Purpose of the Parables (Seeing They Do Not See, Hearing They Do Not Hear)

Mk4:10¶When he was alone, those who were around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.Mt13:10¶The disciples came, and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”Lk8:9¶Then his disciples asked him, “What does this parable mean?”

Mt13:14In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says,
‘By hearing you will hear,

Seeing you will see,

Mt13:15
for this people’s heart has grown callous,
their ears are dull of hearing,
they have closed their eyes;
or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their heart,
and should turn again;
and I would heal them.’*

Explanation of the Parable of the Sower

Mk4:13Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην; Καὶ πῶς πάσας τὰς παραβολὰς γνώσεσθε;Mk4:13¶He said to them, Don’t you understand Is this parable not obvious[a] to you? How will you understand all of the parables?
———
a Gr. οἶδα, which like γινώσκω in the next sentence means to know, often connotates previous awareness of or familiarity with, but here that meaning doesn't fit because it doesn't follow that lack of prior knowledge should bear on one's ability to understand other parables.
