And David fled from Navath in Rama, and comes into the presence of Jonathan; and he said, What have I done, and what is my fault, and wherein have I sinned before thy father, that he seeks my life?

¶David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”
1Sm 20:11Sm 20:1וַיִּבְרַ֣ח דָּוִ֔ד ‏{ מנוות מִנָּי֖וֹת }‏ בָּרָמָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֞א וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן מֶ֤ה עָשִׂ֙יתִי֙ מֶֽה־עֲוֹנִ֤י וּמֶֽה־חַטָּאתִי֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אָבִ֔יךָ כִּ֥י מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־נַפְשִֽׁי׃

1Sm 20:1
¶David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”
21Sm 20:22καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ιωναθαν μηδαμῶς σοι οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃς ἰδοὺ οὐ μὴ ποιήσῃ ὁ πατήρ μου ῥῆμα μέγα ἢ μικρὸν καὶ οὐκ ἀποκαλύψει τὸ ὠτίον μου καὶ τί ὅτι κρύψει ὁ πατήρ μου τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστιν τοῦτο1Kgs 20:2
And Jonathan said to him, Far be it from thee: thou shalt not die: behold, my father will not do any thing great or small without discovering it to me; and why should my father hide this matter from me? This thing is not so.

¶He said to him, “Far from it; you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.”

Ketib: לו־עשה ⬪ Qere: לֹֽא־יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה
1Sm 20:2
¶He said to him, “Far from it; you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.”
31Sm 20:33καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Δαυιδ τῷ Ιωναθαν καὶ εἶπεν γινώσκων οἶδεν ὁ πατήρ σου ὅτι εὕρηκα χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου καὶ εἶπεν μὴ γνώτω τοῦτο Ιωναθαν μὴ οὐ βούληται ἀλλὰ ζῇ κύριος καὶ ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου ὅτι καθὼς εἶπον ἐμπέπλησται ἀνὰ μέσον μου καὶ τοῦ θανάτου1Kgs 20:3
And David answered Jonathan, and said, Thy father knows surely that I have found grace in thy sight, and he said, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he refuse his consent: but as the Lord lives and thy soul lives, as I said, the space is filled up between me and death.

¶David swore moreover, and said, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, ‘Don’t let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved:’ but truly as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
1Sm 20:31Sm 20:3וַיִּשָּׁבַ֨ע ע֜וֹד דָּוִ֗ד וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יָדֹ֨עַ יָדַ֜ע אָבִ֗יךָ כִּֽי־מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ וַיֹּ֛אמֶר אַל־יֵֽדַע־זֹ֥את יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן פֶּן־יֵֽעָצֵ֑ב וְאוּלָ֗ם חַי־יְהוָה֙ וְחֵ֣י נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ כִּ֣י כְפֶ֔שַׂע בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵ֥ין הַמָּֽוֶת׃1Sm 20:3
¶David swore moreover, and said, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, ‘Don’t let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved:’ but truly as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
41Sm 20:44καὶ εἶπεν Ιωναθαν πρὸς Δαυιδ τί ἐπιθυμεῖ ἡ ψυχή σου καὶ τί ποιήσω σοι1Kgs 20:4
And Jonathan said to David, What does thy soul desire, and what shall I do for thee.
1Sm 20:4
¶Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.”
1Sm 20:41Sm 20:4וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד מַה־תֹּאמַ֥ר נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃ פ 1Sm 20:4
¶Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.”
51Sm 20:55καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ πρὸς Ιωναθαν ἰδοὺ δὴ νεομηνία αὔριον καὶ ἐγὼ καθίσας οὐ καθήσομαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως φαγεῖν καὶ ἐξαποστελεῖς με καὶ κρυβήσομαι ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ ἕως δείλης1Kgs 20:5
And David said to Jonathan, Behold, to-morrow is the new moon, and I shall not on any account sit down to eat, but thou shalt let me go, and I will hide in the plain till the evening.

