¶These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2Prv 25:22כְּבֹ֣ד אֱ֭לֹהִים הַסְתֵּ֣ר דָּבָ֑ר וּכְבֹ֥ד מְ֝לָכִ֗ים חֲקֹ֣ר דָּבָֽר׃Prv 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing,
but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
Prv 25:2Prv 25:2δόξα θεοῦ κρύπτει λόγον δόξα δὲ βασιλέως τιμᾷ πράγματαPrv 25:2
The glory of God conceals a matter: but the glory of a king honours business.
Prv 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing,
but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3Prv 25:33שָׁמַ֣יִם לָ֭רוּם וָאָ֣רֶץ לָעֹ֑מֶק וְלֵ֥ב מְ֝לָכִ֗ים אֵ֣ין חֵֽקֶר׃Prv 25:3
As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.
Prv 25:3Prv 25:3οὐρανὸς ὑψηλός γῆ δὲ βαθεῖα καρδία δὲ βασιλέως ἀνεξέλεγκτοςPrv 25:3
Heaven is high, and earth is deep, and a king's heart is unsearchable.
Prv 25:3
As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.
4Prv 25:44הָג֣וֹ סִיגִ֣ים מִכָּ֑סֶף וַיֵּצֵ֖א לַצֹּרֵ֣ף כֶּֽלִי׃Prv 25:4
Take away the dross from the silver,
and material comes out for the refiner;
Prv 25:4Prv 25:4τύπτε ἀδόκιμον ἀργύριον καὶ καθαρισθήσεται καθαρὸν ἅπανPrv 25:4
Beat the drossy silver, and it shall be made entirely pure.
Prv 25:4
Take away the dross from the silver,

5Prv 25:55הָג֣וֹ רָ֭שָׁע לִפְנֵי־מֶ֑לֶךְ וְיִכּ֖וֹן בַּצֶּ֣דֶק כִּסְאֽוֹ׃Prv 25:5
Take away the wicked from the king’s presence,
and his throne will be established in righteousness.

Slay the ungodly from before the king, and his throne shall prosper in righteousness.

6Prv 25:66אַל־תִּתְהַדַּ֥ר לִפְנֵי־מֶ֑לֶךְ וּבִמְק֥וֹם גְּ֝דֹלִ֗ים אַֽל־תַּעֲמֹֽד׃Prv 25:6
Don’t exalt yourself in the presence of the king,
or claim a place among great men;

Be not boastful in the presence of the king, and remain not in the places of princes;

for it is better that it be said to you, “Come up here,”
than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince,
whom your eyes have seen.
Prv 25:7Prv 25:7κρεῖσσον γάρ σοι τὸ ῥηθῆναι ἀνάβαινε πρός με ἢ ταπεινῶσαί σε ἐν προσώπῳ δυνάστου ἃ εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου λέγεPrv 25:7
for it is better for thee that it should be said, Come up to me, than that one should humble thee in the presence of the prince; speak of that which thine eyes have seen.

for it is better that it be said to you, “Come up here,”
than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince,
whom your eyes have seen.
8Prv 25:88אַל־תֵּצֵ֥א לָרִ֗ב מַ֫הֵ֥ר פֶּ֣ן מַה־תַּ֭עֲשֶׂה בְּאַחֲרִיתָ֑הּ בְּהַכְלִ֖ים אֹתְךָ֣ רֵעֶֽךָ׃Prv 25:8
Don’t be hasty in bringing charges to court.
What will you do in the end when your neighbor shames you?
Prv 25:8Prv 25:8μὴ πρόσπιπτε εἰς μάχην ταχέως ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθῇς ἐπ’ ἐσχάτων ἡνίκα ἄν σε ὀνειδίσῃ ὁ σὸς φίλοςPrv 25:8
Get not suddenly into a quarrel, lest thou repent at last.
Prv 25:8
Don’t be hasty in bringing charges to court.
What will you do in the end when your neighbor shames you?
9Prv 25:99רִֽ֭יבְךָ רִ֣יב אֶת־רֵעֶ֑ךָ וְס֖וֹד אַחֵ֣ר אַל־תְּגָֽל׃Prv 25:9
Debate your case with your neighbor,
and don’t betray the confidence of another;

lest thy friend continue to reproach thee, so thy quarrel and enmity shall not depart, but shall be to thee like death. Favour and friendship set a man free, which do thou keep for thyself, lest thou be made liable to reproach; but take heed to thy ways peaceably.

