to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young man:

that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning;
that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:

7Prv 1:77יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה רֵאשִׁ֣ית דָּ֑עַת חָכְמָ֥ה וּ֝מוּסָ֗ר אֱוִילִ֥ים בָּֽזוּ׃ פ Prv 1:7
The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge;
but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and there is good understanding to all that practise it: and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nought wisdom and instruction.

11Prv 1:1111אִם־יֹאמְרוּ֮ לְכָ֪ה אִ֫תָּ֥נוּ נֶאֶרְבָ֥ה לְדָ֑ם נִצְפְּנָ֖ה לְנָקִ֣י חִנָּֽם׃Prv 1:11
If they say, “Come with us,
Let’s lay in wait for blood;
let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

12Prv 1:1212נִ֭בְלָעֵם כִּשְׁא֣וֹל חַיִּ֑ים וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים כְּי֣וֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר׃Prv 1:12
let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol,
and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

13Prv 1:1313כָּל־ה֣וֹן יָקָ֣ר נִמְצָ֑א נְמַלֵּ֖א בָתֵּ֣ינוּ שָׁלָֽל׃Prv 1:13
We’ll find all valuable wealth.
We’ll fill our houses with spoil.
Prv 1:13Prv 1:13τὴν κτῆσιν αὐτοῦ τὴν πολυτελῆ καταλαβώμεθα πλήσωμεν δὲ οἴκους ἡμετέρους σκύλωνPrv 1:13
let us seize on his valuable property, and let us fill our houses with spoils:

We’ll find all valuable wealth.
We’ll fill our houses with spoil.
14Prv 1:1414גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְךָ תַּפִּ֣יל בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ כִּ֥יס אֶ֝חָ֗ד יִהְיֶ֥ה לְכֻלָּֽנוּ׃Prv 1:14
You shall cast your lot among us.
We’ll all have one purse.”

15Prv 1:1515בְּנִ֗י אַל־תֵּלֵ֣ךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אִתָּ֑ם מְנַ֥ע רַ֝גְלְךָ֗ מִנְּתִיבָתָֽם׃Prv 1:15
My son, don’t walk in the way with them.
Keep your foot from their path,
Prv 1:15Prv 1:15μὴ πορευθῇς ἐν ὁδῷ μετ’ αὐτῶν ἔκκλινον δὲ τὸν πόδα σου ἐκ τῶν τρίβων αὐτῶνPrv 1:15
go not in the way with them, but turn aside thy foot from their paths:

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird:

but these lay wait for their own blood.
They lurk secretly for their own lives.

For they that are concerned in murder store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of transgressors is evil.

19Prv 1:1919כֵּ֗ן אָ֭רְחוֹת כָּל־בֹּ֣צֵֽעַ בָּ֑צַע אֶת־נֶ֖פֶשׁ בְּעָלָ֣יו יִקָּֽח׃ פ Prv 1:19
So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain.
It takes away the life of its owners.
Prv 1:19Prv 1:19αὗται αἱ ὁδοί εἰσιν πάντων τῶν συντελούντων τὰ ἄνομα τῇ γὰρ ἀσεβείᾳ τὴν ἑαυτῶν ψυχὴν ἀφαιροῦνταιPrv 1:19
These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life.

20Prv 1:2020חָ֭כְמוֹת בַּח֣וּץ תָּרֹ֑נָּה בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת תִּתֵּ֥ן קוֹלָֽהּ׃Prv 1:20
Wisdom calls aloud in the street.
She utters her voice in the public squares.
Prv 1:20Prv 1:20σοφία ἐν ἐξόδοις ὑμνεῖται ἐν δὲ πλατείαις παρρησίαν ἄγειPrv 1:20
Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly.

She utters her voice in the public squares.
21Prv 1:2121בְּרֹ֥אשׁ הֹמִיּ֗וֹת תִּ֫קְרָ֥א בְּפִתְחֵ֖י שְׁעָרִ֥ים בָּעִ֗יר אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ תֹאמֵֽר׃Prv 1:21
She calls at the head of noisy places.
At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:
Prv 1:21Prv 1:21ἐπ’ ἄκρων δὲ τειχέων κηρύσσεται ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις δυναστῶν παρεδρεύει ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις πόλεως θαρροῦσα λέγειPrv 1:21
And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says,
Prv 1:21

22Prv 1:2222עַד־מָתַ֣י ׀ פְּתָיִם֮ תְּֽאֵהֲב֫וּ פֶ֥תִי וְלֵצִ֗ים לָ֭צוֹן חָמְד֣וּ לָהֶ֑ם וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים יִשְׂנְאוּ־דָֽעַת׃Prv 1:22
“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery,
and fools hate knowledge?
Prv 1:22Prv 1:22ὅσον ἂν χρόνον ἄκακοι ἔχωνται τῆς δικαιοσύνης οὐκ αἰσχυνθήσονται οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες τῆς ὕβρεως ὄντες ἐπιθυμηταί ἀσεβεῖς γενόμενοι ἐμίσησαν αἴσθησινPrv 1:22
So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs.