¶David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to dine with the king; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at evening.
1Sm 20:51Sm 20:5וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן הִֽנֵּה־חֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ מָחָ֔ר וְאָנֹכִ֛י יָשֹׁב־אֵשֵׁ֥ב עִם־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֶאֱכ֑וֹל וְשִׁלַּחְתַּ֙נִי֙ וְנִסְתַּרְתִּ֣י בַשָּׂדֶ֔ה עַ֖ד הָעֶ֥רֶב הַשְּׁלִשִֽׁית׃1Sm 20:5
¶David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to dine with the king; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at evening.
61Sm 20:66ἐὰν ἐπισκεπτόμενος ἐπισκέψηταί με ὁ πατήρ σου καὶ ἐρεῖς παραιτούμενος παρῃτήσατο ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ Δαυιδ δραμεῖν ἕως εἰς Βηθλεεμ τὴν πόλιν αὐτοῦ ὅτι θυσία τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκεῖ ὅλῃ τῇ φυλῇ1Kgs 20:6
And if thy father do in anywise enquire for me, then shalt thou say, David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethleem his city, for there is there, a yearly sacrifice for all the family.

If your father miss me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city; for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’
1Sm 20:61Sm 20:6אִם־פָּקֹ֥ד יִפְקְדֵ֖נִי אָבִ֑יךָ וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ נִשְׁאֹל֩ נִשְׁאַ֨ל מִמֶּ֤נִּי דָוִד֙ לָרוּץ֙ בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם עִיר֔וֹ כִּ֣י זֶ֧בַח הַיָּמִ֛ים שָׁ֖ם לְכָל־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָֽה׃1Sm 20:6
If your father miss me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city; for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’
71Sm 20:77ἐὰν τάδε εἴπῃ ἀγαθῶς εἰρήνη τῷ δούλῳ σου καὶ ἐὰν σκληρῶς ἀποκριθῇ σοι γνῶθι ὅτι συντετέλεσται ἡ κακία παρ’ αὐτοῦ1Kgs 20:7
If he shall say thus, Well, —all is safe for thy servant: but if he shall answer harshly to thee, know that evil is determined by him.
1Sm 20:7
If he says, ‘It is well;’ your servant shall have peace: but if he be angry, then know that evil is determined by him.
1Sm 20:71Sm 20:7אִם־כֹּ֥ה יֹאמַ֛ר ט֖וֹב שָׁל֣וֹם לְעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וְאִם־חָרֹ֤ה יֶֽחֱרֶה֙ ל֔וֹ דַּ֕ע כִּֽי־כָלְתָ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ה מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃1Sm 20:7
If he says, ‘It is well;’ your servant shall have peace: but if he be angry, then know that evil is determined by him.
81Sm 20:88καὶ ποιήσεις ἔλεος μετὰ τοῦ δούλου σου ὅτι εἰσήγαγες εἰς διαθήκην κυρίου τὸν δοῦλόν σου μετὰ σεαυτοῦ καὶ εἰ ἔστιν ἀδικία ἐν τῷ δούλῳ σου θανάτωσόν με σύ καὶ ἕως τοῦ πατρός σου ἵνα τί οὕτως εἰσάγεις με1Kgs 20:8
And thou shalt deal mercifully with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thyself: and if there is iniquity in thy servant, slay me thyself; but why dost thou thus bring me to thy father?

Therefore deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you: but if there be in me iniquity, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?”
1Sm 20:81Sm 20:8וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ חֶ֙סֶד֙ עַל־עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ כִּ֚י בִּבְרִ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה הֵבֵ֥אתָ אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֖ עִמָּ֑ךְ וְאִם־יֶשׁ־בִּ֤י עָוֹן֙ הֲמִיתֵ֣נִי אַ֔תָּה וְעַד־אָבִ֖יךָ לָמָּה־זֶּ֥ה תְבִיאֵֽנִי׃ פ 1Sm 20:8
Therefore deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you: but if there be in me iniquity, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?”
91Sm 20:99καὶ εἶπεν Ιωναθαν μηδαμῶς σοι ὅτι ἐὰν γινώσκων γνῶ ὅτι συντετέλεσται ἡ κακία παρὰ τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ σέ καὶ ἐὰν μή εἰς τὰς πόλεις σου ἐγὼ ἀπαγγελῶ σοι1Kgs 20:9
And Jonathan said, That be far from thee: for if I surely know that evil is determined by my father to come upon thee, although it should not be against thy cities, I will tell thee.

