Atonement [Lv 16:1-34] a scapegoat—in addition to blood sacrifices—bears away all the sins of the people into the wilderness:
Aaron is to lay his two hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the Israelites and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins.... The goat is to bear on itself all their iniquities [[Lv 16:21-22 NET].)Καὶ λήψεται ὁ χίμαρος ἐφ’ ἑαυτῷ τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν(LXX)] into an inaccessible land, so he is to send the goat away in the wilderness
...ὡς πρόβατα ἐπλανήθημεν....
