a The Lion of Judah is a symbol of the Jewish nation, originally the emblem for the tribe of Judah. See Gn. 49:9: You are a lion’s cub, Judah, / from the prey, my son, you have gone up. / He crouches and lies down like a lion; / like a lioness – who will rouse him? (NET). (Also Hos. 5:9-14: 5:9 Ephraim will be ruined in the day of judgment! / What I am declaring to the tribes of Israel will certainly take place...! / 5:14 I will be like a lion to Ephraim, / like a young lion to the house of Judah. / I myself will tear them to pieces, / then I will carry them off, and no one will be able to rescue them! [NET]. And Mi. 5:2-8: 5:2 (5:1) As for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, / seemingly insignificant among the clans of Judah – / from you a king will emerge who will rule over Israel on my behalf, / one whose origins are in the distant past. / 5:3 So the Lord will hand the people of Israel over to their enemies / until the time when the woman in labor gives birth. / Then the rest of the king’s countrymen will return / to be reunited with the people of Israel. / 5:4 He will assume his post and shepherd the people by the Lord’s strength, / by the sovereign authority of the Lord his God. / They will live securely, for at that time he will be honored / even in the distant regions of the earth.... / 5:8 Those survivors from Jacob will live among the nations, / in the midst of many peoples. / They will be like a lion among the animals of the forest, / like a young lion among the flocks of sheep, / which attacks when it passes through; / it rips its prey and there is no one to stop it [NET].)
b Is. 11:1-10: 11:1 A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s root stock, / a bud will sprout from his roots.... / 11:10 At that time a root from Jesse will stand like a signal flag for the nations. Nations will look to him for guidance, and his residence will be majestic (NET). Quoted in Rom. 15:12. Also Is. 53:2: He sprouted up like a twig before God, / like a root out of parched soil; / he had no stately form or majesty that might catch our attention, / no special appearance that we should want to follow him (NET). a The Lion of Judah is a symbol of the Jewish nation, originally the emblem for the tribe of Judah. See Gn. 49:9: You are a lion’s cub, Judah, / from the prey, my son, you have gone up. / He crouches and lies down like a lion; / like a lioness – who will rouse him? (NET). Also Hos. (NET). / They will be like a lion among the animals of the forest, / like a young lion among the flocks of sheep, / which attacks when it passes through; / it rips its prey and there is no one to stop it (NET).
b Is. 11:1-10 (also quoted in Rom 15:12): 11:1 A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s root stock, / a bud will sprout from his roots.... / 11:10 At that time a root from Jesse will stand like a signal flag for the nations. Nations will look to him for guidance, and his residence will be majestic (NET).