“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery,
and fools hate knowledge?For as long as the innocent should be having a hold of righteousness, they will not be put to shame, but the unthinking, while lusting of hubris, upon becoming ungodly, hated discretion.

Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you.
I will make known my words to you.

Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.

Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you.

24Prv 1:2424יַ֣עַן קָ֭רָאתִי וַתְּמָאֵ֑נוּ נָטִ֥יתִי יָ֝דִ֗י וְאֵ֣ין מַקְשִֽׁיב׃Prv 1:24
Because I have called, and you have refused;
I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;
Prv 1:24Prv 1:24ἐπειδὴ ἐκάλουν καὶ οὐχ ὑπηκούσατε καὶ ἐξέτεινον λόγους καὶ οὐ προσείχετεPrv 1:24
Since I called, and ye did not hearken; and I spoke at length, and ye gave no heed;

but ye set at nought my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs;

26Prv 1:2626גַּם־אֲ֭נִי בְּאֵידְכֶ֣ם אֶשְׂחָ֑ק אֶ֝לְעַ֗ג בְּבֹ֣א פַחְדְּכֶֽם׃Prv 1:26
I also will laugh at your disaster.
I will mock when calamity overtakes you;
Prv 1:26Prv 1:26τοιγαροῦν κἀγὼ τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ ἀπωλείᾳ ἐπιγελάσομαι καταχαροῦμαι δέ ἡνίκα ἂν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθροςPrv 1:26
therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against you when ruin comes upon you:

when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind;
when distress and anguish come on you.

yea when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and your overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you.

when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind;
when distress and anguish come on you.
28Prv 1:2828אָ֣ז יִ֭קְרָאֻנְנִי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗נְנִי וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃Prv 1:28
Then will they call on me, but I will not answer.
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;
Prv 1:28Prv 1:28ἔσται γὰρ ὅταν ἐπικαλέσησθέ με ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ εἰσακούσομαι ὑμῶν ζητήσουσίν με κακοὶ καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσουσινPrv 1:28
For it shall be that when ye call upon me, I will not hearken to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find me.

Then will they call on me, but I will not answer.
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;
29Prv 1:2929תַּ֭חַת כִּי־שָׂ֣נְאוּ דָ֑עַת וְיִרְאַ֥ת יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה לֹ֣א בָחָֽרוּ׃Prv 1:29
because they hated knowledge,
and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.
Prv 1:29Prv 1:29ἐμίσησαν γὰρ σοφίαν τὸν δὲ φόβον τοῦ κυρίου οὐ προείλαντοPrv 1:29
For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord:
Prv 1:29
because they hated knowledge,
and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.
30Prv 1:3030לֹא־אָב֥וּ לַעֲצָתִ֑י נָ֝אֲצ֗וּ כָּל־תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃Prv 1:30
They wanted none of my counsel.
They despised all my reproof.
Prv 1:30Prv 1:30οὐδὲ ἤθελον ἐμαῖς προσέχειν βουλαῖς ἐμυκτήριζον δὲ ἐμοὺς ἐλέγχουςPrv 1:30
neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs.

31Prv 1:3131וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ מִפְּרִ֣י דַרְכָּ֑ם וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃Prv 1:31
Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way,
and be filled with their own schemes.

Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness.

32Prv 1:3232כִּ֤י מְשׁוּבַ֣ת פְּתָיִ֣ם תַּֽהַרְגֵ֑ם וְשַׁלְוַ֖ת כְּסִילִ֣ים תְּאַבְּדֵֽם׃Prv 1:32
For the backsliding of the simple will kill them.
The careless ease of fools will destroy them.
Prv 1:32Prv 1:32ἀνθ’ ὧν γὰρ ἠδίκουν νηπίους φονευθήσονται καὶ ἐξετασμὸς ἀσεβεῖς ὀλεῖPrv 1:32
For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly.

But whoever listens to me will dwell securely,
and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
Prv 1:33Prv 1:33ὁ δὲ ἐμοῦ ἀκούων κατασκηνώσει ἐπ’ ἐλπίδι καὶ ἡσυχάσει ἀφόβως ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦPrv 1:33
But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil.
Prv 1:33
But whoever listens to me will dwell securely,