¶Jonathan said, “Far be it from you; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come on you, then wouldn’t I tell you that?”
1Sm 20:91Sm 20:9וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן חָלִ֣ילָה לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֣י ׀ אִם־יָדֹ֣עַ אֵדַ֗ע כִּֽי־כָלְתָ֨ה הָרָעָ֜ה מֵעִ֤ם אָבִי֙ לָב֣וֹא עָלֶ֔יךָ וְלֹ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ אַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃ ס 1Sm 20:9
¶Jonathan said, “Far be it from you; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come on you, then wouldn’t I tell you that?”
101Sm 20:1010καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ πρὸς Ιωναθαν τίς ἀπαγγελεῖ μοι ἐὰν ἀποκριθῇ ὁ πατήρ σου σκληρῶς1Kgs 20:10
And David said to Jonathan, Who can tell me if thy father should answer roughly?
1Sm 20:10
¶Then David said to Jonathan, “Who shall tell me if perchance your father answers you roughly?”
1Sm 20:101Sm 20:10וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן מִ֖י יַגִּ֣יד לִ֑י א֛וֹ מַה־יַּעַנְךָ֥ אָבִ֖יךָ קָשָֽׁה׃ ס 1Sm 20:10
¶Then David said to Jonathan, “Who shall tell me if perchance your father answers you roughly?”
111Sm 20:1111καὶ εἶπεν Ιωναθαν πρὸς Δαυιδ πορεύου καὶ μένε εἰς ἀγρόν καὶ ἐκπορεύονται ἀμφότεροι εἰς ἀγρόν1Kgs 20:11
And Jonathan said to David, Go, and abide in the field. And they went out both into the field.

¶Jonathan said to David, “Come, and let us go out into the field.” They both went out into the field.
1Sm 20:111Sm 20:11וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד לְכָ֖ה וְנֵצֵ֣א הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיֵּצְא֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ ס 1Sm 20:11
¶Jonathan said to David, “Come, and let us go out into the field.” They both went out into the field.
121Sm 20:1212καὶ εἶπεν Ιωναθαν πρὸς Δαυιδ κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ οἶδεν ὅτι ἀνακρινῶ τὸν πατέρα μου ὡς ἂν ὁ καιρὸς τρισσῶς καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀγαθὸν ᾖ περὶ Δαυιδ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποστείλω πρὸς σὲ εἰς ἀγρόν1Kgs 20:12
And Jonathan said to David, the Lord God of Israel knows that I will sound my father as I have an opportunity, three several times, and, behold, if good should be determined concerning David, and I do not send to thee to the field,
1Sm 20:12
Jonathan said to David, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, be witness: when I have sounded my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there be good toward David, shall I not then send to you, and disclose it to you?
1Sm 20:121Sm 20:12וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּֽי־אֶחְקֹ֣ר אֶת־אָבִ֗י כָּעֵ֤ת ׀ מָחָר֙ הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֔ית וְהִנֵּה־ט֖וֹב אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד וְלֹֽא־אָז֙ אֶשְׁלַ֣ח אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְגָלִ֖יתִי אֶת־אָזְנֶֽךָ׃1Sm 20:12
Jonathan said to David, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, be witness: when I have sounded my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there be good toward David, shall I not then send to you, and disclose it to you?
131Sm 20:1313τάδε ποιήσαι ὁ θεὸς τῷ Ιωναθαν καὶ τάδε προσθείη ὅτι ἀνοίσω τὰ κακὰ ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ ἀποκαλύψω τὸ ὠτίον σου καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ σε καὶ ἀπελεύσῃ εἰς εἰρήνην καὶ ἔσται κύριος μετὰ σοῦ καθὼς ἦν μετὰ τοῦ πατρός μου1Kgs 20:13
God do so to Jonathan and more also: as I shall also report the evil to thee, and make it known to thee, and I will let thee go; and thou shalt depart in peace, and the Lord shall be with thee, as he was with my father.

Yahweh do so to Jonathan, and more also, should it please my father to do you evil, if I don’t disclose it to you, and send you away, that you may go in peace: and Yahweh be with you, as he has been with my father.
1Sm 20:131Sm 20:13כֹּֽה־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ יְהוָ֨ה לִֽיהוֹנָתָ֜ן וְכֹ֣ה יֹסִ֗יף כִּֽי־יֵיטִ֨ב אֶל־אָבִ֤י אֶת־הָֽרָעָה֙ עָלֶ֔יךָ וְגָלִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־אָזְנֶ֔ךָ וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֖יךָ וְהָלַכְתָּ֣ לְשָׁל֑וֹם וִיהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה עִם־אָבִֽי׃1Sm 20:13
Yahweh do so to Jonathan, and more also, should it please my father to do you evil, if I don’t disclose it to you, and send you away, that you may go in peace: and Yahweh be with you, as he has been with my father.
141Sm 20:1414καὶ μὲν ἔτι μου ζῶντος καὶ ποιήσεις ἔλεος μετ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐὰν θανάτῳ ἀποθάνω1Kgs 20:14
And if indeed I continue to live, then shalt thou deal mercifully with me; and if I indeed die,

