Wake up! / Get up, O Jerusalem! / You drank from the cup the Lord passed to you, / which was full of his anger! / You drained dry / the goblet full of intoxicating wine (NET) and Jer. 25:15-16: 25:15 So the Lord, the God of Israel, spoke to me in a vision. Take this cup from my hand. It is filled with the wine of my wrath. Take it and make the nations to whom I send you drink it. 25:16 When they have drunk it, they will stagger to and fro and act insane. For I will send wars sweeping through them (NET).
b Gr. ἀκράτος, unmixed (lit. un-cratered), fr. κρατήρ, a mixing bowl (for mixing wine with water; see also Rv 18:6n). Akratos (Acratus) is also another name for Ἀκρατοπότης, the drinker of unmixed wine, a companion of Dionysus. Dionysus (Rom. Bacchus) himself also had the epithet Ἀκρατοφόρος, the giver of unmixed wine.
c Cf. Ps. 74(75):8 LXX: For there is a cup in the hand of the Lord, full of unmingled wine [οἴνου ἀκράτου πλῆρες κεράσματος]; and he has turned it from side to side, but its dregs have not been wholly poured out; all the sinners of the earth shall drink them (Brenton).
d Cf. Ps. 10(11):6: He shall rain upon sinners snares, fire, and brimstone [ἐπιβρέξει ἐπὶ ἁμαρτωλοὺς παγίδας πῦρ καὶ θεῖον], and a stormy blast shall be the portion of their cup (Brenton) and Gn. 19:24: Then the Lord rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. It was sent down from the sky by the Lord (NET).
