^a Gr. καὶ is translated here as just to preserve the word order, but what is actually said is: He will certainly (γε) rise and give out of duty...if not also (καὶ) because he is a friend....

^b Gr. ἀναίδεια is generally accepted to mean shamelessness, though its intent in this passage is not clear nor is it clear whose shamelessness it is. If taken to mean lacking shame, it presumably suggests audacity on the part of the friend knocking; but here it is being posited instead to mean lacking cause for shame on the part of the friend inside the house who will not dishonor himself by ignoring his friend in need.