You shall not only while yet I live show me the loving kindness of Yahweh, that I not die;
1Sm 20:141Sm 20:14וְלֹ֖א אִם־עוֹדֶ֣נִּי חָ֑י וְלֹֽא־תַעֲשֶׂ֧ה עִמָּדִ֛י חֶ֥סֶד יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א אָמֽוּת׃1Sm 20:14
You shall not only while yet I live show me the loving kindness of Yahweh, that I not die;
151Sm 20:1515οὐκ ἐξαρεῖς ἔλεός σου ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου μου ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ εἰ μὴ ἐν τῷ ἐξαίρειν κύριον τοὺς ἐχθροὺς Δαυιδ ἕκαστον ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς15
1Sm 20:15
but also you shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever; no, not when Yahweh has cut off the enemies of David everyone from the surface of the earth.”
1Sm 20:151Sm 20:15וְלֹֽא־תַכְרִ֧ת אֶֽת־חַסְדְּךָ֛ מֵעִ֥ם בֵּיתִ֖י עַד־עוֹלָ֑ם וְלֹ֗א בְּהַכְרִ֤ת יְהוָה֙ אֶת־אֹיְבֵ֣י דָוִ֔ד אִ֕ישׁ מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃1Sm 20:15
but also you shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever; no, not when Yahweh has cut off the enemies of David everyone from the surface of the earth.”
161Sm 20:1616ἐξαρθῆναι τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Ιωναθαν ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου Δαυιδ καὶ ἐκζητήσαι κύριος ἐχθροὺς τοῦ Δαυιδ1Kgs 20:16
thou shalt not withdraw thy mercy from my house for ever: and if thou doest not, when the Lord cuts off the enemies of David each from the face of the earth, should it happen that the name of Jonathan be discovered by the house of David, then let the Lord seek out the enemies of David.
1Sm 20:16
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “Yahweh will require it at the hand of David’s enemies.”
1Sm 20:161Sm 20:16וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן עִם־בֵּ֣ית דָּוִ֑ד וּבִקֵּ֣שׁ יְהוָ֔ה מִיַּ֖ד אֹיְבֵ֥י דָוִֽד׃1Sm 20:16
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “Yahweh will require it at the hand of David’s enemies.”
171Sm 20:1717καὶ προσέθετο ἔτι Ιωναθαν ὀμόσαι τῷ Δαυιδ ὅτι ἠγάπησεν ψυχὴν ἀγαπῶντος αὐτόν1Kgs 20:17
And Jonathan swore yet again to David, because he loved the soul of him that loved him.
1Sm 20:17
Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
1Sm 20:171Sm 20:17וַיּ֤וֹסֶף יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ לְהַשְׁבִּ֣יעַ אֶת־דָּוִ֔ד בְּאַהֲבָת֖וֹ אֹת֑וֹ כִּֽי־אַהֲבַ֥ת נַפְשׁ֖וֹ אֲהֵבֽוֹ׃ ס 1Sm 20:17
Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
181Sm 20:1818καὶ εἶπεν Ιωναθαν αὔριον νουμηνία καὶ ἐπισκεπήσῃ ὅτι ἐπισκεπήσεται καθέδρα σου1Kgs 20:18
And Jonathan said, To-morrow is the new moon, and thou wilt be enquired for, because thy seat will be observed as vacant.
1Sm 20:18
Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the new moon: and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
1Sm 20:181Sm 20:18וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן מָחָ֣ר חֹ֑דֶשׁ וְנִפְקַ֕דְתָּ כִּ֥י יִפָּקֵ֖ד מוֹשָׁבֶֽךָ׃1Sm 20:18
Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the new moon: and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
191Sm 20:1919καὶ τρισσεύσεις καὶ ἐπισκέψῃ καὶ ἥξεις εἰς τὸν τόπον σου οὗ ἐκρύβης ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἐργασίμῃ καὶ καθήσῃ παρὰ τὸ εργαβ ἐκεῖνο1Kgs 20:19
And thou shalt stay three days, and watch an opportunity, and shalt come to thy place where thou mayest hide thyself in the day of thy business, and thou shalt wait by that ergab.