As a golden apple in a necklace of sardius, so is it to speak a wise word.

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,
so is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.
Prv 25:12Prv 25:12εἰς ἐνώτιον χρυσοῦν σάρδιον πολυτελὲς δέδεται λόγος σοφὸς εἰς εὐήκοον οὖςPrv 25:12
In an ear-ring of gold a precious sardius is also set; so is a wise word to an obedient ear.

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest,
so is a faithful messenger to those who send him;
for he refreshes the soul of his masters.

As a fall of snow in the time of harvest is good against heat, so a faithful messenger refreshes those that send him; for he helps the souls of his employers.

14Prv 25:1414נְשִׂיאִ֣ים וְ֭רוּחַ וְגֶ֣שֶׁם אָ֑יִן אִ֥ישׁ מִ֝תְהַלֵּ֗ל בְּמַתַּת־שָֽׁקֶר׃Prv 25:14
As clouds and wind without rain,
so is he who boasts of gifts deceptively.
Prv 25:14Prv 25:14ὥσπερ ἄνεμοι καὶ νέφη καὶ ὑετοὶ ἐπιφανέστατοι οὕτως οἱ καυχώμενοι ἐπὶ δόσει ψευδεῖPrv 25:14
As winds and clouds and rains are most evident objects, so is he that boasts of a false gift.
Prv 25:14
As clouds and wind without rain,
so is he who boasts of gifts deceptively.
15Prv 25:1515בְּאֹ֣רֶךְ אַ֭פַּיִם יְפֻתֶּ֣ה קָצִ֑ין וְלָשׁ֥וֹן רַ֝כָּ֗ה תִּשְׁבָּר־גָּֽרֶם׃Prv 25:15
By patience a ruler is persuaded.
A soft tongue breaks the bone.
Prv 25:15Prv 25:15ἐν μακροθυμίᾳ εὐοδία βασιλεῦσιν γλῶσσα δὲ μαλακὴ συντρίβει ὀστᾶPrv 25:15
In long-suffering is prosperity to kings, and a soft tongue breaks the bones.
Prv 25:15
By patience a ruler is persuaded.
A soft tongue breaks the bone.
16Prv 25:1616דְּבַ֣שׁ מָ֭צָאתָ אֱכֹ֣ל דַּיֶּ֑ךָּ פֶּן־תִּ֝שְׂבָּעֶ֗נּוּ וַהֲקֵֽאתֽוֹ׃Prv 25:16
Have you found honey?
Eat as much as is sufficient for you,
lest you eat too much, and vomit it.
Prv 25:16Prv 25:16μέλι εὑρὼν φάγε τὸ ἱκανόν μήποτε πλησθεὶς ἐξεμέσῃςPrv 25:16
Having found honey, eat only what is enough, lest haply thou be filled, and vomit it up.
Prv 25:16
Have you found honey?
Eat as much as is sufficient for you,
lest you eat too much, and vomit it.
17Prv 25:1717הֹקַ֣ר רַ֭גְלְךָ מִבֵּ֣ית רֵעֶ֑ךָ פֶּן־יִ֝שְׂבָּעֲךָ֗ וּשְׂנֵאֶֽךָ׃Prv 25:17
Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,
lest he be weary of you, and hate you.
Prv 25:17Prv 25:17σπάνιον εἴσαγε σὸν πόδα πρὸς τὸν σεαυτοῦ φίλον μήποτε πλησθείς σου μισήσῃ σεPrv 25:17
Enter sparingly into thy friend's house, lest he be satiated with thy company, and hate thee.

Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,
lest he be weary of you, and hate you.
18Prv 25:1818מֵפִ֣יץ וְ֭חֶרֶב וְחֵ֣ץ שָׁנ֑וּן אִ֥ישׁ עֹנֶ֥ה בְ֝רֵעֵ֗הוּ עֵ֣ד שָֽׁקֶר׃Prv 25:18
A man who gives false testimony against his neighbor
is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.
Prv 25:18Prv 25:18ῥόπαλον καὶ μάχαιρα καὶ τόξευμα ἀκιδωτόν οὕτως καὶ ἀνὴρ ὁ καταμαρτυρῶν τοῦ φίλου αὐτοῦ μαρτυρίαν ψευδῆPrv 25:18
As a club, and a dagger, and a pointed arrow, so also is a man who bears false witness against his friend.

is like a bad tooth, or a lame foot.

The way of the wicked and the foot of the transgressor shall perish in an evil day.

