Theophilus

Lk1:1Ἐπειδήπερ πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων ἐν ἡμῖν πραγμάτων,Lk1:1Since Whereas many have undertaken to set put in order a narrative concerning those the matters which have been fulfilled taken place[a] among us,

Θεόφιλος, meaning God-friend, is perhaps not a specific individual's name, but rather a general salutation to a wide audience, e.g., Dear Christian Brother or Sister, or if a specific individual then perhaps a pseudonym or term of endearment, or perhaps even just a literary device created to style a book written for general circulation as a private letter to a fictitious individual.
Lk1:4ἵνα ἐπιγνῷς περὶ ὧν κατηχήθης λόγων τὴν ἀσφάλειαν.Lk1:4that you might know discern the certainty concerning of the things in about which you were instructed informed.

An Angel Speaks to Zacharias in the Temple

Lk1:5¶There was in the days of Herod (the Great), the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Lk1:12Καὶ ἐταράχθη Ζαχαρίας ἰδών, καὶ φόβος ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν.Lk1:12Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
Lk1:13Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ ἄγγελος, Μὴ φοβοῦ, Ζαχαρία· διότι εἰσηκούσθη ἡ δέησίς σου, καὶ ἡ γυνή σου Ἐλισάβετ γεννήσει υἱόν σοι, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννην.Lk1:13But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request plea has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
Lk1:14Καὶ ἔσται χαρά σοι καὶ ἀγαλλίασις, καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τῇ { γεννήσει ♦ γενέσει } αὐτοῦ χαρήσονται.

Lk1:14You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.

Lk1:15For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

Lk1:17καὶ αὐτὸς προελεύσεται ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου, ἐπιστρέψαι καρδίας πατέρων ἐπὶ τέκνα, καὶ ἀπειθεῖς ἐν φρονήσει δικαίων, ἑτοιμάσαι κυρίῳ λαὸν κατεσκευασμένον.Lk1:17He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”

I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you share this good news with you.
Lk1:20Καὶ ἰδού, ἔσῃ σιωπῶν καὶ μὴ δυνάμενος λαλῆσαι, ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας γένηται ταῦτα, ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἐπίστευσας τοῖς λόγοις μου, οἵτινες πληρωθήσονται εἰς τὸν καιρὸν αὐτῶν.Lk1:20Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

Lk1:21¶The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.
Lk1:22Ἐξελθὼν δὲ οὐκ { ἠδύνατο ♦ ἐδύνατο } λαλῆσαι αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν ὅτι ὀπτασίαν ἑώρακεν ἐν τῷ ναῷ· καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διανεύων αὐτοῖς, καὶ διέμενεν κωφός.

Lk1:22When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.

Conception of John the Baptist

Lk1:24¶Μετὰ δὲ ταύτας τὰς ἡμέρας συνέλαβεν Ἐλισάβετ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ περιέκρυβεν ἑαυτὴν μῆνας πέντε, λέγουσαLk1:24After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

Lk1:26¶Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

Lk1:31Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’

Lk1:34Εἶπεν δὲ Μαριὰμ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον, Πῶς ἔσται τοῦτο, ἐπεὶ ἄνδρα οὐ γινώσκω;Lk1:34¶Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”
Lk1:35Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῇ, Πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐπελεύσεται ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ δύναμις ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι· διὸ καὶ τὸ γεννώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται υἱὸς θεοῦ.Lk1:35¶The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also And, yea, the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

An Angel Speaks to Joseph in a Dream

Mt1:18¶Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ ἡ { γέννησις ♦ γένεσις } οὕτως ἦν. Μνηστευθείσης { γὰρ ♦ - } τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Μαρίας τῷ Ἰωσήφ, πρὶν ἢ συνελθεῖν αὐτούς, εὑρέθη ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα ἐκ πνεύματος ἁγίου.

Mt1:18¶Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this;: for after his mother, Mary, was engaged betrothed[a] to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

a Gr. μνηστεύω, distinct from γαμέω (to receive in marriage) and γαμίζω (to give in marriage). On betrothal, the Jewish Encyclopedia says: When the agreement [for marriage] had been entered into, it was definite and binding upon both groom and bride, who were considered as man and wife in all legal and religious aspects, except that of actual cohabitation.... The betrothal is equivalent to an actual [though incomplete] marriage and only to be dissolved by a formal divorce. In Lk 2:5, while still technically betrothed, Joseph is free to take Mary with him to Bethlehem as his wife (she is referred to as his having-been-betrothed-to-him wife).

Mt1:19Joseph, her husband, being a righteous decent man, and not willing wanting to make her a public example, intended determined to put divorce[a] her away secretly discreetly.

a Gr. ἀπολύω is the word used for dismissing a crowd; releasing a prisoner; letting someone go; sending someone on their way; and divorce (Mt 5:31-2, 19:3-9, Mk 10:2-12, and Lk 10:18).

a ενθυμεομαι: sort out your "feelings" (about something), literally "emotions in you". This is not about εννοιαι or διαλογισμοι which have to do with the logical or rational mind, the νους but the θυμιαן or emotions which are controlled by the reins of the emotions φρην.
Mt1:21Τέξεται δὲ υἱόν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν· αὐτὸς γὰρ σώσει τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν.Mt1:21She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his the people from their sins.”

Mt1:22¶Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

Lk1:40καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ζαχαρίου, καὶ ἠσπάσατο τὴν Ἐλισάβετ.Lk1:40and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

Mary Returns Home