When you have stayed three days, you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you did hide yourself when the business was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.

When you have stayed three days, you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you did hide yourself when the business was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.

So David hides himself in the field, and the new month arrives, and the king comes to the table to eat.

And it came to pass on the morrow, on the second day of the month, that the place of David was empty; and Saul said to Jonathan his son, Why has not the son of Jessae attended both yesterday and today at the table?

And Jonathan answered Saul, and said to him, David asked leave of me to go as far as Bethleem his city;

291Sm 20:2929καὶ εἶπεν ἐξαπόστειλον δή με ὅτι θυσία τῆς φυλῆς ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ ἐνετείλαντο πρός με οἱ ἀδελφοί μου καὶ νῦν εἰ εὕρηκα χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου διασωθήσομαι δὴ καὶ ὄψομαι τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου διὰ τοῦτο οὐ παραγέγονεν ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τοῦ βασιλέως1Kgs 20:29
and he said, Let me go, I pray thee, for we have a family sacrifice in the city, and my brethren have sent for me; and now, if I have found grace in thine eyes, I will even go over and see my brethren: therefore he is not present at the table of the king.

He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city. My brother has commanded me to be there. Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”

And Saul was exceedingly angry with Jonathan, and said to him, Thou son of traitorous damsels! for do I not know that thou art an accomplice with the son of Jessae to thy same, and to the shame of thy mother's nakedness?

¶Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse rebellious woman, don’t I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?

For so long as the son of Jessae lives upon the earth, thy kingdom shall not be established: now then send and take the young man, for he shall surely die.

And Jonathan answered Saul, Why is he to die? What has he done?

¶Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”
331Sm 20:3333καὶ ἐπῆρεν Σαουλ τὸ δόρυ ἐπὶ Ιωναθαν τοῦ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν καὶ ἔγνω Ιωναθαν ὅτι συντετέλεσται ἡ κακία αὕτη παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ θανατῶσαι τὸν Δαυιδ1Kgs 20:33
And Saul lifted up his spear against Jonathan to slay him: so Jonathan knew that this evil was determined on by his father to slay David.

¶Saul cast his spear at him to strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.

¶Saul cast his spear at him to strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.
341Sm 20:3434καὶ ἀνεπήδησεν Ιωναθαν ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης ἐν ὀργῇ θυμοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγεν ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ τοῦ μηνὸς ἄρτον ὅτι ἐθραύσθη ἐπὶ τὸν Δαυιδ ὅτι συνετέλεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ1Kgs 20:34
And Jonathan sprang up from the table in great anger, and did not eat bread on the second day of the month, for he grieved bitterly for David, because his father determined on mischief against him.

So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
351Sm 20:3535καὶ ἐγενήθη πρωὶ καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ιωναθαν εἰς ἀγρόν καθὼς ἐτάξατο εἰς τὸ μαρτύριον Δαυιδ καὶ παιδάριον μικρὸν μετ’ αὐτοῦ1Kgs 20:35
And morning came, and Jonathan went out to the field, as he appointed to do for a signal to David, and a little boy was with him.

It happened in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him.

It happened in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him.

And he said to the boy, Run, find me the arrows which I shoot: and the boy ran, and Jonathan shot an arrow, and sent it beyond him.

And the boy came to the place where the arrow was which Jonathan shot; and Jonathan cried out after the lad, and said, The arrow is on that side of thee and beyond thee.

When the boy was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”

When the boy was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”

And Jonathan cried out after his boy, saying, Make all speed, and stay not. And Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows, and brought the arrows to his master.

Jonathan cried after the boy, “Go fast! Hurry! Don’t delay!” Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

And the boy knew nothing, only Jonathan and David knew.

And when the lad went in, then David arose from the argab, and fell upon his face, and did obeisance to him three times, and they kissed each other, and wept for each other, for a great while.

¶As soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of a place toward the South, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another, and wept one with another, and David wept the most.

And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, and as we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord shall be witness between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever—even so let it be. And David arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
1Sm 20:42Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the name of Yahweh, saying, ‘Yahweh shall be between me and you, and between my seed and your seed, forever.’” He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.