20Prv 25:2020מַ֥עֲדֶה בֶּ֨גֶד ׀ בְּי֣וֹם קָ֭רָה חֹ֣מֶץ עַל־נָ֑תֶר וְשָׁ֥ר בַּ֝שִּׁרִ֗ים עַ֣ל לֶב־רָֽע׃ פ Prv 25:20
As one who takes away a garment in cold weather,
or vinegar on soda,
so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
Prv 25:20Prv 25:20ὥσπερ ὄξος ἕλκει ἀσύμφορον οὕτως προσπεσὸν πάθος ἐν σώματι καρδίαν λυπεῖPrv 25:20
As vinegar is bad for a sore, so trouble befalling the body afflicts the heart. As a moth in a garment, and a worm in wood, so the grief of a man hurts the heart.

As one who takes away a garment in cold weather,

21Prv 25:2121אִם־רָעֵ֣ב שֹׂ֭נַאֲךָ הַאֲכִלֵ֣הוּ לָ֑חֶם וְאִם־צָ֝מֵ֗א הַשְׁקֵ֥הוּ מָֽיִם׃Prv 25:21
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat.
If he is thirsty, give him water to drink:

If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink;

22Prv 25:2222כִּ֤י גֶֽחָלִ֗ים אַ֭תָּה חֹתֶ֣ה עַל־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַֽ֝יהוָ֗ה יְשַׁלֶּם־לָֽךְ׃Prv 25:22
for you will heap coals of fire on his head,
and Yahweh will reward you.

for so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee with good.

23Prv 25:2323ר֣וּחַ צָ֭פוֹן תְּח֣וֹלֵֽל גָּ֑שֶׁם וּפָנִ֥ים נִ֝זְעָמִ֗ים לְשׁ֣וֹן סָֽתֶר׃Prv 25:23
The north wind brings forth rain:
so a backbiting tongue brings an angry face.
Prv 25:23Prv 25:23ἄνεμος βορέας ἐξεγείρει νέφη πρόσωπον δὲ ἀναιδὲς γλῶσσαν ἐρεθίζειPrv 25:23
The north wind raises clouds; so an impudent face provokes the tongue.

Prv 25:24
It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,
than to share a house with a contentious woman.
Prv 25:24Prv 25:24κρεῖττον οἰκεῖν ἐπὶ γωνίας δώματος ἢ μετὰ γυναικὸς λοιδόρου ἐν οἰκίᾳ κοινῇPrv 25:24
It is better to dwell on a corner of the roof, than with a railing woman in an open house.
Prv 25:24
It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,
than to share a house with a contentious woman.
25Prv 25:2525מַ֣יִם קָ֭רִים עַל־נֶ֣פֶשׁ עֲיֵפָ֑ה וּשְׁמוּעָ֥ה ט֝וֹבָ֗ה מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מֶרְחָֽק׃Prv 25:25
Like cold water to a thirsty soul,
so is good news from a far country.
Prv 25:25Prv 25:25ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ψυχρὸν ψυχῇ διψώσῃ προσηνές οὕτως ἀγγελία ἀγαθὴ ἐκ γῆς μακρόθενPrv 25:25
As cold water is agreeable to a thirsting soul, so is a good message from a land far off.
Prv 25:25
Like cold water to a thirsty soul,
so is good news from a far country.
26Prv 25:2626מַעְיָ֣ן נִ֭רְפָּשׂ וּמָק֣וֹר מָשְׁחָ֑ת צַ֝דִּ֗יק מָ֣ט לִפְנֵֽי־רָשָֽׁע׃Prv 25:26
Like a muddied spring, and a polluted well,
so is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
Prv 25:26Prv 25:26ὥσπερ εἴ τις πηγὴν φράσσοι καὶ ὕδατος ἔξοδον λυμαίνοιτο οὕτως ἄκοσμον δίκαιον πεπτωκέναι ἐνώπιον ἀσεβοῦςPrv 25:26
As if one should stop a well, and corrupt a spring of water, so is it unseemly for a righteous man to fall before an ungodly man.
Prv 25:26
Like a muddied spring, and a polluted well,
so is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
27Prv 25:2727אָ֘כֹ֤ל דְּבַ֣שׁ הַרְבּ֣וֹת לֹא־ט֑וֹב וְחֵ֖קֶר כְּבֹדָ֣ם כָּבֽוֹד׃Prv 25:27
It is not good to eat much honey;
nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor.

It is not good to eat much honey; but it is right to honour venerable sayings.

nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor.but there is need to honor glorious words.
