If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee:

consider diligently what is before you;

consider diligently what is before you;

and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such meats: but if thou art very insatiable,

desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life.

5Prv 23:55ἐὰν ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτόν οὐδαμοῦ φανεῖται κατεσκεύασται γὰρ αὐτῷ πτέρυγες ὥσπερ ἀετοῦ καὶ ὑποστρέφει εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ προεστηκότος αὐτοῦPrv 23:5
If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master.

Prv 23:5
Why do you set your eyes on that which is not?
For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats:

Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye,

so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him:

for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words.

The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up,
and lose your good words.

Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words.

Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:

for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.

Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.

For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed.

Indeed surely there is a future hope,
and your hope will not be cut off.

21Prv 23:2121πᾶς γὰρ μέθυσος καὶ πορνοκόπος πτωχεύσει καὶ ἐνδύσεται διερρηγμένα καὶ ῥακώδη πᾶς ὑπνώδηςPrv 23:21
for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.

Hearken, my son, to thy father which begot thee, and despise not thy mother because she is grown old.

A righteous father brings up his children well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son.

The father of the righteous has great joy.
Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.

Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad.

27Prv 23:2727πίθος γὰρ τετρημένος ἐστὶν ἀλλότριος οἶκος καὶ φρέαρ στενὸν ἀλλότριονPrv 23:27
For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow.
Prv 23:27
For a prostitute is a deep pit;
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

For a prostitute is a deep pit;
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28Prv 23:2828οὗτος γὰρ συντόμως ἀπολεῖται καὶ πᾶς παράνομος ἀναλωθήσεταιPrv 23:28
For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.

and increases the unfaithful among men.

Who has woe? who trouble? who has quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who has bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?

Who has strife?
Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises?
Who has bloodshot eyes?

Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has strife?
Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises?
Who has bloodshot eyes?
30Prv 23:3030οὐ τῶν ἐγχρονιζόντων ἐν οἴνοις οὐ τῶν ἰχνευόντων ποῦ πότοι γίνονταιPrv 23:30
Are not those of them that stay long at wine? are not those of them that haunt the places where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse with them openly.

Those who stay long at the wine;
those who go to seek out mixed wine.

Those who stay long at the wine;

31Prv 23:3131μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ ἀλλὰ ὁμιλεῖτε ἀνθρώποις δικαίοις καὶ ὁμιλεῖτε ἐν περιπάτοις ἐὰν γὰρ εἰς τὰς φιάλας καὶ τὰ ποτήρια δῷς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου ὕστερον περιπατήσεις γυμνότερος ὑπέρουPrv 23:31
For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.

when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly.

Don’t look at the wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly.
32Prv 23:3232τὸ δὲ ἔσχατον ὥσπερ ὑπὸ ὄφεως πεπληγὼς ἐκτείνεται καὶ ὥσπερ ὑπὸ κεράστου διαχεῖται αὐτῷ ὁ ἰόςPrv 23:32
But at last such a one stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.

In the end, it bites like a snake,
and poisons like a viper.

33Prv 23:3333οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὅταν ἴδωσιν ἀλλοτρίαν τὸ στόμα σου τότε λαλήσει σκολιάPrv 23:33
Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things.
Prv 23:33
Your eyes will see strange things,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.

Your eyes will see strange things,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34Prv 23:3434καὶ κατακείσῃ ὥσπερ ἐν καρδίᾳ θαλάσσης καὶ ὥσπερ κυβερνήτης ἐν πολλῷ κλύδωνιPrv 23:34
And thou shalt lie as in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot in a great storm.

Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea,
or as he who lies on top of the rigging:
Prv 23:34Prv 23:34וְ֭הָיִיתָ כְּשֹׁכֵ֣ב בְּלֶב־יָ֑ם וּ֝כְשֹׁכֵ֗ב בְּרֹ֣אשׁ חִבֵּֽל׃Prv 23:34
Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea,

35Prv 23:3535ἐρεῖς δέ τύπτουσίν με καὶ οὐκ ἐπόνεσα καὶ ἐνέπαιξάν μοι ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ᾔδειν πότε ὄρθρος ἔσται ἵνα ἐλθὼν ζητήσω μεθ’ ὧν συνελεύσομαιPrv 23:35
And thou shalt say, They smote me, and I was not pained; and they mocked me, and I knew it not: when will it be morning, that I may go and seek those with whom I may go in company?

“They hit me, and I was not hurt!
They beat me, and I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up? I can do it again.
I can find another.”
